EVs do have regenerative braking and shit. Basically, EVs brake pads last a loooot longer than a regular cars, because they use the motors to slow them down, kinda like down shifting, and that energy is gathered to charge the battery. You're really only using your actually brakes if you slam on them or at the very last moment when you are slowing down to a stop.

Still, even with friction, and other things, such as AC (which is required to run to cool the battery/motors), computers, radios, etc.. There are just a lot of draws for power.

You would still experience energy "loss" (the energy really isn't lost it's just turned into energy that can't be reused in a way that will power the car). Even a battery that sits and does nothing will lose charge over time because it's sitting there creating a magnetic field.

It wouldn't really matter. It uses way more power to move a 1 ton vehicle (which would actually be even heavier once you consider passengers, cargo, and the increased weight of the batteries) than what would be generated via capturing the power created by the tires moving. Sure it could help recharge the battery so you can get more mileage out of your charge before you have to recharge, but the cost/benefit probably isn't worth it because I don't think any electric vehicles capture the power generated by the tires moving.

Some electric vehicles (might just be PHEV and hybrids) capture the power generated when the car brakes, but even then it's only generating a few miles worth, not nearly enough to power the car by itself.

I'm just saying at the moment we're looking at 15-30 minutes at best, and even then only a few types of electric vehicles can manage this with large batteries, all other EVs take hours to charge or have a very small battery, and even then it can take hours.

I know we got some smart people on here - engineer types, so on... I've always wondered this... hopefully I explain the concept well enough to get an answer.

A wind turbine spins to generate electricity. The spinning is created by the wind turning the turbine.

Why does this concept not work for an ever-charging battery in a car? You have 4 tires spinning, which creates the same rotational force continuously while a vehicle is in motion. Why does this spinning action of the wheels, not recharge the battery similar to a wind turbine?

Hope that makes sense, but that concept has always confused me. Why would we need recharging stations? If the spinning action of the wheels recharged the batteries during motion? So technically, shouldn't the battery only need an initial charge off the manufacturing line?

Par tof it is, even when the electric engine is out, it still charges while regular driving and kicks on. I see it often enough when I'm driving, my current MPG will go from 32 to 99, which is when the electric is on.

The explanation of why the rotational energy of spinning tires can't be harnessed as we do turbines in hydroelectric and wind turbines boils down to efficiency. The hypothetical power produced using current technology wouldn't overcome the loss of kinetic energy already present between tire and road. To maintain a constant rate of speed the car is consuming more power than the electromagnets would produce. So introducing more drag would cause a further consumption of power.

Now when you're braking, a lot of hybrids make use of regenerative braking to use the heat caused by brake friction to generate usable electricity. That's existing technology which is getting better.

Your alternator is doing something akin to what Shaps inquired about to maintain a charge on your battery, transferring mechanical power via drive belts. So in a way it's been working in a limited sense for a while.

It is a LOT cheaper for gas for me. I'm paying about $20 more for my electric bill and getting a 7500 tax rebate next April. I've only gone to the gas station while going on a long trip for vacation.

That's what I've been looking at, where you might break even and start saving money from buying an EV vs an ICE vehicle.

Take an AWD gas car that costs $30k new off the lot.
You could spend upwards of $2500 a year on gas and oil changes for the 14K miles an average person drives a year (could be more or could be less depending on where you live and how much you drive).
That's $32,500 for the first year owning the car.


Take a similar AWD electric car that costs $45k and gets similar mileage on a full battery charge.
You could spend upwards of $750 a year on electricity to charge it for the 14K miles an average person drives a year (could be more or could be less depending on where you live and how much you drive).

Gas yearly cost vs electric yearly cost difference = $1750

Price difference of gas car vs electric car when purchased = $15,000

You're looking at about 9 years of vehicle ownership before you could start to save money from buying an EV over a gas vehicle.
On top of that, the average person currently keeps a car for 8-9 years. You might be looking to sell/trade in your vehicle by this time....so you're not really saving any money going EV over gas.
Also, EV batteries are only estimated to last 10-20 years, so by the time you get to that 9 year mark your car battery could be on the way out and you could spend upwards of $20k to replace it (it certainly could be significantly less, but even if it costs you $5k, that's still a lot of money) and you're back to paying more for an EV over a gas vehicle.

This is clearly a generalized summary, but should give somewhat of an outline what you could expect.
