Season 1 is coming to a close. Get ready for some major Mueller bombs.

Are the bombs going to provide some proof to the actual Russian collusion or are we all now on the same page that that narrative was fabricated?

Congressman Trey Gowdy had some tough words for Trump lawyer John Dowd for his comments yesterday about how the Mueller probe should end.

Dowd initially claimed he was speaking for President Trump on this, before scrambling to walk that back, but since then Trump has attacked the Mueller probe twice on Twitter.

“The President’s attorney,” Gowdy told Chris Wallace, “does him a disservice when he says that and when he frames the investigation that way.”

He said Mueller’s jurisdiction is very clear and has elements that have “nothing to do with collusion,” so the idea that he’s only looking at it is absurd.

“If you have an innocent client, Mr. Dowd, act like it!” Gowdy declared.

He also added that he hopes Mueller doesn’t get fired because he’s doing important work.

Such a shame that so any republicans only stand up to trump after they announce their retirement. The simple answer has been that there is a fear of losing so GOP pols are getting out before facing defeat. I'm assuming there's more to it than that. Each one who announces ahead of time that they are quitting will have a great story to tell when they primary trump.

In the meantime trump tweets are getting more and more desperate.

Graham is still standing up to Trump.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Sunday said he believes the Senate Judiciary Committee should hold a hearing on the firing of former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe.

“I think we owe it to the average American to have a hearing in the judiciary committee where Attorney General Sessions comes forward with whatever documentation he has about the firing, and give Mr. McCabe the chance to defend himself,” Graham, a member of the panel, said on CNN’s “State of the Union."

“I believe when it comes to this issue we need as much transparency as possible to make sure it wasn’t politically motivated,” he added.

So now we know why he's been ranting like a scared little bitch.

I'm not sure. People ask...why doesn't Trump act like he's innocent...and I believe the answer is that he considers the very existence of the investigation to be a blow to his ego. So even if Trump has no knowledge of collusion (and I don't have an opinion on this either way), he is going to act badly.

It will be interesting to see how this interview request plays out. If Trump refuses to be interviewed, calls for impeachment are likely to gain steam. And if he fires Mueller, things will hit the fan very quickly.

This speaks to the "give him enough rope to hang himself" theory.

For months, President Trump’s legal advisers implored him to avoid so much as mentioning the name of Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel, in his tweets, and to do nothing to provoke him or suggest his investigation is not proper.
Ignoring that advice over the weekend was the decision of a president who ultimately trusts only his own instincts, and now believes he has settled into the job enough to rely on them rather than the people who advise him.
A dozen people close to Mr. Trump or the White House, including current and former aides and longtime friends, described him as newly emboldened to say what he really feels and to ignore the cautions of those around him.

He's feeling his oats and we're about to get the real trump. I'd say it can only one of two ways: 1) He is president for life or 2) He fucks it all up and resigns in disgrace. I don't believe we'll be seeing an election leading to a peaceful transfer of power.

Fox News senior judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano explained Monday why he believes the firing of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe could be viewed as "obstruction of justice."

McCabe was fired Friday, two days before he was set to officially retire and receive pension benefits. The FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility made the recommendation to Attorney General Jeff Sessions to terminate McCabe, accusing him of a "lack of candor" under oath.

Napolitano said he sees the firing as "reckless" and "vindictive" because McCabe is "more likely than not to be a witness" against Sessions' boss, President Trump.

Trump to Hire Lawyer Who Has Pushed Theory That Justice Dept. Framed the President
By MAGGIE HABERMAN and MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT MARCH 19, 2018

MANCHESTER, N.H. — President Trump has decided to hire the longtime Washington lawyer Joseph E. diGenova, who has pushed the theory on television that Mr. Trump was framed by F.B.I. and Justice Department officials, to bolster his legal team, according to three people told of the decision.

More... (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/19/us/politics/joseph-digenova-trump-lawyer.html)

The hire has not been announced, and Mr. Trump frequently changes his mind and sometimes adjusts his plans based on media coverage. It was not clear whether Mr. Trump planned to hire other lawyers.

Mr. diGenova has endorsed the notion that a secretive group of F.B.I. agents concocted the Russia investigation as a way to keep Mr. Trump from becoming president. “There was a brazen plot to illegally exonerate Hillary Clinton and, if she didn’t win the election, to then frame Donald Trump with a falsely created crime,” he said on Fox News in January. He added, “Make no mistake about it: A group of F.B.I. and D.O.J. people were trying to frame Donald Trump of a falsely created crime.”

Maggie Haberman is at is again. It was just one week ago that Trump had to humiliate her publicly for writing an article saying that he was hiring another lawyer, as you can see in the tweets below from March 11, 2018.

President Trump’s attorneys have provided the special counsel’s office with written descriptions that chronicle key moments under investigation in hopes of curtailing the scope of a presidential interview, according to two people familiar with the situation.

Trump’s legal team recently shared the documents in an effort to limit any session between the president and special counsel Robert S. Mueller III to a few select topics, the people said. The lawyers are worried that Trump, who has a penchant for making erroneous claims, would be vulnerable in an hours-long interview.

Hours before his appointment to President Trump's legal team was made public, Joe DiGenova told a Washington, D.C. radio station that the Trump-appointed FBI director had performed in a "despicable" way and had "become an embarrassment," for not being more forthcoming with the public about fired Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe's conduct at the bureau.

McCabe "deserved what he got," DiGenova told WMAL Radio this morning. "He was the guy who was the head of the brazen plot to exonerate Hillary Clinton so she could become president of the United States."

More... (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/joe-digenova-trump-lawyer-says-fbi-director-christopher-wray-is-an-embarrassment/)

That's confusing. I thought McCabe was fired for lacking candor in discussing a leak that he authorized of bad information about Hillary Clinton. If Chris Wallace and Trey Gowdy are correct, then it had nothing to do with Trump.

WALLACE: I just want to go on one point. And, look, leaking is improper and the lack of candor, some would call it lying to investigators, especially under oath. It’s inexcusable and should be held to account.

But my guess is, most people would think that what Andy McCabe was involved with, leaking, was something against the Trump administration. My guess is most people don't know that in fact what he asked -- he didn't actually leak. He apparently authorized and official to talk to a reporter about was the fact that the FBI wanted to pursue the Clinton Foundation investigation over the objections of the Justice Department.

GOWDY: Yes, that's right. I mean, if you look at his statement, he was really upset that he is being blamed for ending something. And the interesting part of his statement, which I’ve heard a lot of people talk about is that he was really blaming DOJ, the Department of Justice who shut down the investigation.

But you know what, Chris? We don't live in a relativistic world and you don't get to pick and choose which rules to abide by and you don't get to decide when to tell the truth and what not to. I’m going to withhold judgment until Horowitz’s report comes out.

Can you link the guilty pleas, indictments and obstruction of justice that are actually related to the collusion of the Trump Administration and the Russian government?

One of President Trump's top lawyers told The New Yorker that it doesn't matter if members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russia as long as no crimes were committed.

“For something to be a crime, there has to be a statute that you claim is being violated,” Jay Sekulow said in an article published in the December issue of the magazine. “There is not a statute that refers to criminal collusion. There is no crime of collusion.”

More... (http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/362929-trump-lawyer-collusion-is-not-a-crime)

Nobody will be charged with collusion because collusion is not a crime. That's not just an argument that Trump's lawyers are making. Everybody acknowledges that collusion is not illegal. If Trump cooperated with Russians to steal Clinton's emails or if he took or paid bribes relating to stolen information, then that would be a crime. If he lies under oath about colluding with the Russians, that would be a crime. Or if the expanding investigation uncovers prior financial crimes, then that would, by definition, be a crime.

Mueller's mandate, which you can read for yourself if you don't believe me (https://www.justice.gov/opa/press-release/file/967231/download), was to investigate matters about which Comey testified before Congress after he was fired. If Comey had not been fired, there would have been no special counsel. That's why Steve Bannon called Comey's firing the biggest political mistake in modern political history. Nobody with any knowledge and understanding of the history of D.C. scandals would have even considered firing Comey in this situation.

This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump..." Trump Jr. responded the same day, "Love it." Then Trump Jr., Kushner and Manafort -- Trump's son, son-in-law and campaign manager, a group that would not be assembled for something viewed as unimportant -- met with the Russians on June 9, 2016. When asked in July of 2016 about rumors that Russia was trying to help the Trump campaign, Trump Jr. said (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiEGEGcokUc) it was a disgusting lie being spread by the Clinton campaign.

Do you think this is the sort of thing Trump Sr. would ignore? Is he the kind of person who wants to win at all costs, or does he have a code of honor that would prohibit accepting help from a foreign government?

If you do a search for timelines relating to the Russia investigation, you will find a variety of sites with long lists of other contacts, both before and after the Trump Jr meeting, between the Trump campaign and the Russians, all circumstantial evidence of collusion. The only direct evidence of collusion is the Trump Jr. meeting, which, of course, was not illegal if it happened as reported by Trump Jr. Lying about it under oath would be illegal, but lying about it to the public, as he did in July of 2016, was not illegal.

I believe the perceived need for an investigation is being driven by circumstantial evidence, reinforced by the attempt to cover up the meeting between Trump Jr. and the Russians, and given credibility by Trump's personal moral character.

Forget for a minute the absurdity of Trump even being in the White House. He got there. However it happened. So here he is. Top job in the country. In the world some might say. Here is the chance of a lifetime to really make a difference. To really show your best to America and the world. What does Trump do with this opportunity? Fires people, rants on twitter at odd hours, sows discord among everyone, and wants a military parade. Well, also tax cuts, appointed a very conservative young justice to the supreme court, put a dozen judges on the federal appeals court, cut out the individual mandate on Obamacare (killing it), removed hundreds of regulations, giving control over to the Generals to fight ISIS, recognized Jerusalem, got us out of the weak Paris Accord, etc....

But while he was doing that, retards like you concentrated on his twitter account.. which is amazing.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says special counsel Robert Mueller should be allowed to finish his job as he investigates contacts between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russia.

McConnell calls Mueller "an excellent appointment" who will "go wherever the facts lead him." McConnell said Tuesday that Mueller, a former FBI director, "will have great credibility with the American people when he reaches a conclusion of this investigation. So I have a lot of confidence in him."

Just a few days ago, Trump had to correct the failing New York Times for reporting that Trump was thinking about replacing his lawyers. Trump tweeted that he was very happy with his lawyers, specifically including Dowd. Today, Dowd resigned. Putting it together, Trump wanted Dowd to stay but Dowd quit anyway. That's not a good sign.

WASHINGTON — The president’s lead lawyer for the special counsel investigation, John Dowd, resigned on Thursday, according to two people briefed on the matter, days after the president called for an end to the inquiry.

From the NY Times this morning..

~

As President Trump heads into one of the most critical phases of the special counsel’s investigation, his personal legal team has shrunk to essentially just one member, and he is struggling to find any top lawyers willing to represent him.

Working for a president is usually seen as a dream job. But leading white-collar lawyers in Washington and New York have repeatedly spurned overtures to take over the defense of Mr. Trump, a mercurial client who often ignores his advisers’ guidance. In some cases, lawyers’ firms have blocked any talks, fearing a backlash that would hurt business.

A prominent Chicago defense attorney said Monday that he had declined an invitation to lead President Trump’s legal team responding to special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s Russia investigation, underscoring the president’s difficulty in attracting top legal talent to represent him in the probe.

Two more high-power attorneys have had to turn down President Donald Trump. Tom Buchanan and Dan Webb confirmed to The Daily Beast that Trump reached out to them about representing him, and that they couldn’t do it.

“President Trump reached out to Dan Webb and Tom Buchanan to provide legal representation,” they said in a statement. “They were unable to take on the representation due to business conflicts. However they consider the opportunity to represent the President to be the highest honor and they sincerely regret that they cannot do so. They wish the president the best and believe he has excellent representation in Ty Cobb and Jay Sekulow.”

Buchanan is a partner at the firm Winston & Strawn, in its Washington office. Webb is the firm’s co-executive chairman, based in Chicago, according to the firm’s website.

Interesting perspective here:

“What happened between last week, when DiGenova and Toensing were announced as joining the team, and yesterday?” mused Neal Katyal, a former acting solicitor general under President Obama. “The conflict of interest issue was apparent on Tuesday, and yet we were told they were joining the team and that Mark Corallo (the person with the most significant conflict) had waived any concern. Then Dowd resigns Thursday, and yet by Sunday DiGenova and Toensing are gone, leaving the president with only two lawyers.”

That strange development, Katyal posited to me, suggests that Robert Mueller may have intervened. “Diligent prosecutors, when they see a defendant doing something profoundly dangerous to their self-interest (including hiring lawyers who have conflicts), will raise it with the defendant and suggest they rethink it,” he explained. “I think it very possible that that happened here—Mueller is a scrupulous prosecutor and may have told Trump he had concerns about Trump’s own rights.

If it did happen, it would strongly suggest that Mueller is formally thinking of Trump as a target of his investigation . . . A prosecutor would issue such a warning to a target, not to a witness its from WaPo

In a court filing Tuesday night special counsel Robert Mueller alleges Rick Gates, a close associate of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, knew the two were working with a former Russian intelligence officer during the 2016 election.

http://www.newsweek.com/mueller-tells-court-paul-manafort-partner-rick-gates-knew-they-were-dealing-ex-862897

The headline downplays it a bit. Gates knew the Russian associate, Kilimnik, was at least a former spy for the GRU. However, FBI assesses that Kilimnik has ongoing ties to Russian intelligence - he is not a former GRU spy, he is a current GRU spy.

Also worth noting that Gates and Kilimnik were in touch in September and October 2016.

What we know to date about Kilimnik, courtesy of a Politico story from August 2016:

Kilimnik did not hide his military past from his new employer. In fact, when he was asked how he learned to speak such fluent English, he responded “Russian military intelligence,”

"It was like ‘Kostya, the guy from the GRU’ — that’s how we talked about him,” said a political operative who worked in Moscow at the time. “The institute was informed that he was GRU, but it didn’t matter at the time because they weren’t doing anything sensitive.”

"There was no secret that [Kilimnik] had been in the intelligence services back in the Soviet Union. He would talk about it. Others on the campaign — Paul, Phil Griffin, Rick Gates — they were pretty open about his background.”

In summary -

The DNC hack in March 2016 was by the GRU.

In June 2016, posing as "Guccifer 2.0", a GRU officer distributed the hacked material.

"Guccifer", ie the GRU, was also Wikileaks' source, or at least one of them.

In September and October 2016, Rick Gates, who knew Kilimnik was GRU because Kilimnik fucking well said so, was in communication with this GRU operative.

Also in September and October 2016, "Guccifer", who had not publicly leaked documents since the big DNC drop in July and the public backlash to it, dropped further documents via Wikileaks, starting on September 12.

Yup. At least 4 separate avenues of verified collusion now:

1) Manafort and Gates dealing with "ex" (nope) GRU officer Kilimnik.
2) Roger Stone dealing with Guccifer 2.0, exposed now as a GRU officer, or group of officers impersonating a single person, and Wikileaks, through which Guccifer released the hacked information Stone was hacking about.
3) Trump Jr. and Kushner knowingly dealing with agents of the Russian government, and who had information that "[was] obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump."
4) Sessions meeting in secret with Amb. Kislyak, lying about said meetings under oath, and the IC intercepting the details of that meeting through surveillance on Kislyak.

So, the US is attacked by an enemy. They undermined our democratic elections, they were hacking into voter databases, they are hacking into our energy grid/water supplies/etc, they fired on US troops in Syria via hired goons, they showed a video of them dropping nuclear weapons on Florida, and they are attacking our allies. The current President- beneficiary of Russian electoral aid- tries to lift sanctions against them and provides cover by trying to convince the country that Russia wasn't attacking us at all- which is enabling increasingly bold attacks against the country he's sworn to protect.

Out of curiosity- which problems that Trump is uniquely able to solve are worse than the above?

The Guardian Reported (https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/mar/17/cambridge-academic-trawling-facebook-had-links-to-russian-university)

Aleksandr Kogan, the Cambridge University academic who orchestrated the harvesting of Facebook data, had previously unreported ties to a Russian university, including a teaching position and grants for research into the social media network, the Observer has discovered.

But while he was helping turn Facebook profiles into a political tool he was also an associate professor at St Petersburg State University, taking Russian government grants to fund other research into social media. “Stress, health, and psychological wellbeing in social networks: cross-cultural investigation” was the title of one piece of research. Online posts showed Kogan lecturing in Russian. One talk was called: “New methods of communication as an effective political instrument”.

There has been this overarching question for some time now- how did the Russians know enough about American voting patterns and demographics to target the electorate with such precision? Tada.

The thing that really caught my attention in this whole saga though is the fact that Bannon had Cambridge Analytica focus group testing Trump's main slogans in 2014. They also focus group tested exactly one foreign concept (everything else was domestic): American reactions to Vladimir Putin (http://www.newsweek.com/cambridge-analytica-trump-campaign-putin-855974).

“The only foreign thing we tested was Putin,” Wylie said. “It turns out, there’s a lot of Americans who really like this idea of a really strong authoritarian leader, and people were quite defensive in focus groups of Putin’s invasion of Crimea.”

Congratulations Trump supporters- your candidate was the product of a bunch of focus group testing. And Bannon and the Mercers clearly understood that this was a joint-venture with Russia from the very beginning.

I've been thoroughly entertained by the initial meltdowns, the subsequent meltdowns, the media meltdown and the re-meltdowns.

President Trump was a far better outcome than a President Hillary Clinton.

I never want to hear the name 'Clinton' in the context of the go-forward Democratic party again - and I say this as a liberal. Your criticism is spot on. She ran a "don't lose" election and it showed. She was a terrible candidate but she's not going away. Fox is still running Clinton/Lewinsky segments in response to Stormy Daniels. Not to say they're talking about Stormy; because they're not. They're endlessly running Clinton stuff and the Clintons remain a boogeyman for the hard right. Hell Trump himself tweets about her on the regular so she or at least her name, isn't going away anytime soon.

Then there's this from Evan McMullin. It's a straight up Partisan war in D.C. and we're all poorer for it. I don't understand why the GOP would waste so much political capital in defense of Trump at the expense of the FBI.

There is still no reason to believe that the FISA application for Carter Page was improper. Even the DOJ IG acknowledges that its new probe is a response to pressure from Trump's congressional allies, who like him, seek to undermine the Russia investigation through various means.

The argument has never been that Russia meddled.. it's always been that Trump colluded with Russia to win the election. That is looking as much of a fabrication today as it was when Hillary's handlers first created it on 11/8/16.

US News reports (https://www.usnews.com/news/top-news/articles/2018-03-29/us-special-counsel-probing-russia-contacts-at-republican-convention-sources) that Mueller is probing Russia Contacts at the Republican Convention:

Mueller's team has been asking about a convention-related event attended by both Russia's U.S. ambassador and Jeff Sessions, the first U.S. senator to support Trump and now his attorney general, said one source, who requested anonymity due to the ongoing investigation.

Another issue Mueller's team has been asking about is how and why Republican Party platform language hostile to Russia was deleted from a section of the document related to Ukraine, said another source who also requested anonymity.

Investigators have asked detailed questions about conversations that Sessions, then a Trump campaign adviser, had at a convention event attended by then-Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergei Kislyak, said the first source, who was questioned by Mueller about the event.

The same source said Mueller's team also has been asking whether Sessions had private discussions with Kislyak on the sidelines of a campaign speech Trump gave at Washington's Mayflower Hotel in April 2016.

Note- asking questions is not the same thing as targeting an issue. One thing that's interesting is the timing of this piece. It suggests that this probe is nowhere near finished.
