Say good bye to the rigid, fixed rotations of the past, and hello to the priority-based playstyle of Cataclysm:


Diseases > Dark Transformation > SS if both Unholy and/or all Death runes are up > FeS if both pairs of Blood and Frost runes are up >


DC if SD, 100 RP, will overcap RP with anything else or if RC isn’t up > SS > FeS > DC > HoW.That likely looks much more intimidating and, in general, complicated than it actually is:

Keeping up diseases is, as it’s (almost) always been, the most important thing, partially for their own potent damage, but primarily because they boost everything else we do. While diseases may only last 33 seconds and Outbreak has an unreducable 60 second cooldown, Festering Strike will bridge the gap, making it so you never have to resort to IT or PS in regular play on a single target.

Then comes Dark Transformation, whose uptime needs to be maximized for optimal dps. DT boosts your Ghoul’s damage by a truckload – a straight up 100% buff overall, plus a 20% Claw specific boost, on top of Claw then cleaving. The second you can DT, you do – no exceptions unless, of course, your ghoul is unable to attack the boss at the time.

You never want to waste runes, which is why SS and FeS when both of their respective rune costs are up comes next.

Just as you don’t want to waste runes, you don’t want to waste potential Sudden Doom procs (by having it just override a yet-to-be-used current one), runic power, or potential Runic Corruption (by having back-to-back procs), which is why you prioritize DC here.

After all of the above is factored away you simply SS, FeS, and DC. The order doesn’t actually particularly matter unless the mob’s death is imminent – in which case you go in that order. If you can, you want to try and avoid back-to-back Death Coils, due to the aforementioned potential loss of RC uptime.

It’s worth noting that on a fight where a npc is constantly healing itself and you can count on the full absorb to be consumed (and the prevented healing would have meant that much more damage needing to be dealt), Necrotic Strike does replace Scourge Strike in your rotation.

The AoE rotation isn’t terribly different from the single target one:


Diseases > Dark Transformation > Death and Decay > SS if both Unholy and/or all Death runes are up > BB + IT if both pairs of Blood and Frost runes are up >


DC if SD, 100 RP, will overcap RP with anything else or if RC isn’t up > SS > BB + IT > DC > HoW.Whenever you apply diseases, you also want to then spread them with Pestilence. As long as there’s at least one mob up who will survive for their full duration (or, of course, more mobs who may live for less), Pestilence is worth it.

Death and Decay is an AoE juggernaut as much as ever (although, yes, Dark Transformation is still more important due to the cleave). As long as there are three mobs who will be in the effect for at least 8 ticks (or two mobs who will be in it for all 12 ticks, if you have it glyphed), DnD is worth using.

Blood Boil use, for Unholy, always results in a leftover Frost rune which one has no choice but to use for Icy Touch. The two, in combination, replace Festering Strike in your rotation. As long as there are three or more mobs present, BB + IT is worth using in place of FeS.

When AoEing, you should always switch to Frost Presence.

Everything else remains relatively unchanged.

Ok the damage is about right, the rotation is a touch screwy with the lack of outbreak (lvl 81 talent). Overall I'm ok with the state of unholy 2h DPS in PvE. Haven't tried any PvP yet.

It will take some practice to properly use FeS vs SS but hey that's what practice is for. I felt like sometimes I was wasting death runes on FeS but it will get better as I become more familiar with it.

Low level pvp got nerfed big time.

I was running dungeons last night to try and get a feel for this new rotation. My crit chance went from 24% to 17% and I am trying to figure out WHERE.

I had to rebuy all of my pvp glyphs last night. They didnt really help much. Arcane shot at an increased 12% whoo? Someone pulled the dps list for the dungeons last night and it was sad....i was in the middle somewhere.

So yeah. For the next 15 levels I will be relearning this game, relearning my character and nursing my pvp addiction with dungeons if I am not getting ganked by EVERY OTHER CLASS in Northrend (yep). :-/

Damnit, you just had to keep talking about the changes...

I haven't played unholy, or DW frost since the patch, but I was DW frost and 2h unholy before, and I am doing at least 1-2k more damage with a 2h frost spec now. Though I haven't really been able to test it beyond ignis for the weekly. Hoping for ICC25 pug this weekend.

As Zenlyth mentioned, being able to purchase Wrathful gear without the listed rating requirement is not a bug. Currently the tooltips are incorrectly still listing the rating requirement, but only Honor points are required for purchase.

Howling blast is what makes it really fun for me now. And half of playing it is just spamming frost strike.

The best part is that they reduced Howling Blast to one frost rune, so if you glyph it to apply frost fever, it can replace icy touch.

Play smart, don't have them out on DB when the beasts are coming. Same way tanks and all the other melee can't spam AoE abilities.

I have all the Defias gear right now and constantly looking for upgrades where I can get them.

Is resetting your spec going to cost more later for some reason? As it is now, the cost only goes up, if you actually use it. So if you don't respec once, until 80, first one is still only one gold. Then it goes up by small amounts until it supposedly caps out.

No sure exactly what/how the cap works. I was under the impression it capped at 50g, but I only hit it once, and then wound up paying 45g, on the same guy over and over, and now its costing me 52g for some reason.

Still it sounds like your a low level, so realistically if your doing pulling dps numbers as good as the others in your randoms, there really isnt much reason to respec atm. Unless you don't like it, or just like to always have the best spec etc.

Combat took a nerf but I still would see it being a faster lvl'ing spec simply because of constant SnD.

I've got 2 specs on my rogue and I'm loving the sub spec at the moment (granted all I'm doing is PvP).

Respec will not cost more as your lvls increase. Only the number of times you respec increases the cost.

There's tons of threads posted and lots of promising solutions. I have one that I've been testing for three days and have not had as much as lag spike when mousing over cogs. This works if you're willing to disable tooltips when you are anywhere a cog icon might show up.

You will need to create two macros, for "turn off tooltips" and "turn on tooltips".

Turn Off Tooltips
/script GameTooltip.Temphide = function() GameTooltip:Hide() end; GameTooltip:SetScript("OnShow", GameTooltip.Temphide);

Turn On Tooltips
/script GameTooltip:SetScript("OnShow", GameTooltip.Show);

This should get you through until the official fix comes down from Blizzard. Happy hunting!

That's pretty much all I've done. I just SS until my finger bleeds and rotate SnD and Recup. I don't even bother with using other skills. I do regularly consistant damage. Sometimes I have to watch myself depending on who is tanking because I generate a ton of threat in a short time span.

And for general knowledge, I assume you have to be lvl 70-80 to do the Headless Horseman quest, yes?

and i dont have a clue about rogue specs since i havent played one yet, but while i was doing randoms with my 35 hunter, there was a 35 rogue, who would use ambush, and his DPS skyrocketed, he couldnt sustain the damage output, but the ambush itself was just freakish. he would open up with like almost 400dps. I cant get that without AOE.

if it was just one mob that went down quickly, he would end with like 380ish dps while i was at 120-180

some other rogue was talking about his 80 killing with one shot against non-pvp geared characters sometimes, and two shots regularly

Yes, we buffed the 5 paladin direct heals (FoL, HL, DL, HS, WoG). This is a change for both level 80 and 85. We are going to tone down Holy Radiance as I described in the other thread. It can be powerful without being 75% of paladin healing.

It is possible we will nerf Word of Glory for Prot and Ret at 85 to compensate for this buff since they probably don't need stronger Words.

I'm sitting around 30k gold right now, which is more than enough for me, as I don't have to buy 5k 310% flying on my priest, and only am gonna level 2 other 80s initially.

Yes, I gather my own herbs and ore utilizing gatherer, gathermate and routes.

I didn't really do much to make the money tbh. I'd made 20 of every glyph available prior to the patch (I use Quick Auctions to craft, mail and list them on the AH at predefined ranges). I wasn't selling them much before the patch so I'd stopped with it, and when the patch hit every person wanted every glyph, so the market skyrocketed.

I lucked into it is all. Glyphs I was selling for 2-3G are selling now for 175g. People are nuts if you ask me. I actually feel kind of guilty about it, but I always list way below the ridiculous amounts like 175 - I usually sell them for 100. I imagine it will die down in a week or so though, once folks have their mains and alts set up. I'm just selling inventory I already had, no sense making more.

No, I just buy my herbs and ore. Skinning is the one thing I will do to gather for myself, its real easy and quick.

But pretty much anything else I can do for gold will make me more gold per minute than the herbs/ore I could gather in the same time frame would be worth. So I would basically be throwing gold away, AND be bored as fuck at the same time.

I have however leveled a miner twice for some reason, even though I never go out and mine once I hit 450. And I am in the process of learning herbalism on a bunch of guys I am leveling. But that is more a side effect to hunting/leveling. Free herbs for a bit of time. Once I get one to 450 I'd probably stop gathering herbs on them as well.

I will probably have to mine as soon as cata hits though. Won't be buying overpriced ore I unless I just can't farm ore myself due to too many other people doing it. I cannot imagine how crowded it will be in the new leveling zones.

Levelling up in the first weeks of the expansion are always fun because there's kind of a competition with your guildies, and the realm firsts (though those all went to Assent on our server), and there is massssssssssssssssss world PvP for quest mobs. I'll kill any Alliance who is hunting the same shit for my quests.

I tried a battleground for the first time today, trying to decide if I wanted to consider playing on a PvP server. My decision can to a resounding no. I have no skill for PvP what so ever. I spent about 2 hours trying to get the hang of it, but no dice.

Im on dunelol with the rest of these guys. I was off work for two days so in the past week I have gone from 48-65 on my shaman. I have been in exactly one fight. I saw a shadow over my head and panned up to see a DK. Fire shock/lava burst one shot him and never saw him again. I mean yah were on a pvp server but you have to also understand we outnumber alliance like 2-1 and most people who are not in a battle ground would rather do their quests then get hassled the same as you.

Well...actually for you it might kind of be a nerf. They nerfed paladins instant cast HOT heal and buffed all our direct heals by 30%. So basically for PVE our hot is weaker but were back to being the best single target helaers in the game by far. Beacons duration expanded to 5 minutes, lay on hands no longer grants mana.

Also cooldown on avenger shield lowered, prot talent now allows holy power to be generated from divine plea. Ret was slightly buffed in overall damage but burst damage was nerfed. Hammer was nerfed severly but exorcism was buffed.

Hammer nerf was needed. It does retarded amounts of damage right now. I was running an instance with a ret yesterday and his top damage ability was HoW and he only used it 18 times the whole run while crusader strike was used 180 times and was like 2% below that.


As for prot, avenger's shield was lowered from 24 to 15, but the talent they changed did that anyway. The divine plea change on that talent was needed because if shit is hitting the fan and we need holy power right now, we had no way to generate it. It's almost a paladin version of bloodrage. Shield of the Righteous and Guarded by the Light changes were nerfs.

Salv can WoG himself for 10k every 20 seconds completely untalented which is more than enough to solo old content. Talented before the nerf that would be 16k every 20 seconds. The nerf was likely for pvp and understandably since it would be pretty much impossible to kill two protection paladins in arena if they had left that. The survivability of WoG for protection is still kind of crazy. Its like crusader strike just summons a healer.

No. lvl 55-60 mobs. LBRS has been the best place I've found.

I only kill the bosses (to d/e the blues for large brilliant shards) other than that it's sub spec for stealth speed increase, pick pocket glyph for increased range, and auto loot.

Eh. Sub Spec and being lvl 62ish and you'd have zero issues in there. LBRS has no stealth detection mobs like BRD. Obviously the higher the level the more wiggle room you get.

I was laughing so hard last night. We were all playing like AD on a yoohoo bender and yet you can still find pugs that can wipe a heroic. It boggles the mind.

I jumped back into it after BG's for 20(or something) levels and am currently getting raged upon by the late night 70 farmers.

I have done a few dungeons on my level 74 hunter lately when I was bored. I was very underwhelmed. AOE is awful, on trash pulls its pretty hard or impossible to keep up with tanks. Steady shot and multi shot is pretty much all you can do and the dps from that rotation is absolutely horrid. Bosses I just apply serpent sting and whenever its running out chimera shot. Aside from that steady shot ->arcane shot spam aimed shot when it procs and kill shot. Do about 1.5k-2k single target dps. I mean its not atrocious but its pretty bad compared to what other classes are doing right now. I could just be playing wrong but it feels like hunters got the short end of the stick pre-85.

My hunter is in boa items btw. So I think my dps would be substantially less if he was in greens/blues btw.

Agree to all of the above. My dps was cut by about 33% by 4.0. Switching to BM fixed a little of that. I'm guessing it will even out at 85? I just have to get there first. After questing for one whole level and I am now sick of questing (again) and decided to fast track via dungeons. BUT I NEED TO NOT SUCK. Some test runs through Nexus last night were difficult. I've decided not to go in again until I study a dungeon guide.

Ah, well reading wowhead if you look up the dungeons and then filter to patch 3.0.1 it will bring up the comments from people when the dungeon was first released. Theres usually useful information in there if you have not seen it before. Honestly the best way to learn wotlk dungeons at this point is with your face. Just stay behind the tank and try not to pull anything and pick it up as you go cause by the time you read up on nexus and become the nexus pro you will just ding 73 and all of a sudden be doing violet hold on and on to 80. Its different dungeons.

Put it on defensive and make a pet attack macro for serpent shot. I do the same with my lock so when i open up my pet immediately assists me.

I can guess why you're pet was pulling. Likely because of pathing jumping off ledges in nexxus. Whenever you jump over something that has a clear walking path a pet will choose to walk....right through mobs. So when you jump off ledges you have to dismiss and recall your pet. I can guess why you're pet was pulling. Likely because of pathing jumping off ledges in nexxus. Whenever you jump over something that has a clear walking path a pet will choose to walk....right through mobs. So when you jump off ledges you have to dismiss and recall your pet. They no longer do this as of 4.0.1 from what I've seen. They go into super hyperdrive to get back to your side but don't pull any aggro. I think.

My locks pet walked down the stairs instead of jumping and pulled the room in old kingdom like a week ago. I mean I have never seen a pet go into overdrive or jump but I dont play my hunter enough to disagree with you really.

My actual imp is the coolest pet ever because he is glitched and stuck on a loop where he tells me over and over again that we should see other people. Like literally ever 15 seconds. Who was it I confessed to on vent hat I only leveled twice from 60-70? It's true. I was lording it in BG, gearing with honor points and when the spellcasters started to do comparable numbers on me...THATS when I made a trip to the trainer. Consequently my first character ever is not at all ready to PvE or raid in the 70-80 brackets. Like you said, I am a liability. That's fine. I am edumacating. This is my capacity and I will learn it.

And Wowhead and wikki are useless. I'm watching videos.

Knowing your toon, it's abilities and having raid awareness is a million times better than having a high gearscore and not know how to play your toon. When someone realizes that having high dps is nice, but surviving the boss is nicer and might mean not having high dps, that's the person I like to raid with.

Are there supposed to be some major changes right now? Because I tried to make a troll druid and illegal aliens with tamorines started cockblocking and yelled NO TEXMEX FOR YOU MON.

And also org looks the same except for some barriers.

After tuesdays patch thunder bluff citizens would despawn if you tried to rescue them and would not decrease the "citizens to save" counter. Effectively making 2 of the 4 bosses unreachable.

After goofing around in Beta for awhile I think the goblin starter area is a LOT more interesting & fun to quest in than the worgen. Worgens remind me of Borean Tundra quests around the d.e.t.a area.

Goblins you get to ride in cars & the area looks a little more original.
