The real issue is the same with the Left. When they speak of "compromise" they always mean "Give me some of what I want now in exchange for a false promise that I will give you some of what you want later." It has always been so and the Right needs to stop playing that game because we lose every time, millimeter by millimeter, inch by inch, it erodes our country, our rights and freedom.

Definitely some truth in that statement, especially on gun control and/or constitutionally protected rights. Republicans need to do a better job of where they draw & hold the line vs. where they can find compromise (and by compromise I mean actually get something of value in return).

The left and Democrats have been historically better at getting exactly what they want through “negotiating a compromise” vs Republicans. Also there is frustration in the Republican Party that a lot of the politicians will talk a big game on voter issues when campaigning but easily fold on those items when they get to Washington DC.

(Example: Texas Senator John Cornyn & the Safer Communities Act)

The problem with today's republicans is they still believe things like "taking the high road" will accomplish something.

Democrats abandoned that thought process a long time ago, and republicans still can't wrap their heads around it, and then wonder why they keep taking Ls.

Agreed. Many Republicans still “fight with honor” while most Democrats “play for keeps” in simple terms.

The policies that Democrats have negotiated as of late have had major positive impacts on economic growth and American industry, all the while supporting the resurgence of the middle class. Republicans know this, weighed the risk of opposing responsible governance and so backed off opposition. Meanwhile what have we heard in terms of major legislation from the Right? Tax cuts that benefited only the wealthiest and contributed to major gains in their deficit, that was a letter epic fail.

The resurgence of the middle class? Inflation has far outpaced wages. Middle class people buy homes. Tell me, what does that look like right now? Middle class people buy cars. Have automobiles and/or the cost of ownership become more or less expensive? I don’t see what you are talking about, nor do most Americans when polled about the economy. Middle class people cook their food with gas powered ovens & stoves…

I benefited from the tax cuts and I am not super rich. They were also weighted to give the most cuts (and deficit) up front and taper off over time. Republicans did better with the economy by not meddling with it and over spending like Democrats, but I’ll concede that not enough legislation was passed during Trump’s first term especially in the first 2 years where they had majority in Congress. Democrats under Biden administration has done “better” at volume of legislation passed and executive actions. I see those as harmful.

Wages have once again began to outpace inflation month over month and where those gains have been concentrated has been the lower and middle classes. Homeownership in particular has held steady month after month at about 66% under Biden, having grown 1.5% since he came into office. Inflation doesn't erode the value of assets like a home, unless you're looking at it as a short-term investment. For those who own their home 10-30 years, those once in a lifetime interest rates that Trump's administration shepherded in (alongside inflation) by cutting borrowing rates, won't be going away. The inflation is transitory year over year, whereas the long term asset of a home is unrealized unless and until someone refinances or sells their home. Auto sales.. lawl, the 'supply issue' which a lot of dealerships used to mark up their inventory, particularly used inventory, created the biggest challenge for discretionary income for households. Dealers priced themselves out of the market and the increase in borrowing costs has assured new vehicle purchases will remain stagnant, where BEA reports show used vehicle sales and margins have again begun to perk up.

https://apps.bea.gov/iTable/?reqid=19&step=3&isuri=1&nipa_table_list=2058&categories=underlying

The New Deal implemented taxes commiserate with wealth in the United States and those have been steadily eroded, while the tax burden of the middle class has increased. Reagan was the biggest culprit there, followed by Trump, and to a lesser degree Bush Sr. Look to the concentration of wealth in the United States in the 1% and 0.5% percentile which has grown /significantly/ whereas their effective tax rate has plummeted. The trickle down theory under Reagan failed, and failed spectacularly to bolster anything but the formation of an egregious concentration of wealth, which Trump only exacerbated.

Let's use the Tax Foundation data as an example. Tax year 2013 (left) data versus tax year 2020 (right). The share of AGI in these tax groups representing the bottom 90% of wage earners has only decreased in that seven year period.

How not to have a psychic meltdown when you see new Trump-Biden poll numbers
As infuriating as it is to admit the electorate may choose another Trump term, the only answer may be to hold on to that truth.

In The Wall Street Journal’s latest poll of the 2024 election, President Biden and former president Donald Trump are locked at 46% each. Other recent polls have shown essentially the same thing. While there will be many twists and turns before next November, at this point the race is a toss-up.

If that makes you feel like your country has gone mad, you’re not alone.

This is not a feeling we talk about much. While political reporters obsess over the anger and resentments felt by blue-collar white men in Rust Belt diners, liberals’ emotions are seldom considered worthy of the same kind of exploration.

How is it that half of our fellow citizens can contemplate for an instant giving Trump all that power again?

Even those who feel this way know it’s an irrational way to approach politics. I could offer you a lengthy and sober explanation of why a Trump-Biden election will be so close. I can give you chapter and verse to detail why it is that a former president who faces four separate criminal indictments, who attempted to overturn a lawful election, who oozes corruption and dishonesty, and who has made clear his intention to practically dismantle the American system of democracy as soon as he gets the chance, is nearly an even bet to take back the White House.

I can describe the power of partisanship in a polarized age. I can explain the incentive structure that keeps Republican politicians in line behind Trump. I can tell you why Biden gets no credit for bringing the economy back from the depths of recession. I can explain why, despite the fact that he has literally the best one-term job creation record of any president in history; inflation has fallen to 3%; and he has signed legislation providing some of the most important investments in decades, most Americans think Biden has done a poor job on the economy.

I can tell you all that, calmly and reasonably. I’ve done so so many times, when asked by friends, relatives and interviewers. I’ve written so many articles about the nature of Trump’s appeal that I lost count long ago.

Yet part of me looks at those polls and wants to respond not with calm and reason, but with a blood-curdling scream of rage. Or at least with the kind of frustration bordering on despair that usually prompts those questions in the first place.

How can it possibly be, I keep getting asked, that after everything we’ve been through since 2015, even 5% of Americans, let alone 45%, would consider letting him within a mile of the White House? How is it that half of our fellow citizens can contemplate for an instant giving Trump all that power again?

Conservatives disagree vehemently with Biden’s policy choices, you say? Fine — there are a dozen other Republicans running for president, most of whom are quite right-wing, yet not lunatics. Why not pick one of them?

Some details of the primary race may have been unexpected (Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ swift fall, for instance), but Trump’s glide to the nomination is no surprise at all. Anyone who pays close attention to politics by now has a Ph.D. in Trumpology gained over years of watching and considering the man himself, the carnival roadshow of his devoted cultists, and the more casual supporters who keep him atop his party. We all saw this coming. But when you step back for a moment, the whole picture can seem even worse than it was, like a horror movie when the protagonist wakes from her nightmare only to realize she’s still in her nightmare.

Now sanity itself seems a temporary anomaly.

My informal canvas of liberal friends reveals that this feeling — something like incredulous despair verging on panic — is not unusual. We tamp it down and joke about it, but it never disappears. Tens of millions of Americans are fine with Trump’s brand of revanchist authoritarianism, and even yearn for it. Tens of millions more see him as just one choice among many; maybe they’ll vote for him again if the price of gas goes up.

Like many on the left, I will never again be seduced by the inspiring feeling of hope and belonging we felt when Barack Obama was elected in 2008. But the emotions of 2020 were supposed to be less naïve. When Biden won, it felt like a return to sanity. Yes, this abominable person temporarily took hold of our political world, but in the end the electorate did the right thing and sent him packing.

But now sanity itself seems a temporary anomaly. Trump came back, not in some friendlier packaging like the “New Nixon” of 1968, but even worse than before. He quickly regained whatever support he lost in the wake of Jan. 6, as though it never happened.

To be clear, just as I could explain why Trump is in a relatively strong position, I could also offer many good reasons why Biden has the advantage in the general election, and why the most likely outcome may be a repeat of 2020, which he won rather handily. At this time 12 years ago, Barack Obama trailed slightly in the polls, and he won comfortably the following year. The odds are still ever so slightly in Biden’s favor.

But even if that is the outcome, and even if we spend another year between now and the election carefully analyzing the structure and shape of the madhouse we’re locked in, it’s still a madhouse.

As infuriating as it is to admit the electorate may choose another Trump term, the only answer may be to hold on to that truth. Rejecting reality only replicates Republicans’ errors that led to Trump’s rise. Exercise your reason, stay informed, understand what’s happening in all its detail. But at those times when you want to scream in fear and anger, don’t think you’re being foolish or irrational. It just means you can see what’s in front of you.

I will not seek to run again for Speaker of the House. I may have lost a vote today, but I fought for what I believe in—and I believe in America. It has been an honor to serve.

McCarthy is officially throwing in the towel, which one had to wonder how many of those ultra conservative compromises he threw in would not have ever seen the light of day had he a larger majority and the courage of his convictions to stick with no as an answer. Matt Gaetz lambasted McCarthy in the debate today, pointing out that Washington elite's in his party cater to special interests and his former boss catered to this by eating until the last moment to table budgets because it plays into giving special interests what they want when lawmakers have no time to review. I think he was dead on the nose on that point.

Ok, I’ve picked up on a pattern and legitimate question for you Seran.

Do you start drinking and/or consuming recreational drugs beginning in the afternoon?

The reason for me asking that is your grammar & communication seem to degrade as the the day goes on.

I know you think I’m your “enemy” and asking that out of malice, but I’m not. No judgments. Alcoholism runs on both sides of my family and I consider myself fortunate not to suffer from that disease. I don’t answer calls from my sister after 5PM my time because that’s around when she has started her drinking, and she is a wonderful loving functional member of society otherwise.

Will be great to see this pass and Rep Santos tossed out of the House of Representatives for being an indicted crook.

Republican lawmakers to introduce resolution to expel Rep. George Santos from Congress

A group of House Republicans from New York are introducing a resolution to expel Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., from Congress.

"Today, I’ll be introducing an expulsion resolution to rid the People’s House of fraudster George Santos," Rep. Anthony D'Esposito, R-N.Y., said in a post on the social media platform X.

He told reporters he considers Santos "a stain" on the House and on New York state. "It's time that we move on from George Santos," D'Esposito said.

He said the resolution will be co-sponsored by fellow New York House Republicans Nick LaLota, Mike Lawler, Marc Molinaro, Nick Langworthy and Brandon Williams.

Rep. George Santos faces 10 additional charges
LaLota said he considers Santos an "immoral" and "untrustworthy" person. "The sooner he's gone, the better," he said.

Booting Santos would require a two-thirds vote of the entire House, a benchmark LaLota seemed confident of meeting. "I predict this resolution is going to catch fire. Many people feel how we do," he said.

The move comes a day after federal prosecutors issued Santos a 23-count superseding indictment alleging he committed identity theft, fraud and other offenses. Santos, who was first indicted in May, has said he plans on fighting the charges. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in the original 13-count indictment earlier this year.

“If they want to be judge, jury and arbitrator of the whole God damn thing let them do it,” Santos said, responding to the resolution as he ran to his office from a Republican conference meeting. “They just want to silence the people of the 3rd congressional district,” he said later.

Santos's New York GOP colleagues had previously called for him to step down in light of the criminal charges and revelations that he'd fabricated large parts of his resume.

"I said he should resign and he should still resign," Molinaro said in a post on X Tuesday after the additional charges were announced.

House Democrats moved to expel Santos in May after he was initially charged, but Republicans voted to refer their motion to the House Ethics Committee, which has been investigating Santos since March.

D'Esposito suggested he and his colleagues have waited long enough. "I know that Ethics has been a little busy, but, you know, it’s time that we see some results," he said.

Santos first came under scrutiny late last year before he was sworn in when The New York Times published a bombshell investigation indicating that much of his résumé appeared to have been manufactured, including claims that he owned numerous properties, was previously employed by Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and had graduated from Baruch College.

Santos acknowledged "embellishing" parts of his background, but insisted he hadn't done anything criminal and had earned his money legitimately.

The indictment unsealed in May alleged he'd been using campaign donations for personal expenses, including designer clothes, had applied for pandemic unemployment benefits at a time he was making $120,000 a year, and that he lied about his income in House financial documents.

He was hit with 10 additional charges on Tuesday charging he stole people's identities, made charges on his own donors' credit cards without their authorization, and "falsely inflated the campaign’s reported receipts with non-existent loans and contributions that were either fabricated or stolen,” said Breon Peace, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

One of the alleged schemes included falsely claiming that 10 relatives of Santos and his then-campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, had donated big bucks to his campaign to make it appear that he was raising more money than he actually was in order to qualify for assistance from the national party.

"Santos and Marks both knew that these individuals had neither made the reported contributions nor given authorization for their personal information to be included in such false public reports,” prosecutors said.

Marks pleaded guilty to related conspiracy charges last week. Santos, who was released on $500,000 bond after pleading not guilty to the original charges, is due back in court on Oct. 27.

Santos has called the charges against him a “witch hunt” and vowed not to resign.

Oh, was the economy shut down last year due to covid-19? No. Well, then sustained growth two years and a half years since things were shutdown due to covid-19? You're stretching things a bit if you're reaching that far back to discredit the effects of Biden's infrastructure and economy building plans. Polls on average have 5% of Republicans approving of Biden's efforts, think that might have a bit of an impact on approval ratings? Lol. Meanwhile, the Republican front runner seems to have developed a taste for criminality that'll see him far and away the better candidate for worst spray tan on his cell block.

GDP year over year grew by 4.9%, the highest number in some two years. Going to be some serious panic on behalf of the Republicans.

I can guarantee you that this number will magically be decreased in the coming weeks and the media won't report on it.

It's amazing how you are like "OMG THIS IS THE BEST GDP BIDEN HAS HAD SO FAR!" Had he not implemented his "Bidenomics" that brought about "Bidinflation" we wouldn't be in the shit economy we're currently in.

But hey.. you got a raise in your welfare check.. so to you, it's doing well!

The increase in consumer spending reflected increases in both services and goods. Within services, the leading contributors were housing and utilities, health care, financial services and insurance, and food services and accommodations. Within goods, the leading contributors to the increase were other nondurable goods (led by prescription drugs) as well as recreational goods and vehicles

Great news guys. Taxpayers got to spend more on housing, utilities, health care, credit card debt, food and medication. Basically, people are paying for bare necessities with their credit cards at record high interest rates.

People don't need government estimations to know how their money is being spent. Nobody is buying that "Bidenomics" is improving their quality of life. At this point "production goals" being announced over the telescreen, have no basis in reality and people aren't at the level of doublethink needed to ignore the balance of their checkbooks.

Truck Driver Destroys Entire EV Narrative in Under 2 Minutes

Truck Driver Destroys Entire EV Narrative in Under 2 Minutes

By Warner Todd Huston
October 30, 2023 at 12:32pm
Truck driver and innovator Chace Barber of Canada’s Edison Motors recently reeled off the perfect explanation of why expecting semi-trucks and other large vehicles to go all electric is a bad idea, and it’s a must-see clip.

Speaking at an event showing off his Edison Motors hybrid truck model, Barber was asked if he ever saw the trucking industry going fully electric instead of gas, diesel, and hybrid.

His answer about electric vehicles was illuminating.

When asked if the over-the-road trucking industry could go all EV, Barber’s initial answer was short and to the point. “No,” he said straight away.

He went on to explain, “If battery technology gets better, grid infrastructure gets better,” maybe, he added.

But it isn’t looking good so far.

“But like this truck,” he said pointing to his new hybrid logging truck, “like a logging truck uses about two and a half megawatts of power per day with extra capacity on the battery means you need a three-megawatt battery pack.”

“The biggest one is like a Tesla semi, which is like a one megawatt. So, you need three megawatts to run an electric truck,” he continued.

“That would mean you would have to pack 50,000 — 40,000, 50,000 — pounds of batteries just to do a full day,” he said.

This amount of weight added to a semi-truck would present all sorts of issues. Not only would it make it less safe on the road by increasing stopping power in an emergency, that amount of added weight also adds to the swift degradation of roads which would cause more potholes to appear faster and increase construction budgets for governments that are tasked with maintaining the road surfaces.

On top of that, insurance rates will skyrocket because EVs are not as impervious to accidents as regular vehicles. EVs are more easily damaged — causing insurers to more often rate them as “totaled” — and that causes EVs to have to be fully replaced by an insurer far, far more often than a gas-powered vehicle.

Then there is the huge problem with the power grid, Barber added.

“And then let’s say we can even get those batteries down to the same weight where it’s reasonable, the grid infrastructure — we haven’t invested in our electrical grid since the 1950s, 1960s, 70s, like you can give me an example, the logging truck in BC [British Columbia], that’s a niche industry. So, there’s 5,000 logging trucks that haul logs,” he explained.

“At two and a half megawatts of consumption per day, that’s twelve and a half gigawatts of power,” he said. “Site C dam has been under construction for the last, oh, I don’t know, the last 15 years at a cost of $20 billion, and that has a 1.1 gigawatt. So, a $20 billion dam that takes 15 years to build has a 1.1 gigawatt capacity, and logging trucks — just logging trucks alone — are using 12 and a half gigawatts. You would have to flood an area of land the size of Wales to produce that hydropower.”

“Look, we need a lot to make a fully electric feasible on the North American grid with batteries and all that,” he said of fully electric fleets of trucks.

But he did have a sensible solution.

“But if you can make it more efficient and you can make it a hybrid, and you can reduce your fuel consumption by 50 percent, and you can burn that as a generator, where it’s one R.P.M., running hot, burning cleaner,” he said.

“Well, isn’t a 50-60 percent reduction in emissions a lot better than investing everything into a fully electric technology that’s not really going to work for 90 percent of the applications, meaning that the other 100 percent are still burning 100 percent of the diesel?” Barber concluded.

The facts remain that large vehicles like buses, trucks, semis, or vehicles used for hauling and heavy-duty applications are simply not suited for electric technology as it stands today. And people just don’t want them.

The latter is also something that dealers are starting to realize as they are running out of the sort of EV early adopting customers who were excited about the technology. Dealers are now finding thousands of brand-new EVs sitting on their car lots going unsold to a country that really isn’t interested in them.

Sadly, Barber’s cautions certainly make too much sense for politicians who want to go all-in for EVs and want to force us all into them whether they are logical, feasible, or tech-ready or not.

the truck driver hit a few key points like the sheer weight of the batteries. He missed the COST of the batteries and if they need to be replaced it basically totals the vehicles. Also where is that electricity coming from? Only small amounts of the overall grid are "renewable" and I wont even go into what the batteries are made of or the waste that comes with building "green" architecture.

Conservative media is hyperventilating that the Federal Reserve isn't reducing interest rates due to the added expense it costs the nation to pay it's interest obligations. Maybe they ought to consider how unfunded tax cuts, paired with unfunded wars, and massive corporate welfare is counterintuitive to claims of being fiscally responsible. George H W Bush certainly got a schelacking for claiming to not raise taxes, then being so fiscally responsible as trying to pay for the Gulf War with new revenues.

Then why is Biden and the Democrats in Congress demanding a bill for emergency money to Israel, even more to Ukraine, and for supposedly securing our boarders without additional revenue streams or cutting spending in other areas? When your neighbors house is burning down, do you tell them you can't lend them your water hose because you're afraid of the water bill becoming due next month, of course not. I'm not sure what money you think is available from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that can be used by Biden to pay for anything, given Congress has the power of the purse it is unconstitutional for him to do what you're proposing. Even were it not unconstitutional, should Americans benefiting from the IRA see a curtailment of those benefits on the basis of the need to support Israel and Ukraine? I think not.

I don’t speak for Anebriated, but the gist of it is our country never imagined a federal income tax until it was forced down our throats to support a big war. Back when the sixteenth amendment was passed it was promised to only be a small tax for the wealthiest Americans.

Why should we be in favor of paying taxes to wastefully fund all these government agencies & wars when our own President setup a bunch of shell companies to launder money that he received as bribes from foreign agents for his political favors? You are not going to convince anyone that it’s the moral high ground to hand over up to 37% of your income to the IRS so our federal government can go $33T in debt & use that money on important things like the tyrannical alphabet agencies.

Sure if we want to go with the fact that the courts ruled it as unlawful so congress went out and forced it into existance, there are questions about it being properly ratified(which of course the courts shot down because yay tax revenue is good!). Theres also the question of why we cant audit the fed, if our tax dollars are being used to pay down debt service then we deserve to see the breakdown. I mean sure we can just turn a blind eye to all of the semi questionable but suspiciously legal actions that have occured. Good little government puppet you are fighting their fight for them to make sure you keep getting your handouts.

You can love your country, admit it is flawed and work to make it better. America is a country with perfect ideals and imperfect people. We are at our best when we strive to live up to the promise of these ideals. Lately those ideals have been shifted by some who seem to be working against the everyday people and that is what we are fighting back against and working to change.

Except the things your ilk commonly complain about, taxes in this instance, aren't flawed. You only think they are because you're stupid, and somehow think a country with our funded advancements, military might, and infrastructure can be maintained without the taxes that made them possible. There hasn't been a balanced budget in the United States since a Democrat, namely Bill Clinton, put it into law. Republicans since then have done everything in their power to destroy the financial stability of our nation. can do all of that for a lot less than we are currently spending. In fact if we wanted to the US could operate at a surplus while still taking care of the basic needs of the US Citizens and protecting our borders.

I think most of us would be ok with lets say a flat 10% sales tax on new items. Its really all thats needed. We just need to stop mismanaging the money coming in and start using the natural resources we have. The current system is set up to keep everyone poor and dependent on the government.

So several years ago I upgraded from H&R Block to legit short little Jew man CPA tax specialist that’s qualified to handle the complexity of my real estate investments (dealing with stuff like property depreciation, naming my stay at home wife as a “real estate professional”, and a bunch of other real boring shit). He’s not cheap but he finds some pretty amazing & creative deductions. I pay the very bare minimum in federal income tax possible, but even after all that I still have to write the IRS a check. Every year I consider including a little note with that check telling them to go fuck their mother, but the little Jew man talks me out of it.

This is not intended to be a flex. The point of me saying that is I’d rather do just about anything with that money other than handing it to the federal government. They waste it on stupid shit that I don’t really have a say in. I'm not surprised someone as dumb as you bought into Trump's fantasy that he could classify any documents merely by thinking about it. "However, Gomes released a video in October that appeared to show two women stuffing heaps of ballot papers into drop boxes at least four locations across the city."

"The defense of the city officials argued that the security camera footage doesn’t prove anything illegal took place — citing “not one voter” has testified about their ballot being mishandled. All allegations were for “ballot harvesting” and not that ballots were doctored or fake."

It's only "ballot harvesting"... nothing at all illegal going on. Wonder why one side always fights for "ballot harvesting" and fights against "Voter ID laws"?

Republicans took an absolute beating at the polls yesterday, a total rebuke of their nonsense social issues and obsession with pretending moderates would support a radical Christian fundamentalist agenda.

Abortion rights advocates win major victories in Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia

Abortion rights advocates won major victories Tuesday as voters in conservative-leaning Ohio decisively passed a constitutional amendment guaranteeing access to abortion, while those in ruby-red Kentucky reelected a Democratic governor who aggressively attacked his opponent for supporting the state’s near-total ban on the procedure.

In Virginia, a battleground state where Republicans pushed a proposal to outlaw most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, Democrats were projected to take control of the state legislature after campaigning heavily on preserving access.

The results sent a stark signal about enduring demands across the political spectrum to protect access to abortion more than a year after Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court, heralding potentially far-reaching implications for the 2024 election. They offered more evidence that the end of Roe and the patchwork of abortion bans that followed have given Democrats a powerful argument to turn out their base and sway moderates and some Republicans. And they reaffirmed that GOP candidates who support restrictions are still struggling to find an effective message, even as some have tried to soften their pitch.

If I were an antiabortion politician, I’d be scared,” said Tresa Undem, a public opinion researcher who studies abortion and supports abortion rights.

The most direct test of abortion politics came in Ohio, where abortion rights supporters entered Tuesday optimistic that a ballot measure called Issue 1 would pass. Ohioans had already weighed in on a referendum viewed a proxy for the abortion fight, voting in August against a proposal that would have boosted abortion opponents’ chances on Issue 1 by making it harder to amend the state constitution.

Kate Wagner, 51, a registered Republican who has drifted away from the party, said she discussed Issue 1 extensively with her sisters and was voting yes. She didn’t think she would get an abortion, but she also views the issue as deeply personal.

“My whole thing is that I don’t like the idea of typically old White men telling me what I should be able to do,” said Wagner, who is from Springfield, Ohio. “They’ve never been in that position.”

Preliminary exit polls had 1 in 5 Republicans and nearly two-thirds of independents backing the amendment, in a striking illustration of abortion rights’ popularity across party lines. With most of the vote counted late Tuesday, Issue 1 was projected to pass by a 10-point margin, while another ballot measure to legalize the recreational use of marijuana was projected to pass, 56 to 44 percent.

Antiabortion advocates had tried to broaden their appeal by stressing that abortion is currently legal in Ohio until 22 weeks of pregnancy — not mentioning that, without further protections for abortion, the state’s Supreme Court could at any time reinstate a ban on the procedure after six weeks of pregnancy.

A clear majority of Ohio voters said they felt “dissatisfied” or “angry” about the overturning of Roe, according to preliminary network exit polling. And while Donald Trump won Ohio by eight percentage points in 2020, the exit polls found a somewhat larger share of voters for President Biden in 2020 turning out for Issue 1 compared with Trump voters — suggesting that Democrats were particularly motivated.

But antiabortion advocates were adamant that Ohio should not be seen as a test case for 2024.

“I think people are overinterpreting what this means on a national level,” said Kristi Hamrick, vice president of media and policy for Students for Life of America, one of the largest national antiabortion groups. “Each fight is unique.”

Abortion was just one factor of many in the complex races that played out Tuesday, testing voters’ mood and satisfaction with both parties. Democrats were working to outperform an unpopular president; Republicans were facing their own woes with chaos in Congress and continued fealty to former president Trump, a polarizing figure to many moderate voters who is well-positioned to become the party’s 2024 presidential nominee.

Yet the issue was an important through line, and strategists from both parties were watching closely for clues to their best path in 2024. That was evident in Kentucky, where the campaign of Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear put millions behind ads attacking his Republican challenger, Daniel Cameron, on abortion — even though Republicans’ supermajority in the legislature means the gubernatorial race’s impact on abortion policy is highly limited.

One of the first people Beshear thanked on Tuesday night was Hadley Duvall, a young woman who appeared in one of his campaign ads, which went viral. In the commercial, Duvall tells voters that she was sexually assaulted by her stepfather when she was 12 and blasts Cameron’s support for Kentucky’s abortion ban without exceptions for rape and incest.

“Because of her courage, this commonwealth is going to be a better place and people are going to reach out for the help they need,” Beshear said.

In interviews, it was clear the ad had made an impression with Democrats and Republicans alike — and abortion was often one of the first issues that Kentuckians, especially young voters, brought up while explaining their pick for governor. Cameron said this fall he would sign exceptions for abortions in cases of rape and incest if legislators passed them, but he has also defended the current law in court.

“People who aren’t ready to have kids, people who can’t raise children, need and deserve that option,” said Rebekah Flowers, a 20-year-old student at the University of Louisville, calling Cameron “extreme” on abortion. She was a bit disappointed that Beshear didn’t mention the issue in his brief remarks at a rally on her campus last week.

Just a few years ago, Republicans in Kentucky were the ones leaning into abortion as a line of attack. But after the end of Roe, which established a constitutional right to abortion, it has become a potent issue for Democrats. Voters there last year declined to amend their state constitution to say it does not guarantee a right to abortion access — underscoring a deep disconnect between public opinion and the near-total abortion ban that took effect in Kentucky after Roe fell.

Some Republicans have tried to soften their pitch on abortion and appeal to moderates after strict bans helped sink many GOP candidates in last year’s midterms. But Tuesday’s elections underscored the party’s continued vulnerability on the issue.

“I believe that voters — Democrats, independents and a growing number of Republicans — are going to support those candidates, [irrespective] of their party affiliation, who are going to protect and strengthen our democracy and who are going to restore those freedoms that politicians have taken away from us,” said Rep. Greg Landsman (D), who represents a purple district in Ohio.

Democrats have already signaled they will make abortion a key issue in the presidential race, no matter who is the GOP nominee. Republican candidates are divided on the issue, with Trump backing away from the strict bans he paved the way for by appointing antiabortion justices to the Supreme Court.

Despite that retreat, “there is nothing that will be complicated about attacking [Trump] on this issue,” said Pat Dennis, the president of American Bridge, a Democratic group that has focused much of its opposition research on Republican candidates on their abortion stances.

There are also efforts underway to put abortion directly on the 2024 ballot in many other states, including the crucial battlegrounds of Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

Democrats had been optimistic heading into Tuesday’s votes, buoyed by the fact that, since Roe was overturned, voters had backed abortion rights in ballot measure fights in six states across the political spectrum: California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana and Vermont.

Abortion was also front and center in many down-ballot races. In Pennsylvania, a key swing state, a state Supreme Court race drew more than $17 million in TV ad spending, with many of the ads touching on abortion rights. Democrat Daniel McCaffery, who was projected to win, began one of his ads by saying that “our freedoms are under attack — workers’ rights, women’s reproductive rights, the right to vote.”

After a series of defeats since the Supreme Court overturned Roe, many antiabortion advocates saw Tuesday’s contests as their last opportunity to find a winning message on abortion ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

Across Virginia, Republicans tried to win over moderates with a 15-week abortion ban, emphasizing that such a measure would allow the vast majority of abortions to continue. On the campaign trail, Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin was careful to refer to the proposed restriction as a “limit” on abortion, avoiding the word “ban.”

“I think this is a choice between no limits and reasonable limits, and I think this is one where Virginians come together around reasonableness,” Youngkin said in a television interview Sunday.

Is it really “radical Christian fundamentalist agenda” to put any sort of limit / restriction on abortion though? I take it you are one of those that believe it’s a woman’s right to extinguish a life all the way up until birth?

Democrats won't define it.. they just chant "Republicans want to take away your rights!" and the retarded base blindly follows.

But I blame the Republicans for not holding Democrats' feet to the fire. DEFINE when it's ok to get an abortion up to and when it's not. Pass a federal law, protecting the women's rights to get an abortion up to that specific time period. Take away the Democrat talking points of rape and incest and women's health danger by including them into the law.

The Democrats don't want this because "REPUBLICANS WANT TO TAKE AWAY YOUR RIGHTS" sells and gets votes.

“I will not be running for reelection to the United States Senate but what I will be doing is traveling the country and speaking out to see if there is an interest in creating a movement to mobilize the middle and bring Americans together,” Manchin said in a message posted on social media.

"Violence and hatred hit streets of London on Armistice Day of shame"

LOL... have to love how they describe the 2 groups... they used the term "far-Right protesters" about 20 times in the article... which means actual Brits were protesting the 800k+ "Peaceful" Pro-Palestinian protest taking place...

Know what the "far-Right protesters" had the gall to yell?

"Chants of “England til I die” and “You’re not English any more” were heard as they charged police lines."

So they were calling out for British citizens... and I guess that's "far-right" now.

Want to guess what the "Peaceful" Pro-Palestinian protesters were calling for?

"Gathering from mid-morning the marchers, including families with children, carried Palestinian flags or placards emblazoned with slogans such as “Free Palestine”, “End Israeli apartheid” and “Baby killer Biden stop arming Israel”.

"There were chants and placards proclaiming “From the river to the sea, Palestine must be free” – a slogan widely interpreted as calling for the destruction of the state of Israel."

"Several of the stickers and placards held by protesters appeared to have been produced by the Friends of al-Aqsa group, founded and chaired by Ismael Patel, a Leicester-based optician who has repeatedly voiced his support for Hamas."

But you know... the ones you should really be scared of are those "far-right", actual British citizens, claiming support for their country... and hating what they are having to experience.

Remember... the George Floyd protests were "peaceful" also.

They've got the lemmings trained properly.

Pope Sparks Outrage After Firing Anti-LGBTQ Texas Bishop: 'Dictator'

Pope Francis has received backlash for his decision to remove Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, who has been a vocal critic of Francis' efforts to make the church more welcoming for the LBGTQ+ community.

Strickland has publicly scrutinized Francis for the Pope's attempt to change the Church's position on social issues, such as transgender rights and same-sex marriage.

In August, Strickland wrote an open letter to the "sons and daughters in Christ," where he reiterated the "basic truths" of the Church, including how God sees marriage as "between one man and one woman" and how a "disordered attempt to reject" someone's "undeniable biological and God-given identity" should not be supported.

Most recently, Strickland called Francis' three-week long closed-door meeting on controversial issues facing the Church a "travesty." Francis hosted the meeting in October, discussing issues like women in governance roles and welcoming LGBTQ+ members into the Church.

Strickland's governance of the diocese was investigated earlier this year by the Vatican. Following their investigation, a recommendation was given to Francis that "the continuation in office of Bishop Strickland was not feasible," said Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, the head of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston in Texas, on Saturday. The investigation's findings were never released.

The Vatican asked Strickland to resign on Thursday. When Strickland refused to resign, Francis removed him from office on Saturday, according to DiNardo's statement. Strickland had insisted that he would not voluntarily leave his position in the church, saying in media interviews that he was given a mandate to serve by the late Pope Benedict XVI and couldn't abdicate that responsibility.
