Fear, respect and love.
If you make a threat, always go through with it, and make it unpleasant as much as it pains you.
This sounds cold hearted but, kids know how far they can push and will push right up until they think they are getting in trouble. Just don't bend, whatsoever.
I never got spankings from my Father. He absolutely terrified me. He never yelled, but he was very stern. The fear of not knowing what he would do was the best deterant.
On the other hand, my mother spanked the shit out of me (they were divorced). I would misbehave and push the limit every time, because I knew she threatened punishment in exasperation and usually if I would act good for a moment, her anger would subside (sometimes I went over the limit and got the belt, though.), and I could start the whole process anew.
Mileage may vary, I suppose.
Pretty much this.
I love the count down method as well. You'd better move before I hit 1 and if you're not (doing whatever it is they are supposed to be doing) you're standing in the corner. Then it's 10, 9, 7, 4, 2, 1. Sometimes I just say I'm going to count down to "now". They've learned that waiting to move is bad and there's no reason I should ever have to repeat an instruction.
On the opposite side they call guys sir and ladies ma'am because they see/hear me do it. I often call them sir or gentlemen and they understand that's just how you're supposed to talk to people.
Kids are no different than troops, lead by example not by fear. Earn the respect by showing their trust is properly placed, don't demand it without follow thru.

I am NOT afraid to spank my kids. My daughter knows this. And I will go up in front of ANY judge in the good old US of A and tell them why.
Fucking hippy dippy child-rearing is why we have generations of entitled brats running around now. My daughter knows I will put my foot squarely up her ass.

Kids who will ignore/goof off during/enjoy "talking to" sessions like Anticor staring at his kid in the garage are those who don't respect their parents to begin with. Sometimes it's just the kid, but that's pretty rare, IMO. Far more often than not it seems to be parents who don't follow through, who aren't consistent with discipline, who cave in and give the kid their way, etc. Parents who buy into the "every childhood problem can be solved with sweet words and friendly talks" school of thought fall into this category too. The children may love their parents to death, but if Mommy and Daddy are pushovers, the respect necessary for proper discipline won't be there. You don't want your kid to fear you, but you want them to know that you can and will do things they certainly do not like if they misbehave, and that whether or not said things happen is 100% tied to the child's actions.
When I was a kid, my mother had a 4-step process for when I did stuff wrong. The first time, there was no anger whatsoever. She'd sit me down and explain, in a normal, conversational fashion, what I did and why it was bad. The second time I got the explanation again, but she was pissed. The third time I got yelling and threats, and if I did it again, said threats were carried out. I learned not to push Mommy - when she said something, she meant it.

I think that's kind of awesome, but it makes me laugh to realize that with a lot of kids that would NOT work. My sister-in-law's three year old boy is a hellion. He screams, he yells, he does NOT listen. If my sister tells him not to scream, he'll get up and scream right IN HER FACE. It's pretty amazing to see, and I don't know where the bad behavior comes from because they've never been a house to let kids get away with shit. My mother-in-law lives there too, and both she and my sister are all about spanking if it's warranted.
Justin tells me stories about how when he was a kid and was bad, he'd have to go into the backyard and pick his own switch to get spanked with. He once made the mistake of picking the smallest he could find. Once. lol
I could fix them, it's the parents not the kids. If they're only 3 or 4 it's still early enough to correct.

It's also important to have an understanding talk after a punishment. Make sure they really understand the why of the action and reaction.

This. I used to babysit a couple girls who never learned to respect their parents. The father came home from work one night and the older girl (4 years old) asked for a popsicle. He said no, wait until after dinner. She immediately dropped to the floor in a screaming fit, and he started walking toward the fridge. I wasn't even thinking - I looked at her and said, "Ashley, get up. Your father said no." She shut up, stood up, and walked off to watch TV until dinner.
He just stared at me, and I kinda felt like a dick for making him feel bad in front of his kid. Not too much though, since it was his fault. He gave in to fits, I didn't. The first time she threw a screaming fit with me I picked her up, carried her to her bedroom and placed her on the bed, said, "come out when you're done and we'll talk" and shut the door on my way out. The look on her face was priceless.

Blame the parents, not the kids. No follow thru is a great way to make a brat or shit bird out of your kid.
Vote #2 for Supernanny Anticor! and yes... this is so true. You MUST be consistent and you MUST follow through on what you say.
I really like the 'talk' idea in the garage where they have to set their own consquence. I had to do that a few times as a kid and I always made it WAY worse than it needed to be for some reason. haha
Right now my kids are to young to really 'talk' about it, so my 3 year old just gets timeouts and the occasional spanking if she's just completely out of control. But afterward I always talk to her, tell her I love her and let her know that what she did is unacceptable. She has to apoligize to me and mom.
She's sooooo stubborn. I've had her sit on time out and refuse to follow very very simple directions for the better part of an hour, just because she doesn't want to... crazy child. If we weren't consistent with her... it would be a disaster.

Normally I say "So what are we going to do, do you think I need to spank you?" Of course that's a quick No so then I ask "Well what should the punishment be, and I don't know is not an answer (one of my trademark sayings is I don't know is not an answer)?" Their usual reply is no wii for the night, I consider that acceptable for most issues.

I agree with this completely. I also don't spank because I am angry. It's a very last step, but she knows it's an option. I can count the times I have actually had to spank my oldest on one hand.
And then after any punishment we have "the talk", which consists of "Do you understand what you did that was wrong? Do you understand why it was wrong? Do you understand why I had to punish you for it? What we going to do in the future to keep this from happening again?". I get down on her level and look her directly in the eye while we're having this conversation. Then we have hugs and kisses and I explain to her that even though I may not like what she did, I still love her very much. It can be a very long conversation, but I think she is better off for it.

I took my midterm on Tuesday last week. It was 70 questions, 100% of which were scantron. My professor still has not posted our grades, and this exam is 45% of our class grade. Why is it he hasn't been able to take 5 minutes to run the exams (there are only like 30 of us in the class, too!), and then another 20 posting them online? IN A WEEK!?!? fao8iwegaoerngoeainb /anger

Took over a month for my teacher to grade our scantron finals as well. I contacted him and he said there was a "problem" that they were dealing with. Maybe their machine is broken and he doesn't feel like doing it by hand. Either way, they have a due date that must have the grades reported by, so it will get done sooner or later.

Each class building has a scantron machine, and we have probably 8 or 9 class buildings on campus, at least. ZERO EXCUSES!! Honestly, I know it's not the machine being broken or anything, he's just a slow grader. Before registering for his class I saw that one of the big issues people had with him, according to pickaprof, was that he took FOREVER to get grades back. My only real issue is that the exam is such a huge portion of our grade and the withdraw deadline was last week, so even if we got it now and did poorly, it's too late to drop. It would have been considerate of him to get the grades up before the withdraw deadline. Not saying I think I did poorly, but still.

My boyfriend suggested it as diluted for some reason because I asked for a triple. I responded that I'd hardly want to drink PURE poop which I firmly averred is what their coffee is made with.
I feel horrified that I said all that. I sound like some kind of coffeehouse haunter. Should I be wearing a black turtleneck and a beret? I hate turtlenecks. And berets.

Starbucks espresso hardly deserves to be called "espresso", it's so horrible. Try ordering a shot straight up and you'll see what I mean. I love a good espresso, but theirs is the worst I have tried. I assume it's why they dump a gallon of flavored sugary syrup into each and every thing they make - to cover up that crap they call espresso.
And yeah, their regular coffee is pretty bad too.

Why is it that people who drive Jeeps can't drive? I'm not talking the REAL Jeeps, you know, the rag tops that you can take the doors off of... I'm talking the Liberties, Grand Cherokees, Patriots... Every time I get behind one of these stupid people, they wanna go 10 MPH under the speed limit... then they get an attitude when you pass em.... (I was following a Jeep home from work, at 4:30 AM, who wanted to do 30 MPH in a 40... unacceptable.) They're even worse on the highway... I don't think they come with cruise control... I was following one guy who couldn't decide if he wanted to do 60 MPH (in a 65) or 85. I hate retards in Jeeps! All those people should die in a fire.
The patriot has a cvt. If you keep the rpms under 2k you will get about 20% better mileage. Downside: you drive like an old woman.

Yeah, you're right. Someone shouldn't buy a car for interior space, looks, some off-road ability, AND fuel economy. You want fuel economy? Get a Smart Car or Prius!
Nevermind the fact that the Grand Cherokee Overland Summit has one of the most sophisticated 4WD systems ever created, you can't take the doors off, it's not a real Jeep. You know, the kind with the rag top.
Jeep should not be allowed to offer cars that appeal to a wider market. They should focus on gas guzzling REAL jeeps. Rag tops. Doors off. Fuck yeah.

I do own a 2011 Jeep Patriot.
I needed a car that could take me off-road for the amount of camping/hiking I do. I needed a car that had 4WD, skid plates, and enough room to drive around both of my dogs (who are quite larger than Anticor's dogs). I also wanted an American made car. I plan on going back to school full time and didn't feel like having a $450 a month car payment while I was not working. The Wranglers were impractical for my needs AND I now get good gas mileage.
The Patriot is the most off-road capable vehicle in its class. It's in the top 10 for most fuel efficient SUVs. It also get ranked the safest consistently for its class.
What brand of vehicle would you have suggested I buy that also met all those needs?

I don't like the look of the Nitro. It's built on the same chassis as the Liberty. It's essentially the same car with less of a 4WD system. It doesn't get as good mileage.
The 4WD isn't as good on the Nitro as it is in the FDII patriot. The Nitro has less ground clearance. The Nitro does not have skid plates or tow hooks. So yeah, I would end up paying more every month for something that doesn't do what I need.
They made some changes to the outside of the 2011 Patriot. It doesn't look like it used to so much. Plus, I think it's the only Jeep currently being produced that looks the most like the old Cherokee, which is one of my favorite cars.

Yes, I most certainly do. Especially in bad weather... I've driven exactly one car that went better in the snow than my Subaru, and that was my dad's 2003 Jaguar X-Type, with the 3.5 motor. The AWD on that thing was ridiculous.... (4x4 trucks go in the snow, but they don't seem to grip the road like AWD does.) The sticker price on the Jaguar was more than 2x the sticker price of my Subaru, so you get what you pay for. Well, not really, I bought a Subaru, I got more than I paid for. My dad currently has an '08 Infinity G35, which is AWD. My Subaru kicks its ass in the snow... and that fucker was also 2x the cost of my Subaru.
(Oh, and I clicked on Car and Driver, that 1 star rating for the Patriot (albeit, the 2010 model) doesn't have me too sold on the quality of that vehicle.)

You can relax. You didn't buy the Jeep Patriot.
Car and Driver is known to not like CVT engines, since they're louder. The complaints about the 2010, except the CVT, have been changed for the most part. They've added extra sound insulation now, so the noise of the CVT is limited. The 2011 Patriot is considerably different than the 2010. Coming from a car that had a custom exhaust that was loud, I don't notice the noise.
They also say it's "uncomfortable". I'm comfortable in it and I enjoy it. Does it really matter at that point what a reviewer says that I should feel when I'm sitting in it?
My Jeep has AWD with on-demand full time 4WD. It drives fantastic in the snow. This winter in Boston, I had plenty of time to test it out.
Don't worry, Gib. I know you're always ready to e-rage. I like my car and I didn't feel like paying more for a car I didn't want to buy. Given my requirements (which don't need to be put in quotations, because they're actually what I was looking for when I bought it), the Jeep fits my needs. The Subaru and the Nitro were both more and didn't fit my needs.
I'm sorry that someone drove slow in front of you one morning. Something tells me it wasn't the gay Jeep that forced the driver to drive slow, but rather it was the driver's fault. I doubt if they were in a "real Jeep" that they would have been going faster, even if they had a vanity plate and a rag top to prove that they were in a real Jeep. If the doors were off, they still would probably have been driving too slow for you.
Next time you come up you come up on someone on the highway who is driving too slow for you, especially at 4:30 AM with few other people on the road, take a deep breath and pass them.

People who over use the ellipsis, substitute them for periods, and instead of actually using the period to create the ellipsis, they use commas. So it looks like this:

First off I don't appreciate the
disrespect you have toward me, Jessica is my freind get over it. And for your information I am in the military for a reason. I didn't join for myself I joined because I wanted to represent my country and for reason bigger than myself. I've been in for almost 4 yrs buddy and I'm not a fucking kid. I've been deployed twice to the persian gulf and I'm proud to serve my country so don't even dare knock on my service untill you know what's it like to have served. Btw I'm one of the many members of the armed forces that risk our lives everyday just so that ppl like you can voice your disrespect. Oh and for the record I'm not gay far from it. But apparently your obsessed with me so maybe your sexuality is at question yourself.
