Your cat got knocked out for that? How nice.

I was like 13 and had to hold my cat while the doctor ripped out three teeth without numbing anything. I felt bad.

Also, I frown because of work.

Next time go to a vet and not a "doctor" in an alley.

If I'm smoking a cigarette, don't REMIND me that they'll kill me. You think I don't know? No, I don't think I'm invincible, I know they're slowly killing me but IT IS MY FUCKING DECISION TO DO SO. So don't put in your little two cents when you walk past. I try to be polite, I don't exhale when people walk past me, I smoke in the designated areas so stfu.

This. What kind of turd allows a "vet" to remove teeth from their cat without any sort of anesthesia? I realize that turd was probably one of your parents in this case if you were only 13. What a turd.

A vet at the veterinary clinic is not the same as a vet at the local VFW hall.

At no point did you say "Stop. You're hurting my animal."? You didn't think there could possibly be a better way? Oh sure, just pull those teeth out without pain management or anything, I'll hold her down. Imagine if your father said that to your dentist when you went in for a procedure.

Didn't it used to be normal procedure for a vet to perform major surgeries on animals then send them home without any pain meds? I remember taking pets to be spayed and neutered and the vet never offered any meds to manage the pain afterward. Then we just recently had a dog neutered and were therefore caught off guard when the vet offered not only pain medicine but also a sedative for the first few days. We love our animals but we just never thought to question our vet before. He's supposed to know what he's doing after all.

I don't know about all that, as all my cats have been spayed/neutered before I got them. I've also thankfully never had to take an animal in for surgery, other than dentals/tooth extractions. I do know that I wasn't sent home with pain meds for my cat after either extraction surgery - just antibiotics. I also know that there's a difference between pain meds after going home and anesthesia/pain management DURING SURGERY. Your vet didn't ask you to come in and hold your pet down while he was cutting off his balls, right?

At one point, human surgeons were performing limb amputations with little to no understanding of aseptic or even "clean" technique. They did this usually with little more than a gag and some whiskey usually.

Yes, at one point it was normal procedure for a vet to perform major surgeries on animals and send them home without any pain meds. In fact, this still happens with some "old school" vets. Gnome Rage is like 19 or something like that. She was maybe 11 or 12 when this event happened, probably older. In this short period of time, not a tremendous amount has changed in terms of analgesia/anesthesia for clinical vets.

You are the advocate for your own pets. You probably wouldn't have yourself or a family member go in for some procedure, especially one that sounds as painful as having teeth removed while being restrained, without researching what's involved. I wouldn't do that for my pets either.

It's the wind-up phenomenon. With adequate pre-surgical analgesia, you can often get away with little to no post-surgical analgesia. They probably said to contact them if the cat appeared painful.

Well cats hide their pain very well - the more they hurt the more they hide it. I am supposed to call if she stops eating, or if her behavior seems out of the norm. I can tell when she's acting funny, so I know when I would have to call. But she's been eating, cuddly, playful, etc. Back to her normal self except for the hiccuping.

I suggest that at the root, we as a society (or the "little boy", if you will) have made a rule that children are less capable of reasoning and easier to manipulate. Even adults are conditioned to uncritically do what doctors tell them, how much more children? To offer an analogy is not useful if no reasoning is involved at the time.

Sorry. I'm just sensitive about pain management since its kinda my job. Some cats can get bad teeth to the point where they can easily be removed and I'm sure the procedure went well. I just think some degree of pain management is still required for dental extraction. Yeah but I shouldn't have come down on you like it was your fault.

My aunt said when she took her cat in to get it declawed the vet asked if she wanted him to use anesthesia and she said she wasn't going to waste money on a cat for anesthesia. First of all I couldn't believe how much of a bitch someone had to be to say such a thing, secondly I can't believe the vet even asked, that should automatically be included in the price. Thirdly I'm no expert on this so how did the vet even perform the procedure? Strap the cat down and wear ear plugs or what?

Hiccuping turned into coughing and then wheezing. Called the vet and they said it was probably just normal irritation from the breathing tube, and to just monitor her. I should've followed my gut and brought her in anyway, because this evening her breathing got really labored and she was wide-mouthed, practically struggling for air. Had to take her to the expensive emergency vet, and found out she has fucking pneumonia.

I should've asked to speak to my regular vet - the tech I spoke with consulted the other doctor who works in the office. My regular vet is actually really good and I totally trust the cats with him. So it's pretty common? Do they normally recover fully fairly easily? I'm pretty sick over the whole thing, crying like a whiny bitch all night lol.

Yeah, it's pretty common. Just giving your cat a bath at home can do it if you get unlucky and they're already fighting somthing. It just requires a lot of caution, especially if their health is already iffy from other issues. It's usually started by a virus but can worsen easily.

Don't worry, it's completely treatable with more antibiotics (yes, dosing them is SO FUN) if it's the bacteria-related kind which is most common. Just need to be warm, dry and quiet. Plus medicine.

That's good to hear, thank you. Feel a bit better now. I have been fighting with her in order to administer Clavamox since I brought her home Monday night, so more antibiotics won't make a difference. She'll fight with the Clavamox or new stuff, either way haha.

I called the vet just to check up about half an hour ago and he said she's doing well - she's had the bronchodilator and she's still on oxygen. He said her color was really great ever since she arrived, and it was still great so at least we know she's getting lots of oxygen. He'll call if anything happens, but so far she's doing very well.

Sammiches, if done right, are not gross when packed for lunch - even when made the night before. Spaghettios (and related canned goods) require a can opener and a bowl - both easily tossed in a bag the night before. If you're in an office 10-2, chances are good there's a microwave nearby. Leftovers from last night's dinner are great lunches. You can also grab something pre-made from a convenience store on the way in (yes, this does require 5 extra minutes).

It's not mean when you have a better setup than most people get.

Same hours. Different task. We rotate by week. I have to sit in the office IN CASE SOMEONE NEEDS SOMETHING. (which they never do) I see about 3 people a day.

and they go to every building on campus and do random tasks assigned to them. I don't want to be gone for an hour. I want to be able to walk away for five minutes, put something in the oven and then come back, and go upstairs 10 minutes later and get it.

If you want it so bad, just do it. What are they going to do? Fire you?

If they do, you can have a lunch break whenever you want. Hell, you could take a lunch break during your lunch break.

HAHAHAHA I laugh at you saying canned foods require a bowl.

:/ sorry. I kind of feel like I dropped the ball on that. Hope she's alright.

Not your fault. And no, it wasn't pneumonia. The emergency vet was an idiot. Took her to her regular vet as soon as I picked her up from the emergency vet, and she was gasping all morning for air just struggling. The vet believes she had an obstruction of some sort in her bronchi bifurcation, because even with a tube down her throat he couldn't get good flow to her lungs. I had to put her down, and will find out more after he does the autopsy.

I'm about ready to move too because all I do is look around and see her not in any of her spots and I'm pretty much beside myself. :(

Autopsy on a pet though? wtf?

Because in 25 years of being a vet, and a good vet who I will still trust with my other cat, he's never seen anything like that happen from a dental/anesthesia. We both want to know what the fuck happened - whether she aspirated something, inhaled something after the fact, or if it was a complication from the surgery.

Our current family members (pets) should out live me. Macaws live a damn long time and I have to admit it that I am comfortable with this because I grew weary of losing pets.

You do get very very attached to them and it is hard when die. More so when they pass early, our cat at least lived a very long time. That didn't make it any easier of course but at least she didn't die early.

Keep yourself busy so that you don't dwell to much on it is my recommendation, otherwise you'll browbeat yourself too much on this. (hugs)

Thanks everyone, I appreciate it. Heard from the vet, and it turns out that it was just her lungs. They were in such bad shape, they couldn't accept any air. He said it made no sense and he sent biopsies to a pathologist and should know more in a week or two. Could have been something cancerous, or an inflammatory response, who knows. I seriously just don't understand how she could have gone from zero breathing issues and relatively healthy (aside from calicivirus and the associated teeth/gum issues) to this, from a dental. I guess I'll find out in a couple weeks. For now, I think I'll get drunk.

I just got a determination from the state that an employee who filed a few weeks ago was awarded unemployment. He's currently a full time employee, averaging 36-ish hours a week, and has been for several months. Apparently people in MA can collect unemployment and earn a full-time paycheck at the same time. AFK, going to unemployment office so I can file too.

I don't know his particular situation but I believe you can get partial unemployment benefits if you take another job that pays less than your old job or your hours are cutback and you're not making as much before. If he's working an average of 36 hours a week and collecting full unemployment benefits then I need to move to MA too. Although it's hard to pass up my states lax unemployment laws, you can quit your job and still collect.

When I was around 6 or 7 my mother suffered one of her epileptic seizures she would get sometimes. I was asleep at the time and woke up to some strange noise, think we were living in Whittier at time or El Monte I can never recall any how I got up and wandered into the living room to find her on the floor bleeding from the head and having the seizures.

I ran to the phone and dialed the operator, who walked me through what was up and got the emts to the house. So yeah seizures are no fun to witness since you feel rather helpless. Oh and my mother was bleeding from her head because she hit the bookshelf on her way to the floor when the seizures started.

One of my many odd memories from childhood.

They don't know. She'd had at least a couple (that we know of) since the beginning of the year. Her neurological test results were normal and blood work came back normal as well. They gave me the option of just wait and see if she has more or just start her on phenobarbitol now. I picked that option rather than take the chance that the seizures might lengthen and kill her. I'd rather do what I can to keep them from happening in the first place.

Plus, practically every time it happens, she falls down the stairs. One of the vets thinks that maybe stairs trigger her but I think they come on and she tries to get to one of us downstairs. Fortunately, she's a sturdy little pit bull and hasn't been hurt by this but it's only a matter of time.

One funny thing, my chiropractor offered to adjust her after hours even though he can't charge for it in the state of New Jersey, said he'd had some success with epileptic dogs in the past.

So I spoke to the vet today who had the results. It turns out she had a chronic inflammatory response caused by a virus. He said it was basically like walking pneumonia and she had had it a long time. He said because her immune system was already compromised with the calicivirus, an opportunistic bacteria probably got in and caused this. He said that because it was a chronic problem and not a new infection, that's why none of the blood work showed a problem. Apparently her body has been fighting this for a long time and she was able to keep it controlled until the trauma from the surgery/anesthesia... why she never showed a single symptom is beyond me. The doctor said it was not something we could have predicted so I should stop blaming myself, and that it could have possibly caused her demise eventually anyway but there is no way to tell for sure.

Anyway - learned today I get to have a "sit down" with bosses about my "poor performance" in "closing the kitchen"

Evidently another manager (a jackass) told the big boss I left a bag of cheese in the wrong fridge, and my employees made a mess on the floor while cleaning one night while doing extra cleaning and it didnt get cleaned up..

Sadly, I am not sure wtf he talking about with the mess on the floor, because they cleaned a hallway... and it's pretty easy to spot shit when there's nothing in a hallway. But, whateva.

And holy fuck, a bag of cheese, in a cooler we use for OMELETS. (Which, coincidentally, we havent used the omelet station for omelets since may 12th, we've been using it for a pasta station during the summer. Either way, both stations can use the cheese. Fuckhole.)

The nit-picking manager is a guy who says "hey, can you cover the floor while I do (insert XYZ)" and disappears for 2 hours.

But nah, I get the bitching at for stupid shit.

Oh well, I'll sit here and think of a way to redirect it back at them in a good manager fashion to produce positive results... I already got it planned, just need to get it on paper. Bwahaha.

(also, I appreciate the heads up a different manager gave me that it was coming, kudos bro.)

I'm not a parent so I won't pretend to have some knowledge on this subject but I hear this a lot these days, it's 'wrong' to spank a child that is misbehaving but I never hear anyone give any alternatives. So what do parents do when a two year old is behaving and yelling isn't working (which I hear from some people that it is wrong to yell at kids too) and you can't spank them? They aren't really old enough to threaten to take away their video games or anything of that sort.

Depends on the child. My boys stand in the corner at parade rest, spankings are rare but they are an option and my boys know it.

The biggest punishment my boys can get is "a talk" I take them to the garage, sit them down on a folding chair, I sit down on a folding chair and I face to face with them about 5 inches away. Then I just tell them to talk to me and I stare at them. They tell me why they are in trouble, what they should have done, and what they think their punishment should be, I just stare. It's pretty much awesome.

I think that's kind of awesome, but it makes me laugh to realize that with a lot of kids that would NOT work. My sister-in-law's three year old boy is a hellion. He screams, he yells, he does NOT listen. If my sister tells him not to scream, he'll get up and scream right IN HER FACE. It's pretty amazing to see, and I don't know where the bad behavior comes from because they've never been a house to let kids get away with shit. My mother-in-law lives there too, and both she and my sister are all about spanking if it's warranted.

Justin tells me stories about how when he was a kid and was bad, he'd have to go into the backyard and pick his own switch to get spanked with. He once made the mistake of picking the smallest he could find. Once. lol

Your kids sound well behaved though. I'm not trying to be a smart ass but I just can't see the talk working with my niece and nephew when they were that age. If their dad sat them down and stared in their face they would probably just laugh, stand up and start misbehaving again. Their parents also tried the standing in a corner bit but if they even listened and stood in the corner (that's a big if right there) they would stand there for maybe 10 seconds and just go right back to what they were doing.

Then again maybe my niece and nephew are bad examples, nothing worked on those two. In fact nothing still works on them and they are teenagers now.

Fear, respect and love.

If you make a threat, always go through with it, and make it unpleasant as much as it pains you.

This sounds cold hearted but, kids know how far they can push and will push right up until they think they are getting in trouble. Just don't bend, whatsoever.

I never got spankings from my Father. He absolutely terrified me. He never yelled, but he was very stern. The fear of not knowing what he would do was the best deterant.

On the other hand, my mother spanked the shit out of me (they were divorced). I would misbehave and push the limit every time, because I knew she threatened punishment in exasperation and usually if I would act good for a moment, her anger would subside (sometimes I went over the limit and got the belt, though.), and I could start the whole process anew.

Mileage may vary, I suppose.

Blame the parents, not the kids. No follow thru is a great way to make a brat or shit bird out of your kid.
