I'm starting to run low on my list, so I'm looking for recommendations for good movies to watch. Meantime, I figured I'd also start a list of good movies that are out there.

Doesn't have to be one made recently, and it doesn't have to be art house intellectual. Just something good and entertaining.

I'll start off with National Treasure: Book of Secrets. A fun movie that touches on American history, enough to tease but not lecture.

So, what have you seen lately?

Hated the characters, hated the story, hated the ending most of all.

I saw The Happening, and despite the shit reviews, I really liked it. It was a little cheese plot-wise but I still liked it a lot overall.

I also rented The Flock from Blockbuster a couple weeks ago, thinking "Ooh, Richard Gere and Claire Danes and a bunch of sex offenders, gotta be good right? Why wasn't this in the movies?" DO NOT RENT. That fucking movie sucked so hardcore, omg, SO HARDCORE. How they got two fairly A-list actors to make that piece of shit is beyond me.

A few I have seen lately that I liked...

Kite Runner - Writer living in California goes back to his home in Afghanistan to help his old childhood friend.

I'm not There - Bob Dylan.

Control - Story of Ian Curtis

Darjeeling Limited - Three American Brothers go for a Train ride Across India

Juno - Story of a pregnant teen

La Vie en Rose - Edith Piaf

Paris, je t'aime - small love stories about Paris

Fay Grim ( If you can get the first part, it makes it even better "Henry Fool")

Hope any of those work might peek your interest. Let me know what you think if you see any of them.

Sling Blade

The Virgin Suicides
The Man Without a Face

We had a drive-in pretty close to here, but it closed not long ago. Never got to try it.

Adding to the list: both Narnia movies. Loved the books, and the movies are pretty derned good, too. Only thing that really got on my nerves was Caspian and Susan at the end of Prince Caspian. That just felt forced.

Just saw another movie that I'd highly recommend. It's called Tsotsi, and it's out of South Africa. Won the 2005 Oscar for best foreign film, and very well deserved. It's based off of a novel by South African playwright Athol Fugard, about a violent boy from the slums of Johannesburg finding a baby in the back seat of a car he steals, and what happens to him after.

I was thoroughly transfixed. It's violent, it's brutal, it's wicked, but it's a great movie. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story. It takes a lot for me to cry at a movie, and this did it so easily.

Saw Young at Heart on the plane and was really touched. It's a documentary about senior citizens who perform rock classics and contemporary music in general. From various divorces, deaths and remarriages I have 7 grandparents and three have died in the last year, four if you count my grandmother who was rescusitated, I wish they all could have maintained the same spirit as the people in the chorus.

Saw Burn After Reading tonight.

As a long time Cohen Brothers fan I'd say this was good. Not to the level of some of their past films, but pretty good. In all, the way the story weaved and wrapped up was the most entertaining part for me. I felt the characters lacked some depth and that some of the humor was a little cheap.

Still, having said all that, it was worth the price of admission.

PS. On a PC tonight so forgive my lack of spelling and using inch and foot marks.

If you liked The Departed, and enjoy foreign films... try "Infernal Affairs". It's the movie that The Departed was wholly based off of.

I really enjoyed The Number 23, with Jim Carrey (my internet is wonky tonight, so I can't look up the spelling) in a serious role.

I also really liked Stranger than Fiction. It's the only Will Ferrell movie that I even came near to not wanting to punch him in. It went back to his subtle roots where he was actually funny. Like his 'more cowbell' days. Incredible, if you're into a movie that's deserving of the word 'literature'.

A random addition to the list:
I really really liked Earthsea. It's a really traditional fantasy story, but the world is well-crafted. Doesn't really follow canon, if you're into that. Has Kristin Kreuk (Lana from Smallville) in it. Liked it for the 'entertaining fantasy' aspect.

Sure there is. Maybe his girlfriend really wants to see it and is begging him to go. He says he'll do it if she does something for him in-turn (Sex). Just when they are about to go see the movie it gets cancled due to a freak power outage, and she works tomorrow so you can't see it then. Thus he really wants to go watch the movie so he can get fucked. There in lies the reason justifying his want to see the movie.

You never know...

Also, the girls in that movie are hot.

Admitedly, the movie can be slow at times. What I liked about it is how it made me feel about the two main characters at any given time. I went from sympathizing with Jesse James and hating Ford to vice versa and back again. As the title pretty much states, the movie is solely about these two people and the story told tends to be very character driven rather than action driven. If you want a good old-style western, this isn't the film for you. It's more of a historical-documentary (well, by the writer's history anyway, I'm not trying to start a debate on this movie and it's true historical relevance) with well-paid actors.

Righteous Kill and The Lookout are both worth watching, imo.

IMO, righteous kill was a huge waste of both deniro and pacino. The script was poorly written and boring, and everything about it was cliché. And the surprise ending (no spoilers here) was laughably forced. I dunno. I was just hoping for something from the hey-day of both actors. But I guess that's what you get when you set your expectations so high.

The Lookout...meh. I thought the ending sucked, but it built a pretty decent storyline.

It's a b-movie, plot-wise, from start to finish, but once I stopped caring about the plot as much I found myself enjoying the acting, which was well done - with good synergy, IMO.

The lookout did have a decent plot although I felt it was less about the bank robbery (major part of the plot) and more about Chris's struggle with psychological problems. Bonus points for depicting what people with head injuries actually deal with during recovery.

The lookout was good. Righteous Kill was just a check.

Right up there with From Dusk Til Dawn, True Romance and Dawn of the Dead (2004).

WTF is that thing replacing her leg?? It looks like a combination vacuum attachment/sprinkler head/rocket launcher, with a knife stuck on the end.

I enjoyed Taken. For an old man Liam Neeson can really kick some ass.

Valkryie was interesting. It's only weakness was a hugely predictable ending. Nicely performed and put together. I never knew how close they actually came.

Untergang was better, however, and comes highly recommended.

Just rented:

Wanted
Hellboy 2
Tropic Thunder
Pineapple Express

All worth watching! Tropic Thunder was far funnier than I thought it would be.

I still have Max payne to watch.

I didn't bother with the first one, but I actually really liked the second one. Plus, even in all that weird makeup, Luke Goss is sexy as shit.

Was Pineapple Express any good?

As I already said in this thread, I bruised a rib laughing. It's really stupid comedy, but it made me laugh.

I watched 'Choke' today -- it was amusing, but I probably wouldn't watch it again. I always like Sam Rockwell, though.

I agree with StrayRogue too, the Nazis should have lost... dude, wait... what?

Gladiator & Braveheart are tied as my 2 best movies of all time.

Also Highlander won an Academy Award for the best movie ever made.

Yeah, Gladiator and Bravehard are absolutely amazing. Pineapple Express was freaking hilarious too. As far as movies in the theater, I went and saw the new Underworld and Taken. Both movies were excellent! Liam Neeson did a phenomenal job in Taken and Underworld was a very powerful love story. The chemistry between Lucian and Sonja was great. It was cool to watch the Lycans rise to power too.
