Cabin in the Woods. Very creative take on your classic horror movie. Definitely some new twists... and about as much gore as I've ever seen in a movie. Some good humor too.

Agreed on Cabin in the Woods. Normally, I don't watch scary movies because I startle extremely easily. Joss Whedon and the group of friends going convinced me to give this one a try and I was very glad I did. Yes, it gets quite graphic on occasion, but the story was fantastic. Elevator bell dings will never be the same.

Attack The Block

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cD0gm7dHKKc

From the producers of SHAUN OF THE DEAD and SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD comes ATTACK THE BLOCK, a fast funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing estate into a sci-fi playground. A tower block into a fortress under siege. And teenage street kids into heroes. It's inner city versus outer space.
Original score composed by Basement Jaxx is awesome too;

Forgot this came out and you guys reminded me. Pretty damn good! Not all pretty like the big budget swirling silk flying masters kind of movies, which I do enjoy, but more dirty and bloody and human. The set up takes a little while but the payoff is worth it.

I think what was most interesting is the portrayal of the main antagonist and the outcome. Not what I have come to expect from movies of this genre.

SPOILERS

The cruelty the villain displayed had me convinced that he was tremendously evil but I did not expect it to end the way it did. Thinking back on it he was portrayed in the set up as showing some difficulty doing something that someone who was actually good at it would have done in one swipe. All the targets of his aggression may as well have been defenseless target dummies.

The movie also had some science subplot so if you like geek talk injected into your blockbusters, there's that. Classic ending of a boat sailing away into paradise, whoohoo.

I really enjoyed the artistic way in which this film was put together. It's a suspenseful drama with just a hint of horror, if only for the gore. Clearly this is a foreign film and you'll see why if you watch the unedited version. There is a little bit of penetration shown during the beautifully shot opening sequence of a slow mo love scene set to classical music. The two main characters (that never get named in the film) are played by Willam Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg. By the end of the movie you will have witnessed graphic mutilation and yet somehow it is still a stunningly well crafted and beautiful film that somehow seems to convey a positive message despite the brutality of the story. Certainly the most thought provoking film I've seen in a couple of years and I highly recommend you watch it, if you can get past the things you can't unsee, and believe me... you can't unsee them.

Sucker Punch was rediculously bad. The idea that you are calling it a great movie is mind boggling to me. And while the new Dredd was bad, it wasn't nearly as bad as Sucker Punch. The only good parts about the new Dredd were the villianess, who was pretty good, and the use of super-slo-mo. That was very effective. Unfortunately the premise of the story was so shallow that it allowed virtually no room for character development or actual story.

On the other hand, Looper was pretty great.

Melancholia - SUCKED. Too long, way too drawn out. I couldn't wait for the planet to finally hit earth. The only saving grace was that Kirsten Dunst was topless twice.

Melancholia stuck in my mind more than Hunger Games. But I can seriously tolerate slow films and have a taste for them, especially in the mind-bending and/or life's-a-bitch genre

Skyfall. Twice. Because my boyfriend is obssessed with James Bond, spy novels, etc. I did very well not to emasculate his favorite superhero by pointing out that the wind sheer between two shanghai skyscrapers would obfuscate any prior measurements needed for sniping the dude. BUT IT WAS A REALLY PRETTY SCENE THO(trademark Jarvan).

There were some technical inconsistancies, but all in all it was still an excellent movie. For example, the room they use for the uber-bad guy's cell, that just happens to have under ground tunnels leaving it. Apparently checking under the grating isn't considered a good idea when you've already sprung for armed guards and a fancy glass room. Never mind even explaining how he overpowered the guards and got out of the room.

Skyfall
I liked Javier Bardem's intro scene and rat monologueThis scene was unbelievable. It came a long way into the movie, after everyone had finished their popcorn and was wondering where the heck Javier Bardem was, and he could literally have walked out of the movie as soon as the scene was over and he would have earned his money.

I read once that Shakespeare designed his soliloquys around specific actors, this felt like a perfect example of that. Or the cinematic equivalent of throwing the ball at the rim and having Javier Bardem go get it, and him finishing so powerfully that the other team just forfeits and gives him a standing ovation for the rest of the game, and women in the first three rows get pregnant (and already-pregnant women have twins).

What was even more amazing was that after we are equal parts admiration for his acting ability and vague apprehension for his character's diabolical machinations, in the very next scene he is unrelentingly, gut churningly evil. No more marionetteer, no longer the indifferent mastermind, but a brutal psychopath, effortlessly penetrating Bond's armor of cynicism. (It was only slightly undermined by the inanity of MI6 showing up not 15 seconds after the woman was killed. Prostitute/slave, used as bait for murders, ambushed in the shower by a naked Bond because that wouldn't be traumatic at all, used as a pawn in horrific psychological warfare, and not quite saved in the nick of time. Depressing.)

With the whole set-up and the significant time devoted to M's inquisition and auld Scotland, Bardem was in what, a quarter of the movie? And he dominated. Much more impressive than his No Country performance, which was pretty impressive in its own right.

After Skyfall I did watch Dr. No. That movie is endlessly fascinating. By some trick of the universe I went on to watch Enter The Dragon with Bruce Lee after Dr. No. The Villians are the same! I concur. This sequel did a disservice to the original. So much poor writing in this movie. He allows his family to come to this dangerous country when he's an uber paranoid security guy? His daughter can't drive but drives pretty fucking awesome in a long chase? I can't remember the rest of the objections I had to the story but suffice to say that it was largely laughable, aside from the action which is supposed to be over the top. I still like Liam but I hope this writer gets gang raped.

First, Iran said it would produce its own cinematic response to "Argo." Now, Tehran plans to sue Hollywood filmmakers who contribute to the production of such "anti-Iran" propaganda films.

"The Iranophobic American movie attempts to describe Iranians as overemotional, irrational, insane, and diabolical while at the same, the CIA agents are represented as heroically patriotic," it complained.

Monsters University was fun, and funny. Didn't end how I expected, but it was good nonetheless. I haven't seen Monsters Inc and I didn't think I missed anything aside from one extremely minor thing.

Lone Ranger was so chock full of absurdities and anachronisms that it made my brain twitch. It took me a while to build up the suspension of disbelief, but once I allowed myself to go with it, it was enjoyable.

Now You See Me was visually slick, and the ending caught me unaware, but it never really grabbed me or got me involved with the plot.

Overall, I paid $3 to see 3 movies, the first two of which were worth it.

Agreed on Man of Steel, saw it despite the bad reviews and while I can't pinpoint exactly what it was I just didn't enjoy it. Think it was just too long.

However I saw The Heat last night and I have never laughed so hard at a movie in my life. Everyone in the theater was crying they were laughing so hard.

Not a movie but I just started rewatching Star Trek: Enterprise the TV series. It's pretty great! I forgot how Bush years vibey it is though. And gotta love the intro. "ITS BEEN A LOOOOONG TIIIIME....."

We watched all of these this year with my twelve year old thanks to roku/amazon prime. He hated the intro and would leap across the room to hit the mute button. He did enjoy the opening credits/music on the alternate universe episode.

there's a buncha really good movies on netflix atm

fore some gore: Tucker & Dale vs Evil on netflix...although Pereus didn't seem to appreciate it , totally not what I expected/funny movie
also Cabin in the Woods was surprisingly freakin awesome...

The Man from Earth (older movie, really interesting...entire movie takes place in one room),

and for some foreign films: Timecrimes was good, and Point Blank, really good action

also Headhunters (scandinavian thriller) & Painted Skin: The Resurrection (awesome visuals)

Saw Superman and Lone Ranger in the last week.

Both actually better than I thought they would be. Story wise Superman was stronger. Both were decent action flicks for the summer. No masterpieces by any stretch, but enjoyable enough to watch at least once.

Also saw the magic/illusion movie Now you see me. I enjoyed that as a chance of pace movie this summer. Some of the stunts were obviously unrealistic and hokey, but overall it had a couple aha moments to it.

I'm getting married in September and we've been engaged for a while, i refuse to say fiancée. I call her my wife. I feel like a douche saying fiancé.

Silver linings playbook wasn't bad until the end. Got kinda dumb with the bet and all. I liked it though. Solid permoances by cooper and Lawrence. She was smoking hot in the entirety of the movie.

I felt connected to the character when he threw A Farewell To Arms out the window. I can't remember if I read that in college or high school, but I remember feeling the exact same way when I read the ending. Fucking Hemingway...

Her vowels are really incomparable, but I still prefer Knots (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYdPtcx-4mo) (obviously). I have often thought that singer-songwriters can be hard to fan because their understanding of the songs they play with one guitar and one voice includes so much more that we the lesser cannot hear, but still, Braille is a little horny.

My boyfriend not only agreed to but wanted to watch my favorite movie ever last night, Magnolia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0175880/). It's a deep character study of some pretty emotionally fucked up people, right up my alley, and the director Paul Thomas Anderson is a fucking genius imho. I absolutely hate Tom Cruise but he is undeniably amazing in this very well-suited role, and Juliette Moore...well, she is mindblowing always. BF not only survived but even LIKED IT. Keeper.

Great scenes/video from the movie (the soundtrack by Aimee Mann is equally awesome, btw):

Was looking for a good scary movie the other day, and ended up renting on demand a B rated film called VHS. I didn't expect much at all, but the preview was enough to get me to buy. It's based on the found homemade film thing and was composed of about 5 short stories. I really enjoyed it...so much so that I saw the sequel, VHS2, which was surprisingly even better.

If you want a good horror flick, VHS is a solid choice.

Enders Game. 4 of 5 stars. I'm almost always cranky when I leave the theater after watching a director gut the heart and soul out of a book I enjoyed (ie. The Hobbit.) Not so this time, it was remarkably true to the book.
