New trailer for Oldboy. Be warned, it probably contains spoilers for at least the first half hour of the movie. It looks pretty tremendous, so I advise not clicking on it and just seeing it. Josh Brolin, Sam Jackson. Have I ever steered you wrong?

Enders Game. 4 of 5 stars. I'm almost always cranky when I leave the theater after watching a director gut the heart and soul out of a book I enjoyed (ie. The Hobbit.) Not so this time, it was remarkably true to the book.
I haven't seen it yet but I heard from a usually reliable source that they really gutted the book by softening the characters and eliminating or cushioning a lot of the hardships and challenges that make Ender who he is. And they almost entirely eliminated his brother and sister as important characters? I'll still see it though but my expectations are not as high as I hoped.

I think 'really gutted the book' is not a fair assessment. The movie has only 2 hours to tell the story. They chose to focus on the school and the bugger war. Peter and Valentine are dramatically reduced roles (Peter is just a one scene Bully). I still think the movie succeeds in posing the same questions as the book. 3.5 stars, but no hope that this team can make Speaker for the Dead.
Look on the bright side - the movie could have been turned into an adolescent love story.

Well, yes and no. I did come out of the cinema thinking it was really short. The Peter/Valentine taking over world opinion through the internet forums (insert chortle) would hardly have been compelling cinema. There was one scene near the end that I thought they wimped out on a bit, but overall, I thought it was a pretty decent adaptation. I suppose the movie didn't explore all the subtleties of that the book did, but at least it didn't contradict the overall themes.

I watched Omega Man and I Am Legend back to back the other night. Fun to see the stark changes in pretty much everything since the 70's.
I think Charlton Heston was the better leading man, but it's hard to compete with an additional 35 years of film technology improvements and a savvy public's demand for better story telling.
I Am Legend gets the win, but only barely, and watching them both is even better.

I actually saw a movie in the theater today. Anyone who has any affinity for the movie "Mary Poppins" should see "Saving Mr. Banks" at some point. It isn't one of those movies that HAS to be seen in the theater, but it really should be seen. It's a wonderful reminder of how awesome Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson are.

Two great choices.
I went and saw 47 Ronin last night. It exceeded our expectations, though our expectations were low. The pace was good and the filming was nice. The special affects and stunts were pretty good, and they didn't over-play the fantastical and ruin any sense of suspension of disbelief. I give it a 5 out of 10. Maybe 6.5 only because I like fantasy films.

Can't go wrong with Hitchcock, in my opinion. North by Northwest is on my short list of favorite movies of all time.
To tack my own onto the list, Frozen was very good. Loved that the story was mostly about the two sisters and the guys were more supporting characters.

1. The old radio that conveniently goes in and out of range as the story dictates.
Possibly explainable by Dennis Quaid's madness though.
2. The pack hunter society couldn't possibly be sustainable with just human(/humanoid) prey.
Definitely explainable by other sources of food, but they could have devoted one of the scenes spent on slightly repetitive chases to making it clear.

Sabrina (1954) and Fiddler on the Roof. Sabrina is the only movie I can ever remember watching where there are literally no villains, and it is still enormously engrossing. Fiddler on the Roof is an incredible downer: who would have guessed that's how a movie about Jews in Europe would end up? It's leavened with some fun and a little hope, but overall bring the Kleenex.

Why the fuck doesn't the advanced search feature list this thread when you use the search function for titles to include the word "movie"? Fucking annoying.
Anyway, just watched Captain Phillips and really enjoyed it. I've avoided watching it until now because I figured I knew what it was about, and how it ended already, having watched the actual ordeal play out on TV. The suspense was top notch throughout but, for me, the toughest part to watch was at the end when he was safely aboard the Navy vessel and undergoing the medical exam. Very hard watching a strong person in shock like that. Hard to believe he went back to sea after that. Anyway, great movie.

The Unknown Known
Much more even handed than the trailer predicted. Rummey did a good job representing himself. I'm left with the impression that he's painstaking in his attempts to make the right decision and that once a decision is made he's liberated from ever thinking about it again. A few of his recollections were shown to be opposite of reality but it wasn't an attack piece.
The one quote that stuck out the most was that George H.W. Bush did not recommend Rummey to his son. Don even intimated that Bush 41 was against the decision. W's Dad was a great President and is a great man. I wish his son would have listened to him.

It got awful reviews but I found myself enjoying 47 Ronin. There was a lot wrong with the film, most notably the miscasting and (non)acting of Keanu Reeves. It's based on an entirely Japanese true story, so why the producers felt it necessary to cast a white man in the lead role is a mystery (and probably why it did so poorly in Japan despite the ensemble cast of popular Japanese actors used.) It just detracts from the story I think. There were a bunch of mystical and magical elements that were visually interesting (especially the dragon fight sequence) and I enjoyed the storming of the castle a lot but yeah, I do wish they had been more faithful to the actual events the movie is based on.

I liked 47 Ronin, and thought his role fit Keanu's "style" of acting pretty well. There are already a lot of faithful versions of this story on film, though I haven't seen them, so I thought the exaggerated elements weren't so out of place.
On a similar note, Man of Tai Chi (www.imdb.com/title/tt2016940). I enjoyed it, really good fights/choreography, and again I thought his role suited Keanu more so than 47 Ronin or most of his other near-emotionless performances. Some of the stuff at the end seemed a little strange but reading about the movie there are some reasonable theories concerning yin and yang, etc. Would recommend watching.

I don't really know anything about Tatum (other than women like him), but I'm hoping he does better than the last guy that played Gambit. Part of that may have been on the director/studio/whoever that decided on his general look, but I didn't like it. On a more positive casting note, I did like the guy they had for Nightcrawler. So, you're suggesting her DNA would not have had the blueprints for adulthood because the x-gene, which typically manifests in adolescence, what, overrode or just nullified it? Just rewatched Cry Baby for the first time in years. I used to love all of John Waters' campy films! I remember it being the first big splash porn star cross-over with Traci Lords as Wanda. Johnny Depp is so fresh as Cry Baby, Ed from Northern Exposure is Hackett, and grandma's boyfriend is played by Iggy Pop! This is a cult classic worth catching up on if you missed it back in the early 90s.

Case in point: SHE HAS BLUE SKIN.
Bottom line, you just want her to look more like Romijn. Nothing wrong with that, I don't mind looking at her myself. Just realize it has nothing whatsoever to do with nature or canon. Lawrence's body type is just as correct, or more accurately just as incorrect. It's like asking the natural shape of water after it's been poured from a glass. It's not that I want her to look like Romijn. I do think Romijn looks more like Mystique than Lawrence, though. Obviously they had to change things up at this point, but they could have found someone that fit the mold a bit better. Mystique is lean and has a bit of a bony face. She's agile and a fighter. Jennifer Lawrence looks soft. She has a slightly puffy face and nothing about her appearance says, "This woman has the body of one who has been fighting/training hard for years."

I agree, not really buying J-Law as Mystique... nothing against her, per se -- she's awesome, despite the fact that Winter's Bone is the only role I've seen in which I actually liked her as an actress, but anyone that will photobomb celebs and generally act like a goof at a red-carpet events is okay in my book. It has nothing to do with her body type or whateves... I just didn't get the right vibe from her.
Also, Tatum as Gambit? What the ever-loving fuck?! Again, nothing against Tatum "Manhunk" Salad, but that is about as far removed as I can see someone getting that role... fuck, here's a better suggestion right out of my ass: Zach Efron*. Fuck. Anything but that.

Nahhh, Gambit was a die-hard Cajun without the harsh accent because of his upbringing. He was tall, wiry *That's lean and toned muscles, not giant bulging ones*, and they portrayed him as either REALLY grizzly, or clean-shaven *in the comics*. And he had one of those severely distinguishable smirks. That's something Tatum can't do. Is that smirk. And the body type's all wrong. Agree. And Shane West can't do Gambit. He just doesn't have.... that. I'd be more seeing..... With proper setup... Dennis Storhøi. I could SO get behind him as a Gambit. I think he'd nail that shit like a hammer. Just my opinion.
And yes, Nightcrawler rocks ass. They need more of him because FUCK. IT"S FUCKING NIGHTCRAWLER COME THE FUCK ON! NIGHTCRAWLER!

Second, if your idea of a fighter's build is face puffiness... again, I don't even know. Finally, the two pictures you've linked prove my point exactly: they are completely different body types. The left is dramatically more toned and muscular, the right is much more angular (chin and waist). She is a shapeshifter.

First of all, if a woman with G-cup breasts is your idea of lean then I don't even know.
I think it's a good idea to dismiss the comic book proportions in that area (and often the waist and musculature as well) when we're talking about applying those characters to real people.
Second, if your idea of a fighter's build is face puffiness... again, I don't even know.
No, the comment about her face was in relation to the comment about her having a soft appearance and Mystique having opposite facial features.
Finally, the two pictures you've linked prove my point exactly: they are completely different body types. The left is dramatically more toned and muscular, the right is much more angular (chin and waist). She is a shapeshifter.
That happens with different artists. Either way, I don't think any of those depictions illustrate a soft, almost child-like face that you get with Lawrence. She just doesn't fit with what most people think of as Mystique. It might not be so bad if she could pull off a little mean and intimidating, but she can't; just look at her holding that gun.
why does no one complain that Nicholas Hoult is too skinny to play Beast?
Heh, yeah. I think I hate his scrawny blue Beast so much that I try to ignore it. I suppose it might not be too easy to find a Beast-proportioned actor for the human stuff, so Hoult doesn't bother me so much in that regard. They should have at least had someone else play the part after he transformed.

The xmen movies are shit. I could count the ways as to which they suck. One being jennifer Lawrence as mystique is the worst casting in any comic book movie of all time. Horrible.
I totally agree with subzero. Jennifer Lawrence has a "soft" face and body when painted. I just don't buy her as mystique. Jennifer Lawrence happens to be the "it" actress the last few years and mystique has one of the coolest super hero powers of all time. Whammo, let's put the 2 together.
Reboot the whole fucking thing. Wolverine sucks, old magneto sucks, rogue sucks, mystique sucks , Halle berry as storm sucks, colossus is a fucking joke, ice man is an omega level mutant and they don't use him enough....
Patrick Stewart as professor x was perfect. They got that right. Famke Jansen as Jean grey was pretty solid. Ellen Paige as kitty was good. Michael fassbender was a good choice as young magneto. I just hated how they portray him as the mutant James Bond. He just "appears", and ominous music starts playing and he acts like a superspy. Rubbish.

Haha, yes, and I think Evan Peters is expertly cast! He was a scene stealer in every spot in this movie, imho, and I hope we see more of him.
I liked this movie overall but I also have issues with casting and stretching storylines to the Nth degree.
My biggest beef with this particular release of the movie franchise is Peter Dinklage's character. Now don't get me wrong. I frigging love the actor and have no personal issue with him or his acting, in this or anything else I've seen him in, frankly. I just had difficulty with suspension of disbelief that NOONE even blinks at a dwarf in a professional role in a 1973 setting. Not even a single casual comment is dropped, it's never once mentioned or referenced, even though it'd probably be an easy connection between his fascination with mutants. Now, this isn't sizism or any other prejudice on my part, it's just realism and my attempt to find some in this already hard pressed fantasy world. I don't expect dwarves to be wearing funny hats, but they are clearly 'different' and during the 70s, that just wasn't a super groovy thing to be. I'm not entirely sorry he was cast, but I wish they'd followed through to make it believable.
Character intros that I really liked: Blink and Quicksilver. Cannot get enough of Wolverine.
Biggest thing I did not like about this movie? THE TRAILERS! Seriously? Megan Fox in a rebarf of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

Here is an age progression stack which seems to make a lot of sense to me as far as what her normal 'growth' pattern might be from childhood to adulthood. Whether the character was portrayed accurately or if the overall looks match those of some fantasy art in old comics doesn't impress upon me so much as the continuity of character's looks in a particular franchise which must be employed carefully when jumping around in time from one release to the next. If they have to regurgitate popular Hollywood actresses (and really, does that actually surprise you?), I think in this case they didn't exactly fail miserably.

2 really good korean films I watched recently:
A Company Man (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2371486/), hitman gets a conscience kinda thing but done really well and a different take on the business.
Oldboy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/) (original version). Really incredible movie as well as an amazing performance from the actor of Oh Dae-Su, his emotion and expressions make it such a masterpiece.
I watched the Spike Lee version of Oldboy with Josh Brolin a night after the original and it would probably be pretty powerful if you have not seen the original, or perhaps not as closely back-to-back, but given the circumstances I thought it was really lacking in comparison. You're fed all of the emotion you're supposed to be feeling instead of Oh Dae-Su quite visibly experiencing it, as well as Josh Brolin's character being handed all of the answers/help rather than have to figure it out himself, and it just felt like a dumbed down version of it overall.
I'd post the portion about the new version in the bad movie thread, but really it wasn't "bad".. it just doesn't hold up at all to the original.

It was even more ridiculous than it sounds. In that way it is interesting. There is a monologue by Captain America actor Chris Evans that is so completely laughable considering how well he actually delivered the lines with a straight face. It has a lot of big names and they really delivered in terms of performance and that may be the one shining part of this movie. That they actually went "all in" on such a wildly bad movie.

Of course, the movie is over-stylized and definitely more attuned towards today's sci-fi market of utopian societies on the brink. As you might agree from the read (or not), the human story translates well into any timespace. It's noteworthy to also mention that Jeff Bridges does a great job acting, which was refreshing since I generally find him hit-or-miss.

Series? I thought it was a stand alone novel.
There are five or six books set in that alternate reality. Each book introduces new characters and aspects of that world.

Pawn Shop Chronicles (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1741243/). Wanted to watch it just because Vincent D'Onofrio was in it, and it was just... I don't even know, man. I thought the characters were well acted for as over the top as the movie could be. Lot of fairly big actors in it, I was surprised.

Huh. I enjoyed Dredd far more than The Raid. Not saying The Raid wasn't a good movie... but I've been a Judge Dredd fan for decades. Stallone's movie was good... in that it had a healthy bit of humor and action the original comics had. But the 2012 version caught the grittiness combined with some spectacular visual effects that I thought conveyed the near future genre very well.

It's biggest drawback was that it was superficial in that the character development was poor. Protagonists and antagonists were both very shallow.

Eh, your iconic is my meh. I'm not a huge movie fan as it is, because it's really easy for me to get kicked out of my suspension of disbelief groove. Flickering light bulb, signifying the disconnect with reality perhaps, it's so deep? Zoom in on that bad boy, in case anyone missed it the first time! Pfft, the director is trying too damned hard to make it artsy. I hate that crap. Whatever you thought of certain scenes, it was all wasted on a dream sequence plot.

Well, like I said I'm not into movies a lot, so I tend to like the ones that are particularly goofy/violent/some theme where they're really not asking me to believe in anything. Spinning through IMBDs top 250. I liked Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Leon the Professional, The Holy Grail, Blade Runner, Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire. Probably a lot of them, it was just my frame of mind when I initially saw them. Stingray Sam was also good in a weird kind of way.
Edit: Yes, IMBD, the Internet Movie Bata Dase.
