Donnie Darko - Finally got around to seeing this movie. Was actually pretty decent.

Shallow Hal - I don't know why I like this movie. Its one of the few Jack Black movies I like...

Bill and I are starting a Disney kick. We plan on watching all of the animated Disney movies over the course of the next couple of months. I really loved them when I was younger and its something different to add into the mix of watching something every other night.

Did you hear they're making a live action "Little Mermaid?" W..T..F...

Very. A half hour into it I was squirming at how depressing and uncomfortable the situation was. The acting and scenery were so impressive though that it was worth watching. And my man Guy Pearce was in it! Bonus!

Does that mean you didn't like Book of Eli either?

I mean, do you actually listen to dialog and follow the plot, or do you have it on mute and look at the desolate scenery? Honestly I have no idea how they can be confused in any way other than being post-apocalyptic.

I don't think she took it personally. I think we're all just a little confused why you could compare the two, since they're pretty much nothing alike.

The Road is depressing, dark and post-apocalyptic. Children of Men is vaguely the same.

You know why I don't like either Children of Men or The Road? Because I've seen Sophie's Choice. God, that was depressing and dark.

I thought they were. For me it's akin to comparing horror movies.

Children of Men: Clive Owen takes a pregnant girl to safety through a distopian, post-apocalyptic world.

The Road: Viggo Mortensen takes his son to safety through a distopian, post-apocalytpic world.

Watched Departures at my friends tonight and loved it. It's a Japanese film that portrays grief and bereavement (as seen through the eyes of the men hired to take care of the deceased) in an unexpectedly life affirming, gentle, and sometimes humorous way. I was totally absorbed. I'd never even heard of the movie so I had no preconceived idea of what to expect. Maybe more Hollywood movies would seem better if there wasn't so much hype surrounding their release.

It doesn't hurt that the lead actor, Masahiro Motoki, is yummy in it either.

Book of Eli.
Book of Eli was excellent, as well. I need to see it a second time, for obvious (if you've seen it!) reasons.Spoilers!

Like you, I'm sure, I immediately tried to think of any place they could have put tells in. One I remembered right away was when he and Mila are walking up to the cannibal house, he kicks the first stair and Mila glances at him, THEN he goes up. This unfortunately also made me remember how he and Mila were looking down at the house from a hill or rise from fairly far away: how could he have known there was a house there? Was he just relaxing and waiting for Mila to comment so he could pretend he saw something, too? That made me sad, but I also remembered how in the second and third scenes he feels around the skeleton's and corpse's feet looking for shoes, as opposed to just looking.

Directing Gary Oldman in the discovery scene must have been the easiest thing ever: "remember that scene you did in Fifth Element where the stones weren't in the case you stole from the cruise ship? Ok... do it again."

I recently saw The Last Airbender which was the best movie I have seen in a long time. I loved it in the same way I loved The Fifth Element the first time I saw it. Time will tell if I can watch it a hundred times and still love it!

Saw the new Adam Sandler. Was suprisingly funny. He must have gotten a real director for this one. Would watch again.

I saw that last night and I didn't think that it was amazing. I'd have enjoyed it more if there wasn't so much hype about it. It really didn't live up to it. Though, I did like how they portrayed the average intelligence level of the common person in that era.

If you count an 11 episode anime as a movie, Eden of the East is awesome. I was over at a party earlier tonight and we watched the first episode from Amazon and then proceeded to watch the entire thing. Here's the trailer:

The dub is better than the sub in this case as well. I only wish the song they used for the initial credits was used for all the episodes:

Spent a lot of time the last two weeks catching up on movies:

A-team - Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thought it felt a lot like the show to me, with a bigger special effects budget. Really enjoyed the origin story. I wasn't disappointed by any of the castings and thought each played their role quite well. I was mildly upset at the loss of the van, though.

Knight & Day - Fun movie. Not spectacular, but fun in how it almost made fun of itself. I just got the impression that it was written to be unbelievable and they merely had fun making it so. Wasn't a waste of money or time. However, it was not the best performances by either actor.

Salt - Where Knight & Day seemed to be making fun of the genre, this was more serious. Was a lot like several other spy slicks, but remained different enough to enjoy. I liked it. Not outstanding, but I'd watch it again. I wouldn't bother to do so with Knight & Day.

OSS 117: Cairo Nest of Spies - OMFG. The only reason not to enjoy this movie is because you don't like subtitles. It was great. Somewhat stupid, sure, but came off as VERY Pink Panther-like. The actor was hilarious and awesome. I don't know if this is some sort of serial movie or movie-channel series, but it's great. The main character is an idiot of a spy. I didn't even catch the entire movie from the beginning but didn't matter. One scene the guy gets woken up pre-dawn by a muezzin, yells for him to shut up then goes and beats him up with the megaphones still on. He insults Islam constantly, has barely an original thought and still saves the day repeatedly. Highly recommend seeing this.

She gets down on her floor for like five seconds with that girl she gives the apartment to. Who was supposed to be like a really fit boxer from the books but was thankfully transmuted into a breasty kimono-lesbian for the movie. It was good too because movie-Lisbeth is already pretty Y-chromosomed and the movie couldn't handle having a horribly pock-marked Mikael Blomkvist AND a two-dude lesbian scene. As it is those movies are lacking even one properly cast attractive person and seriously have me doubting the "lots of hot girls in Sweden" stereotype and definitely have me believing the "more Swedish people kill themselves because they have horrible acne than anywhere in the world" headlines I read in the paper a few times a year.

Clash of the Titans (2010) - Being a fan of the original I liked this one. Who needs depth when you have giant scorpions, gods and hot godesses and magic weapons and armor!

The Town - Ok ok, not bad. I’m not from Boston so whatever but it did have a good twist with the bank manager. Don’t think I’ve ever seen that before in the bank robbing film genre. Still, I don’t think Aflack’s charcter is a hero... he shot at and stole from the good guys.

I just can't quite follow you there. The series was fantastic tv. Great family experience over one holiday when we marathoned it as a group. The movie? Anything that makes one little cousin cry about how bad it is has kind of failed...given how she felt about the show she should've been a huge fan.

Well I guess we just disagree. I thought Ang was well cast. I forget the names of the water tribe bro/sis combo but they were probably the weakest casted IMO. The fire prince and uncle were done well, even though the prince had a full head of hair. General Zhao played by Asaff was cool but kinda weak.

Road to Perdition, Ghost World, Uzumaki, the Lone Wolf and Cub movies, 300, The Dark Knight, The Crow, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Sin City, hell, even the first Transformers flick do a better job of taking their origins further without arbitrary sacrifices. The tacked on 3D made it worse. Mediums need to be utilized rather than covered.

Okay, I gave up on quoting all the relevant posts, because it all boils down to this:

Back...you are thirty-one flavors of stupid, and your opinion on movies no longer has any credibility whatsoever.

They mispronounced half of the main character's NAMES, for heaven's sake. The martial art aspect of bending was ridiculously and inaccurately overplayed. Earthbenders should not be stomping around for 5-10 seconds before every instance. The acting was weak for all three of the kids, and while Dev Patel made an admirable attempt to salvage a terrible character adaptation, the script just didn't give him enough to work with.

Ironically, Aasif Mandvi was easily one of the better parts of the film. I was at least entertained when he was on screen.

They GUTTED the television series. End of story.

Transformers? No fucking way.

I was heartbroken by the Transformers movies, but even the second one was better than TLA. There was no way in which the movie didn't fail.

Edit: I forgot what was possibly the heart of all the terrible problems plaguing this movie: Shamalama decided to take what was a light-hearted and humorous show overlaying a serious, dramatic, well-told story, and removed all the humor and light-heartedness. Huge, unforgivable mistake.

Back...you are thirty-one flavors of stupid, and your opinion on movies no longer has any credibility whatsoever.

I am willing and able to accept that as truth. We may not see movies the same way. Re-read my opinion in this thread on the Last Airbender and maybe we can come to terms.

Lumi you are one hardcore movie dude.

Blockbuster movies are entertainment, not art. Success = number of tickets sold = number of schmucks entertained on a Saturday night. Success =/= correctness in relation to original tv series/book/lecture/idea. So while disagreeing with someone for being entertained by a successful movie is principaly commendable calling them an idiot for appreciating a common form of entertainment in general is.....perplexing.

That said I generally check with the scary online critics before I see anything sooooo I will probably be going to see The Green Hornet next week, hahaha.

Ultramarines. CGI was a bit meh in some areas, and the storyline wasn't all that epic, but overall I found it enjoyable.

I've watched it twice now myself, and I love it. I'm hoping they make some more.

Caught The Other Guys and Machete last week. Both great movies. I thought The Other Guys would be lame as hell, but I was laughing my ass off. Now I know what a soup kitchen really is.

I thought it was fantastic. It seemed lovely, imaginative and unique. Wiki and my shame for quoting Wiki to follow. Seems it did not do badly.

"On its opening day in the United States, The Last Airbender made $16 million, ranking fifth overall for Thursday openings.[72] For its opening three-day, Fourth of July weekend, The Last Airbender accumulated a total of $40.3 million. The following Monday, it grossed another $11.5 million, and the following Tuesday it grossed $17.5 million. 54% of its total gross was from 3D presentations at 1,606 screens.[73]

Opening overseas in 923 sites, the film grossed an estimated $9 million, $8 million of which was from 870 sites in Russia, making it the number one film there.[74] The film grossed $9.4 million from its second weekend in overseas markets.[75]

As of November 21, 2010, The Last Airbender had grossed $131,601,062 in the United States box office. It had also grossed $187,340,196 in other countries, making for a total of $318,941,258 worldwide.[3]

The film is the 16th highest grossing film of 2010. [76]"

Because we all know it's been way way too long since the last "aliens kill us all" movie:

http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi3180108569/

Although notice these subtle (yet still obvious) positives:

1. Hoyt from True Blood seems to be in this film, along with Michelle Rodriguez, who every man can only dream of being slapped by

2. The artistry of this preview is apparent in its robo-vocal "sad" song in the second half

3. ofmg those explosions look really fast and that one army guy had a hot wife and joining the army seems like a cool idea

In an attempt to relieve my boredom whilst belaboring the point, I present you with the following:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/average
a : being about midway between extremes <a man of average height>

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/above

2a : in or to a higher place
3: in or to a higher rank or number

Following this train of reasoning:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/better
comparative of good
3: more attractive, favorable, or commendable

which leads me to this:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/good
c (1) : agreeable, pleasant <had a good time>
1:f (1) : adequate, satisfactory <good care> —often used in faint praise

which leads me to once more point out that Red was this:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mediocre

which apparently means-
: of moderate or low quality, value, ability, or performance : ordinary, so-so.

Who knew?

Now, while merriam webster is not necessarily the definitive source for words in the english language, I think it is good enough for my purpose here, which is to educate you so very thoroughly that I am 127,000% correct.

I hope this clears up any misconceptions you may have about the level of quality Red possesses.

Gelston
01-29-2011, 07:10 AM
Well, seeing as it equated mediocre to ordinary, I'll consider that to be average. So being better than mediocre would be above average.

Also, thesaurus ftw...

mediocre
Parts of Speech:*adjective
Definition:*average, commonplace

Note that it is my opinion that this film is above average. Of course, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and they all stink.

Green Hornet was a very pleasant surprise. I was expecting comic book style garbage, but it turned out to be quality.

To paraphrase a movie critic whose name I can't remember at the moment, it was no Iron Man, but it was hella better than Iron Man 2.

Also, Season of the Witch was an entertaining movie-going experience, provided you arrive drunk or with the necessary provisions to become drunk during the film, and that you view it with every intention of mocking the fuck out of it. While it bears no cinematic similarities to Snakes on a Plane, the experience of watching it in the theatre reminded me of that (non-stop mockery and laughter, which can't be all bad, right?).

I'm excited for the next couple of months, lots of (hopefully) good stuff coming. Holy shit Sucker Punch (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0978764/)!
