Platforms have always had protections from liability, that’s why you can’t sue a bookstore if they sell a book that has libelous information in it because it would be impossible for a bookstore to read each book and research everything in it to make sure everything is okay, the bookstore is merely providing a place for people to sell their books. The book publisher, being a publisher, is in fact liable because they do read the book and research everything in it before publishing said book.

This law carries over to the internet.

Section 230 exists because the courts ruled that internet services would only be considered a platform if they didn’t moderate their site, but if they did moderate then they were considered a publisher. Section 230 allows service providers to remain a platform and thus safe from lawsuits even if they moderate the content on their sites, as long as the moderation is done in good faith, e.g. removing content that is overly violent.

Without 230 all Kranar would have to do is not moderate, which is something this forum doesn’t do much of anyways.

Parler agreed to terms of service with Google, Apple, and Amazon. And ALL of them include provisions about content that promotes violence or terrorism (Just like literally every other company who has a service involving user generated content). And the terms don't say that you can't have users who are creating that kind of content- they say that you must have a content moderation strategy that makes a good faith effort to take that content down as quickly as possible.

Parler refused to do that.

Apple, Google, AND Amazon had been warning Parler for weeks that it needed to create an effective and serious moderation policy- which is a requirement EVERY other UGC service that works with them has to meet..

Then there was a damn terrorist attack, and it turns out that people on Parler were planning their violence for it on the service. And the jackass CEO did a public interview where he said that people planning terrorism on Parler wasn't really his problem.

Apple even gave them another 24 hours afterwards to do what they promised they would do in their ToS. And the jackass STILL refused.

So riddle me this: why the hell should Parler be exempt from the ToS everyone else has to follow? Because conservatives use it? And why should Google, Apple, and Amazon be forced to be complicit in and be associated with a service that shrugs at terrorism being planned on their app?

Long before 230 was even a thing the courts already ruled that there is a difference between a publisher (book publishing companies, news papers, etc) and entities that merely provide a platform and don't curate the content of others (libraries, newsstands, bookstores, dentist offices that have magazines in the waiting room, etc.) The former could be sued for defamation, the latter could not.

Reason being the guy running a newsstand on a street corner isn't going to read each and every newspaper, magazine, and book he sells to ensure only content he approves of is sold. This is much different from a book publisher which does read each and every single book they sell to ensure only content they approve of is sold.

The reason 230 came about is because when the internet was starting to get popular and was cheap enough for most regular folk to afford the courts had to decide when a service provider was acting as a publisher or if they were merely providing a platform. The courts decided if the company took a hands off approach they were a platform and thus not liable for defamation and the like, if the company was moderating the speech of others then they were a publisher and open to lawsuits.

Congress decided an all or nothing approach was a bit too much and thus 230 was born which allowed internet providers to remain platforms even if they engaged in good faith moderating. Problem is internet companies haven't been acting in good faith in many years and are totally taking advantage of section 230.

In short: you are wrong as per usual.

Apple, Google, AND Amazon had been warning Parler for weeks that it needed to create an effective and serious moderation policy- which is a requirement EVERY other UGC service that works with them has to meet..

Then there was a damn terrorist attack, and it turns out that people on Parler were planning their violence for it on the service. And the jackass CEO did a public interview where he said that people planning terrorism on Parler wasn't really his problem.

Apple even gave them another 24 hours afterwards to do what they promised they would do in their ToS. And the jackass STILL refused.

Long before 230 was even a thing the courts already ruled that there is a difference between a publisher (book publishing companies, news papers, etc) and entities that merely provide a platform and don't curate the content of others (libraries, newsstands, bookstores, dentist offices that have magazines in the waiting room, etc.) The former could be sued for defamation, the latter could not.

Reason being the guy running a newsstand on a street corner isn't going to read each and every newspaper, magazine, and book he sells to ensure only content he approves of is sold. This is much different from a book publisher which does read each and every single book they sell to ensure only content they approve of is sold.

The reason 230 came about is because when the internet was starting to get popular and was cheap enough for most regular folk to afford the courts had to decide when a service provider was acting as a publisher or if they were merely providing a platform. The courts decided if the company took a hands off approach they were a platform and thus not liable for defamation and the like, if the company was moderating the speech of others then they were a publisher and open to lawsuits.

Congress decided an all or nothing approach was a bit too much and thus 230 was born which allowed internet providers to remain platforms even if they engaged in good faith moderating. Problem is internet companies haven't been acting in good faith in many years and are totally taking advantage of section 230.

NEW YORK — A lawyer for PBS resigned Tuesday after being caught describing President Donald Trump as “close to Hitler” in a right-wing sting operation.

Michael Beller, a contracts lawyer in PBS’ general counsel office, was recorded offering political opinions in what appeared to be a barroom conversation with a woman. It was released Tuesday by Project Veritas, a conservative group known for using undercover methods to reveal supposed liberal bias.

Beller is heard saying it was “great” that coronavirus cases were spiking in red states because they might infect Trump voters and suggested Republican voters should have their children put in re-education camps.

The lawyer did not speak on behalf of PBS or make any editorial decisions, PBS spokesman Jeremy Gaines said.

“There is no place for hateful rhetoric at PBS, and this individual’s views in no way reflect our values or opinions,” he said.

Efforts to reach Beller were unsuccessful.

My oldest knows I smoke. She doesn't care, and doesn't think any less of me for it. My youngest is a couple of years from that level of honesty. Oh yeah, I cancelled all 4 of my accounts with no comment other than Loot Cap. I may have to renew another month to finish selling, and if I do, it'll have the same reason when I cancel again. I sent an e-mail to feedback within a few days of it rolling out as well, because it's complete bullshit. That said, I've made peace with it, accomplished any goals I wanted to when coming back, primarily capping my characters, and so I'll enjoy some cash on my way out and happily move on. Edibles don't really affect me unfortunately. I don't know if it is my metabolism or what, but I've eaten 1000 mg before at once (2 500mg nerd ropes) and even after 3-4 hours I barely felt anything. Most people I know are good or past good with 100-200 mg. Anytime I made cannabutter growing up, even with kief, others would get high and I would not. That said, I can smoke a single bowl and be great. I usually have some carts on hand as well, but those are more of a convenience thing, as they're rougher on the lungs from a feeling perspective than smoking is.

My entire persona doesn't revolve around weed. It is one component of it. Old people will never get it, so sure. Not only do I love weed, but I'm a bit of a pyromaniac hence why my casters in game tend to take the fire path every time. Hence, Blazar is a well suited handle.
