View Full Version : Russia Investigation Heating Up

I know. It's funny- I was VERY against FISA when it was originally passed and still have serious reservations about it. But the Carter Page situation has made me realize that there really are situations where this is necessary.
Republicans are currently attacking our Intelligence agencies to defend a Russian spy and the President who put him on his campaign (and he's not even the only Russian collaborator who was placed on the campaign). They're willing to leave us open to attack by foreign nations- to encourage those attacks- and for what?
It's difficult to overstate how abjectly insane this all is. This was something that was inconceivable up until a year and a half ago. And anyone who doesn't recognize the danger in this is a fool.

watching you become more and more unhinged is making my day
It's like you take all the criticisms we levy at you and recycle them.
Unfortunately, it doesn't hold up.
I'm not surprised you can't think of new things.. given that it would take some effort.
Bankrupt is your middle name.

I honestly don't think I've ever seen someone as pathetic as pk before in my entire life. It's kind of sad. cwolff may be a raging racist bordering on domestic terrorist, but at least he seems to have his personal life together.

I've stopped feeling sorry for pk.. there comes a point when it's not circumstances or bad luck.. it's the person just being a pathetic piece of shit.

I'll attempt to dumb this down for you as far as I can, without resorting to using crayons and pictures.
Whitman was anti-Trump in 2016.
Whitman is anti-Trump in 2018.
It's not something new.
I'll attempt to dumb this down for you as far as I can, without resorting to using crayons and pictures.
The fact that somebody, unlike you, was wise enough to see that Trump was a dumpster fire, and continues to have that opinion, in no way magically erases their criticisms or whether or not they're a conservative.
"ERMIGHERD IT'S A NEVERTRUMPER" is not a magic shield that gives you a "get out of thinking free" card. That's something Trump apologists say to comfort each other, since you can't deal with the dissonance of conservatives calling you out for blindly supporting an orange lunatic manchild.

Ah, yes, the economy that was recovering under a Democratic presidency (after the last crash under a Republican) -- which Trump has had very little to do with -- and who routinely called the economic data "fake news" until he came into office, and suddenly credited himself with it.
And beeteedubs, the stock market is at the same level it was 7 months ago. Why isn't it higher? Oh. Because of the dumpster fire you elected. You'd know that, too -- if you actually followed the stock market, or the impact Trump's retarded trade wars and saber-rattling have caused.
On planet Earth, people who actually care about American interests and policy see the damage Trump's done to our relationships with all our allies and trading partners. Worst of all, for absolutely zero gain -- the damage wasn't even a trade-off in exchange for something better. Simply pandering to totally clueless, willfully ignorant bumpkins like yourself.

I realize you're accustomed to living in fantasy-based conservaland -- which is only loosely based on planet Earth -- but this is a real whopper. By what means are you gauging the economy? The stock market? GDP growth? Unemployment rate?
The DJIA was 7,949.09 when Obama took office. When he left office, it was 19,827. Unemployment during Obama's first year, at the height of the recession, reached 10%, and was down to pre-recession levels of 4.7% when he left office, and more than halved the deficit. Trump's done the opposite, proving yet again that "fiscal responsibility" has absolutely nothing to do with Republicans.
Making shit up, or using your fee-fees as a source doesn't constitute an argument.
So, you don't understand gifs? Or is this just another stupid forum rule you've created in your head?

In so close an election, basically any factor could've thrown it. Sure, nominating someone else could've done the job (I voted for Bernie's nomination), but then again, conspiring with a foreign adversary privately and publicly probably also did the trick. Too bad only one of us cares about it. Guess you'll just have to watch as those convictions keep coming in. :)

Fox News legal analyst Andrew Napolitano said Thursday that special counsel Robert Mueller
knows President Trump's tweets are a "treasure trove" for his probe into whether the president obstructed justice.
“Mueller knows that those tweets are a treasure trove and a window into Trump’s thinking,” Napolitano said on Fox News's "Outnumbered."
Napalitano added that if any of Trump's tweets are interpreted as containing threats or rewards, then it could be viewed as witness tampering.
“Did the president send messages to people of threats, or rewards, via his tweets? People who he knew or expected would be interviewed by Bob Mueller?” Napolitano said. “And if he did, was he engaging in witness tampering?"
Good to know.

Allen Weisselberg, a longtime financial gatekeeper for President Donald Trump, has been subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury in the criminal probe of Mr. Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, according to people familiar with the investigation.

Cohen is reportedly confirming (https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/26/politics/michael-cohen-donald-trump-june-2016-meeting-knowledge/index.html) that Trump both knew about the Trump Tower meeting with Russia (duh) but also approved it (double duh):
Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former personal attorney, claims that then-candidate Trump knew in advance about the June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower in which Russians were expected to offer his campaign dirt on Hillary Clinton, sources with knowledge tell CNN. Cohen is willing to make that assertion to special counsel Robert Mueller, the sources said.
Cohen's claim would contradict repeated denials by Trump, Donald Trump Jr., their lawyers and other administration officials who have said that the President knew nothing about the Trump Tower meeting until he was approached about it by The New York Times in July 2017.
Cohen alleges that he was present, along with several others, when Trump was informed of the Russians' offer by Trump Jr. By Cohen's account, Trump approved going ahead with the meeting with the Russians, according to sources.
It appears this information was leaked by the Trump camp.
So, I assume we've now officially moved from "There was no collusion!" to "Okay so there was, so what?"

Yeah no doubt, I'd be cautious about trusting his word as well. But if his testimony matches up with the testimony of others who are cooperating then it doesn't bode well for team Trump.

Does Cohen have to invent something to swing a plea deal or immunity? I'd say he has enough to get that already, without risking perjury. He'll be a witness so he is evidence of illegality in the collusion we already knew about.

Oh no doubt. He knew about it in advance and as soon as the meeting concluded he was phoned by Trump Jr. Trump knew the Russians hacked the DNC servers and then he goes on and tells Russia to hack Hillary's emails. It's all very damning.

There is some complicated stuff going on here. At the end of last week, the Trump team waived privilege about a tape recording of a conversation between Cohen and Trump about paying off a Playboy model. Then somebody leaked the actual tape, which the Trump team condemned. And then at the end of this week somebody leaked that Cohen was present when Trump was informed in advance of Trump Jr.'s Russia meeting. Cohen's lawyer denies that the leak came from Cohen's side and suggests that Trump's team may have leaked it preemptively. This morning Trump surprised everybody by tweeting that he had no knowledge of the meeting. Is this chess or checkers? Or is there some third, smarter person orchestrating these leaks for purposes that the rest of us are too dumb to understand?

Here is something a lot of people have overlooked..
Cohen says that a number of people were present when Trump was notified in advance of the Trump Tower Russia meeting. Cohen does not say who else was present when Trump was informed or when it happened. But Giuliani says no one will corroborate what Cohen says. Giuliani says that he has spoken to everyone in the room with Cohen and Trump when Trump was told or not told about the meeting, and they all remember that Trump was not told about it. Got it?
Cohen alleges he was in the room with a number of others when Donald Trump Jr. informed then-candidate Trump of the planned meeting with a Russian lawyer promising dirt on Hillary Clinton, CNN and NBC News reported Thursday evening, both citing anonymous sources.
More... (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/07/26/michael-cohen-mueller-approved-trump-tower-meeting/846902002/)
GIULIANI: He didn't know about it. I know that. I've been over this in great detail. I've talked to the corroborating witnesses. This guy is walking into a trap. But --
CUOMO: You've talked to the other people that were in the room?
GIULIANI: Of course I did. Months ago. A month ago. Two months ago.
CUOMO: And you know what they say the president was told and not told by his son?
GIULIANI: I know what they say, yes.
CUOMO: All right, fine. Then I accept your word at that. We'll see what you can do to prove it.
GIULIANI: And I know that he's walking into a situation in which there will be no corroboration.
Gosh almighty, why didn't he tape it? He taped everything else. He's got a hundred tapes. Why didn't he tape that?

The libertarian support for the Bundy's is not so much for the family but rather who ultimately has rights to land. Of course you and I have already gone over this, your argument was that government is a better caretaker of land than private citizens. Then I pointed out that private citizens were using that land to graze cattle and in comparison government has used land to test nuclear weapons. That's when you knew you lost the argument and went silent as usual.

No, I am using your own argument against you. Just because an organization supports one thing over another doesn't make it racist. I mean besides obvious racist remarks/organizations.
Here is the thing, I can get behind a police brutality argument. It is when you try to play the racism card that you lose me. I think the police are fast to escalate situations and use force when not reasonably necessary. I just don't think it is because the person is black/brown/whatever.

TL;DR
The verdict
There is evidence in the official police-recorded figures that black Americans are more likely to commit certain types of crime than people of other races.
While it would be naïve to suggest that there is no racism in the US criminal justice system, victim reports don’t support the idea that this is because of mass discrimination.
Higher poverty rates among various urban black communities might explain the difference in crime rates, although the evidence is mixed.
There are few simple answers and links between crime and race are likely to remain the subject of bitter argument.

Did the US government test multiple nuclear weapons on government land or not?
Or are you just going to pretend that blasting off nukes willy nilly hasn't had a profound impact on our environment but plastic straws are the greatest threat to mankind?
As of 1993, worldwide, 520 atmospheric nuclear explosions (including 8 underwater) have been conducted with a total yield of 545 megaton (Mt): 217 Mt from fission and 328 Mt from fusion, while the estimated number of underground nuclear tests conducted in the period from 1957 to 1992 is 1,352

Being a black man myself I have to partly disagree. I think what’s happening at the core is a class issue which drives the race issue, that is, being terminally poor and politically and consumer base weak opens you up to racism. Coupled with the natural tendency to prefer one’s own race to varying degrees and the fact that poverty creates incentives for people to commit crime in order to survive and you get this toxic combination that leads to cops nonchalantly shooting blacks in the back.
If you want a solution it’s simple. Education. My brothers and sisters need to realize that they themselves are the only ones who can help themselves and not the government. Government will only try to use you while holding you firmly down so they got that voter base locked down. My personal word of advice, if you are living in some area that’s unsafe and you’re too poor to educate yourself much less feed yourself, join the military. It’ll get you out of there and give you opportunities you wouldn’t believe, sky’s the limit especially if you got a decent head on your shoulders.

Something interesting I've found, the number of white people killed by police has already surpassed the number of black people killed by police for all of 2017. You act like police only shoot black people, no, it is income based. More black people live in low income areas where crime is likely to occur. Not to mention how many of those shoots(The overwhelming majority) were 100% justified.

Where's your source suggesting middle class black people are more likely to be killed by police, arrested, get longer sentencing, etc, than poor white people. Also please make sure said study accounts for crimes committed by both groups of people, likelihood of each group of people being armed or pointing a gun at a police officer, and accounts for if their longer sentence is due to this being their first conviction or if they have prior convictions already.

Cavuto pressed the Republican on whether Trump could face consequences for his claims that he didn’t know about the meeting.
“But what if he’s proven to be a liar, congressman?” Cavuto asked.
“If he’s proven to have not told the whole truth about the fact that campaigns look for dirt, and if someone offers it, you listen to them, nobody’s going to be surprised,” Issa said. “There are some things in politics that you just take for granted.”
You don’t think this has any long-term impact?” Cavuto asked. “He wouldn’t be the first politician, or president for that matter, to maybe just misrepresent things?”
“Businessmen listen to almost everyone who might be helpful, and by the way, they make pragmatic decisions about how to make bad stories go away,” Issa replied.

See what I mean? The name "Black Lives Matter" would indeed indicate that ALL black lives matter, but instead they only get worked up when a white person kills a black person, mostly white police officers. And yet a young black man is in much more danger of being shot by another young black man than he ever is of being shot by a police officer. Why aren't they focused on that? Why aren't YOU focused on that? Because again you defend black people when they do something wrong and sweep their crimes under the rug. Indictment: Russians also tried to help Bernie Sanders, Jill Stein presidential campaigns
A 37-page indictment resulting from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation shows that Russian nationals and businesses also worked to boost the campaigns of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Green party nominee Jill Stein in an effort to damage Democrat Hillary Clinton.

President Donald Trump is a mere 1 percentage point away from former commander in chief Richard Nixon when it comes to the number of Americans who want him impeached, according to a new poll released Friday.
…
Forty-two percent of those polled answered that Trump “should be impeached,” compared to 51 percent who answered they “don’t feel that way” and 7 percent who registered no opinion.

I would love to hear your alternative explanation for the following:
1) Trump approves a meeting with the Russian government to get dirt on his opponent
2) The top members of his campaign (and two family members) take the meeting
3) Trump denies ANY involvement with the Russian government, but it turns out his campaign had dozens of contacts with Russian cutouts and Intelligence assets, and that he was actively negotiating a Trump Tower Moscow during the election
4) Trump- having already been told by the Russians and the US Federal Government that Russia is trying to get him elected, spends years trying to convince people that it's not Russia
5) Trump immediately tries to lift Russian sanctions imposed for election meddling after getting into office and continues to stall on new sanctions, only imposing the lightest sanctions required by law (designed to minimally impact Putin)
6) Trump fires the head of the FBI for not ending the investigation into Flynn and Russia (by his own words)
7) Trying attacks NATO and our allies- the first US President to do so but something every Putin-backed candidate in the EU has done
7) Trump hires as his campaign manager a guy whose most recent work was helping Putin install a candidate in Ukraine (who was in constant contact with a Russian spy during the campaign)
8) Trump hires a known Russian spy to be one of his foreign policy experts
9) Trump- who lambasts EVERYONE including our Allies- refuses to criticize Putin even after he showed a video of them dripping a nuclear bomb on Flordia and was caught hacking our power grid, election systems, and over half a million US routers in preparation for a large-scale cyber attack.
10) Russia went all out supporting Trump- with a full-scale disinformation campagin and- potentially tens of millions of dollars in dark money flowing to Trump's businesses and conservative lobbying groups.
Let's hear it. Explain to the class how this ISN'T the story of Russia helping to get a US President elected in return for the easing of Russian sanctions and the weakening of the NATO alliance- Putin's top two foreign policy objectives.

What sanctions has Trump eased? How has Trump weakened NATO? He is actually making it stronger by making the other countries up their defense spending. Hell, we've even began putting US Marines in Poland and upped the number in Sweden. We are threatening war with Iran, who is a huge Russian ally. Not only that, he also chided Germany for the reliance of Russian gas, saying they should buy from us instead. If they did that would crush Russia' economy. How is a Russian puppet? It's like the last time the usual suspects tried to give examples of how Trump was in Putin's pocket. The only thing they could come up with is Trump isn't doing more than Obama did to prevent Russia from hacking American political campaigns. If the best they can come up with is Trump is exactly like Obama then I don't think they are putting forth the narrative they want to.

Here's a trend to watch. Team Trump has been slowly shifting the argument from "no collusion" to "collusion is not a crime." Is it just a legal argument made by Trump's attorneys, or is it a concession on the factual issue of whether or not there was collusion?
Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani went on a media blitz Monday morning, during which he claimed “collusion” was not a crime and branded the president’s former lawyer Michael Cohen a “scumbag.”
Giuliani has been an outspoken defender of the president since joining his team to combat the ongoing special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election campaign and allegations of collusion with the Trump campaign.
The former New York City mayor began the day on the president’s favorite morning show, Fox & Friends, where he suggested Trump could not be guilty because the crime doesn’t even exist.
“I've been sitting here looking at the federal code trying to find collusion as a crime,” he began the interview with encouragement from host Steve Doocy. “Collusion is not a crime.”

Well, I mean, it isn’t. It’s just a buzz word to get everyone riled up.

How can you say this? Just a buzzword? I am appalled at you TG. It's so disappointing to see Americans defend this shit. To make excuses and rationalize in lockstep with the talking points coming out of Rudy, trump and the rest of the right wing propaganda machine.

How can I say it’s just a buzzword? Because it is. Go ahead and cite for me the specific crime of “collusion.” I’m not saying that if any of this shit is true a crime hasn’t possibly been committed. I’m saying the word collusion being thrown around is indeed just a buzzword because if some of this stuff turns out to be true and no crime has been committed people like you have already been brainwashed into screaming “collusion!”

It's not a criminal statute but it's far from a buzzword. We're dealing with Russian attacks on our elections and a president who supported those attacks then used the product of some attacks on the campaign trail. This is nothing to take lightly and it's not partisan.
I hate to post the definition because all too often people here try to slide out of a losing argument by splitting hairs over these things, but here it is. It's important to keep in mind what the word collusion means and take it seriously.

Check out this timeline of denials.
1. November 2016: No communications, period
Hope Hicks: “It never happened. There was no communication between the campaign and any foreign entity during the campaign.”
2. February 2017: There were no communications, “to the best of our knowledge”
Sarah Huckabee Sanders: “This is a non-story because, to the best of our knowledge, no contacts took place.”
3. March 2017: There were communications, but no planned meetings with Russians
One thing, Rudy Giuliani: The Trump campaign *did* use it.
Donald Trump Jr.: “Did I meet with people that were Russian? I'm sure, I'm sure I did. ... But none that were set up. None that I can think of at the moment. And certainly none that I was representing the campaign in any way, shape or form.”
4. July 8, 2017: There was a planned meeting at Trump Tower, but it was “primarily” about adoption and not the campaign
Trump Jr.: “We primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago and was since ended by the Russian government, but it was not a campaign issue at that time and there was no follow-up.”
5. July 9, 2017: The meeting was planned to discuss the campaign, but the information exchanged wasn't “meaningful”
Trump Jr.: “No details or supporting information was provided or even offered. It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information.”
6. December 2017: Collusion isn't even a crime
President Trump: “There is no collusion, and even if there was, it’s not a crime.”
Jay Sekulow: “For something to be a crime, there has to be a statute that you claim is being violated. There is not a statute that refers to criminal collusion. There is no crime of collusion.”
(Technically speaking, the criminal code doesn't use the word “collusion,” but it's generally understood as a broad term that could encompass more specific, codified crimes. And even special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's team has used it in court filings.)
7. May 16, 2018: Even if meaningful information were obtained, it wasn't used
Giuliani: “And even if it comes from a Russian, or a German, or an American, it doesn’t matter. And they never used it, is the main thing. They never used it. They rejected it. If there was collusion with the Russians, they would have used it.”
8. May 19, 2018: There was a *second* planned meeting about foreign help in the election, but nothing came of it either
The New York Times reported Sunday on yet another meeting about getting foreign help with the 2016 election. This one came three months before the election and featured Donald Trump Jr. and an emissary, George Nader, who said the princes who lead Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates wanted to assist Trump.
Alan Futerfas, Trump Jr.'s attorney: "They pitched Mr. Trump Jr. on a social media platform or marketing strategy. He was not interested, and that was the end of it.”
9. July 16, 2018: Trump couldn't collude, because Trump didn't even know Putin
Trump: "There was no collusion. I didn't know the president. There was nobody to collude with."
10. July 30, 2018: Collusion isn't a crime, and Trump wasn't physically at the Trump Tower meeting
With Michael Cohen alleging that Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting in real time -- despite many previous denials -- Giuliani told both CNN and Fox News that Trump wasn't physically at the meeting.
"I'm happy to tell Mueller that Trump wasn't at the Trump Tower meeting," Giuliani told CNN, adding that "Don Jr. says he wasn't there.”
He added on Fox: “He did not participate in any meeting about the Russia transaction. ... And the other people at the meeting that he claims he had without the president about it say he was never there.”
Giuliani also argued that collusion isn't even a crime.
And then there is this gem from Rudy:
"I don't even know if that's a crime — colluding with Russians,” Giuliani said on CNN. “Hacking is the crime. The president didn't hack. He didn't pay for the hacking."
Can the bar get any lower? That's a rhetorical question because of course it can and it will get lower and all the trumplicans will go right along with it.

Yeah, it is almost like they have to constantly keep saying there was no collusion and you fuckers won't believe them.

Yeah, it is almost like they have to constantly keep saying there was no collusion and you fuckers won't believe them.
It's more like the Trump administration's story about Russia and Russians has changed like 5,000 times, and each time they're forced to move the goal posts, you continue to uncritically believe their explanations with no sense of shame or irony.
They've gone from:
1) "Nobody in my campaign met or had anything to do with Russia":
"Russia is a ruse. I have nothing to do with Russia. Haven’t made a phone call to Russia in years. Don’t speak to people from Russia. Not that I wouldn’t. I just have nobody to speak to. I spoke to Putin twice. He called me on the election. And he called me on the inauguration, a few days ago … I have nothing to do with Russia. To the best of my knowledge no person that I deal with does." Source (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/20/us/politics/donald-trump-russia.html).
to
2) Acknowledging that numerous members of Trump's campaign met in secret with Russians (Sessions with Kislyak, Don Jr. with Natalia Veselnitskaya, George Padapaolous with Joseph Mifsud, Carter Page with numerous Russian government officials, etc), but claiming that they didn't involve "collusion,"
to
3) Now (https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2018/07/30/no-collusion-oh-wait-maybe-collusion-but-collusions-not-a-crime/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.4383398015cf) arguing that "collusion isn't a crime."
Combine that with how Trump has endless criticism for everyone... except Putin, whom he lavishes with praise. Trump undermines U.S. interests in every way Russia wants.
Trump, his campaign folks and his kids colluded with Russia. You're retarded and/or have partisan blinders on the size of Saturn if that isn't incredibly obvious to you.

Uh...no. There was collusion. We've known that for some time. How many god damn times do we have to say this? Oh, I get it. You don't actually care about truth or justice. You just want to own the libs.

No there wasn't. If there was Mueller would have found it by now. He hasn't. You saying there was doesn't mean there was.

As for collusion, do you not remember this?
Emin just called and asked me to contact you with something very interesting.
The Crown prosecutor of Russia met with his father Aras this morning and in their meeting offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father.
This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump - helped along by Aras and Emin.
What do you think is the best way to handle this information and would you be able to speak to Emin about it directly?
I can also send this info to your father via Rhona, but it is ultra sensitive so wanted to send to you first.
Best
