My girlfriend took me to see "It's Complicated" over the weekend.

Great performance by Meryl Streep, average from Steve Martin.

Problem was, they didn't have a lot to work with in the material.

Reccomendation: DVD from NetFlix for a date night movie.

The Cassandra Crossing

We put it on because we thought Enemy at the Gates was coming on, but the listing was wrong. We got this gem instead: OJ Simpson, Ava Gardner, Sophia Loren, Martin Sheen and Burt Lancaster are all involved in a plot in which the military wants to keep a biological weapon made of bubonic plague secret. One of the infected gets onto a train and does all he can to spread the disease (it's hilarious how he coughs into food, hugs babies, sweats all over and attacks people). OJ Simpson appears to be a priest, and has this exchange (paraphrased):

Kid: Why does this [handkerchief] have a J on it if your name is Haley?

OJ: Why, it stands for Baby Jesus of course

Maybe someone can clarify for me, what was up with that soccer kid? I mean they showed him dead but then he shows up again at the end of the movie. Did the bomb squad misidentify him as the body bomb kid in the building and if so why would James act unsurprised to see him again? I didn't get that part.

Mighty Nikkisaurus
02-14-2010, 12:43 AM
May be some spoilers so I'm going to write the rest in white. HIGHLIGHT TO READ.

This was my take.. He formed a relationship with Beckham, so when he thought the boy that had the bomb implanted into him was Beckham, it made him irrational because he had this personal tie. Because of that he behaved recklessly later on (when they went out to hunt the insurgents after investigating post-explosion at a bombing site) and his team mate gets hurt.. the same guy that was afraid and who he said he'd protect. Then it turns out Beckham isn't dead, and comes up to him trying to sell videos.

BUT, in that time it's enough to drive home a point to the main character that feeling attached to anyone immediately around him was a huge risk. So he ignored the kid and went on his way- I think in his eyes, the fact that he didn't do that in the first place is why his buddy got messed up so he was trying to make right by not continuing that relationship/friendship and presumably not allowing any others to come up... it's safer to feel that sort of love/comfort for loved ones that are far away and out of harms way (i.e. his girlfriend and his son) and are unable to impact him day to day. Because he saw that body and at the time believed it was Beckham, I think for the main character it was easier to not show shock because for him, Beckham was already dead. I hope that makes sense.

That's probably way more than you wanted to know, LOL. Bottom line: I don't think Beckham dies, I think he just thinks he dies and thus has a lot of guilt when he realizes he was wrong.

Ninja Assassin was fucking great. Met and exceeded expectations. Obviously not revolutionary but it's another Shoot 'Em Up type movie.

Leap Year was worth watching if only because I am weird and think Amy Adams is attractive. Not a bad movie but not really impressive.

The Hurt Locker I didn't really get into very much. Good technical work but I wasn't attached to it so it doesn't go beyond just being a movie for me.

It was made all the better by two teenage girls sitting in front of me. Real screamers, I swear. They freaked over the slightest thing. I love audiences like that in horror movies.

Note to all: If you're going to see Iron Man 2, wait around until AFTER the end credits (again).

Only really appeals to those who'd know to stay after the credits, already.
The first Iron Man, I was the only person who knew to stay till after the credits left in the theatre. Was kinda uncomfortable with them all thinking I'm asleep with my eyes open or something.

Winter's Bone.

A movie that, when you get to the end you aren't even sure if you liked it or not, but you did... it just creeped you out a little. Very good portrayal of the rural poor that doesn't over-use the crutches of incest, missing teeth and excessive accents. Good story, acting, directing, cinematography... good movie.

I felt book of eli was actually kind of boring. Its two hours of denzel walking through the desert, and oh yeah, a couple of fight scenes. Nice little twist at the end, but all in all the trailers led me to expect some sort of biblical epic about the struggle between good and evil... which it totally wasn't.

Dude... thats exactly what it was. Gary Oldman’s character knew that if he had the Bible he could control everyone with it. Denzel knew he had to protect it from being used that way... that it was a book for everyone. From the ashes of civilization the first book they reprinted was the first book ever mass produced by mankind.

Dude, I got it. I understood all the concepts represented, but honestly, it was one old man chasing another old man through the desert. It was not epic, as I was led to believe it would be. Not to mention giving the book to the "good guys" doesn't mean that people would be any less controlled by corrupt interpreters of said book that was mass produced. The whole thing was just plain stupid.

Predators was a pretty decent flick but I wish the non-human predators had more screen time.

Did your wife compare you to Charles Darwin after seeing it? Mine did. She said "He reminds me of you"... a statement which made me cringe with its total incorrectness. If anything I remind her of him, and not even him, but a fictional representation of him... and sure, we share a lot of the same ideas, but mostly because he came up with them first, and I read them.

This is precisely how I felt about The Sorcerer's Apprentice. I went in expecting crap but hoping to at least enjoy the dancing mops scene, but by the end I was actually very pleasantly surprised. I liked it at first, it was entertaining enough, but.. then I started thinking about it, it was really dumb. It just had some neat explosions in it, but... it just didn't feel like there was really any struggle or humanity in the movie. It was just "hey, here's this badass, watch him do badass things". I mean, I'm all for "Project badass", but they shouldn't try to pretend it's some great feat of cinema.

It's been a while but if I recall they did show how it effected him. There wasn't anything over dramatic (the drinking scene, some visceral reactions to child deaths, the ending) but to me it felt like the Iraq War version of the Vietnam vets that spent so long in the jungle in fucked up situations that when it was time to go home they didn't know how to live anymore.

"Kick-Ass" - Bloody, violent, touching, and incredibly good, despite a chaotic mix of the silly and the serious. Like "Batman Begins" meets "Superbad."

"Hot Tub Time Machine" - It has boobs, it's somewhat funny, but it's not very good.

"Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief" - A condensed and more serious version of the book, though the acting is sub-par. Some nice effects.

"Robin Hood" - surprisingly true to its medieval roots in some ways, it updates the Robin Hood character to be a champion of democratic republicanism and plays fast and loose with 13th-century history.

"Cop-Out" - Kevin Smith (dir.), Bruce Willis, and Tracy Morgan don't quite manage to produce a new "Lethal Weapon."

"Inglurious Basterds" - A surprising role for Brad Pitt, and an excellent movie. Great acting, intense plot.

Dude, Salt was a great movie. You know what else is a great movie? The Runaways. You know what else rules harder? Inglorious Basterds. I can never get enough of that movie.

Most recent movie I saw was (not new) Crank 2, and The Boondock Saints 2... I was in a mood for sequels.

I went and saw Machete again because a couple of my high school buddies were extras and I did not notice the first time. Plus, it was awesome.

Just saw Get Low. It was worth the price of admission.

Went and saw The Town tonight.. I thoroughly enjoyed it.. my residence in and love for Boston and surrounding neighborhoods, cinematics wise, also came into play. Chase scene through the North End into Charlestown was superb.

I just saw Robin Hood on my new LED TV. It was amazing. Cate Blanchett has white heads. :(

Salt was made of fail. Seriously, there was nothing good about that movie.

Machete was hilarious. It knew exactly what it was and did it well.

The new Resident Evil is also garbage, even by RE standards. Paul Anderson needs to DIAF (wtf is Milla Jovovich doing with him? :()

The big surprise for me recently was Takers. I expected it to be a dumb popcorn heist flick, but it was actually well written and well acted (with one exception, imho). In particular, my girlfriend and I were both surprised by Paul Walker and Hayden Christensen, whom I normally find reliable for uninspiring performances. They turned out to be two of the best parts of the film.

If you've ever seen The Italian Job, it's going to seem very familiar; it's really, really blatant where they're ripping it off (even going so far as to explicitly reference this fact in the movie itself). But even having seen TIJ before, I really enjoyed this movie too.

Finally saw The Blind Side on Friday. It just reinforced all my crazy arguments subject: adoption > breeding.

I liked it. Ridley Scott does a good job with the major motion picture epics. Crazy production, beautiful shots and likable characters in a decent story.

Uh... adoption can't take place without breeding... just sayin.

Saw Devil and enjoyed it. It wasn't a masterwork of suspense horror, but I didn't feel like I wasted my money on the price of admission.

Was there a non-sucky twist?

In Devil? I would say the "twist" is pretty straight forward.

What's worth getting out of the red box rental machines at the moment if anyone knows?

I only get to watch tv at night and would like to rent some of those fuckers.

My aunt watches tv non stop and it's like an 18" fucking screen and ALWAYS has two shows recording at a time 24/7 and it's nothing I like to watch except for some of the Discovery channel shit.

Going to see this tomorrow, huge fan of Shyamalan.

I've seen Galaxy Quest the last couple of times I've checked the boxes. Old one but always a great time.

The Social Network was awesome. The score by Trent Reznor was amazing and complimented the movie very well. The story is very bittersweet, I feel bad for Eduardo. Acting was better than I thought as well, while watching I felt that I somehow knew Mark and Eduardo.

I just saw the newest Rambo movie this weekend. Not exactly "new" anymore, but I enjoyed it much more than I expected.

Yes. Without even seeing the new version, I'm going to call it right here and state with a high degree of confidence that the original Swedish film is better than the Hollywood knockoff.

Speaking of which, did you (collective) notice that they're making an English version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? Holy fuck, it's going to suck.
