It made no difference - he just kept on with his script. Should have just hung up the phone when I realized it was a scam call.

Today I got another call, this time with my own information on the caller ID. It was the "lower the interest rate on your credit card" scam. Usually you have to "press 1" to talk to someone, but in this case a guy was already on the line. I took Gelston's advice, said "just a minute", put the phone down, and walked away.

20 minutes later, the guy was still waiting on the line. I came back an hour later, and he had given up after 55 minutes (the phone records the length of each call). These idiots certainly are determined.

It turns out that my call blocking device won't let me block my own number, so that's probably why these clowns are using that technique. I'll have to research the issue.

Aww, the cone of shame! My pup has been working on a spot on her back leg intermittently when she gets stressed, but I haven't ever had success with previous dogs staying in the cone for surgeries, so I hadn't considered it an option.

I don't know if it's standard for cones but, the one I bought from Pet Smart has slits in the plastic near the neck opening. If you loop a string and tie it to the dog's collar it secures the cone. I put a string through three slits and the cone is solid. It doesn't budge and believe me, my dog has tried everything to get it off.

It has the added bonus that you don't need to make the cone tight to the neck. As long as the collar isn't easily slipped off, the cone stays put.

Now we just have to put up with him bashing into our legs with the cone repeatedly. It's almost like he's punishing us.

During my misspent youth, some friends and I would regularly get hammered, trash a large commercial property, and seize their mailbox as a trophy. Eventually, they put an iron rod through the base of the mailbox and filled in the remaining space with cement. Maybe they thought we were swinging on it with a bat or something. We ended up having a Jeril-sized friend rip it straight up out of the ground and drag the whole thing home.

Years later, my mother moved and I had to clean out the basement. There were 13 mailboxes. With a potentially legitimate fear that her neighbors would call the cops if I dragged them all into the woods, I had to load them in my car and visit dumpsters around town. It was kinda like when Andy Dufresne had to get rid of his wall in The Shawshank Redemption.

This all started because one of the commercial property's trucks ran over my basset hound when I was 10. It was then that I swore my vengeance. And, some years later, when I both desired more vengeance and discovered Jack Daniels, I swore my re-vengeance.

An interesting wrinkle in all of this is that Simmons has recently developed a pet irritation to what he terms the "moral majority" of Twitter et al, though how much this was just contrarianism for the sake of constrarianism is anyone's guess. His own Grantland pieces have had comments disabled for a long time, about a month ago comments were disabled throughout the site. Simmons is of course famous for his mailbag pieces where reader comments (that he selects) play a large part, and now it looks like a groundswell of reader support could have a significant impact on this (utterly absurd) suspension. It's an interesting power dynamic, and I wonder if he'll revise his thoughts should the support have tangible results in his favor.

I'd suggest being more specific about why you're proud of what you claim to be proud of. I'm proud that I passed on one grandfather's work ethic, and didn't pass on my other grandfather's alcoholism, that I was able to raise my girls to think for themselves, proud of my career which helped others. If I try to jam all that into "Proud to be Irish/White" it just seems kind of stupid to me. It's far too general to be meaningful.

So, when I hear anyone say proud to be (insert general race/skin tone/heritage) I just kind of chuckle at them and wonder what they're thinking.

I am neither proud, nor ashamed to be white, because I don't identify myself with the billion other white people who live vastly different lives than I do.

Exactly, it's not written on a blank slate. Thus when someone says it, I look for what they're really saying. Pride is a tricky thing to discuss because you don't know if they're just stating it as a reaction to persecution, or if there's something inherent in their behavior that they're proud of. It would be much easier if everyone agreed to use "not ashamed" in the first instance and "proud" in the second.
