I think each state should be able to determine how their own districts are drawn, yes.

Funny thing is many Democrat states have put it in their constitution or passed laws that take the power away from the state legislature and governor and give it to an independent committee because they wanted to virtue signal, now they are bitching because they ceded that power.

I also think Democrats would have a harder time pulling this off because most of their support is in large cities, or they have already gerrymandered their districts to maximize their seats anyways. Only 17% of California districts are Republican, 26% of NY districts are Republican, and 32% of Texas districts are Democrat, and somehow Texas is the problem here.

If the people of Texas don't like what the state government is doing then they can vote those people out office.

Texas is a red state with a Republican governor. This practice is not unique to Republicans nor is it illegal. Democrats do the same thing. Gavin Newscum is plotting to do the same in California. As far as I know Illinois congressional districts were drawn after the census in 2020 according to the rules laid out by the state and they adhere to voting act restrictions of race, population, and balance.

The fact that it was redrawn by Democrats in the legislature with a democratic governor based on census records is all by the book.

What's happening in Texas is an obvious power grab. The Republicans have said it themselves. Trump has said they are entitled to five more seats. They're doing it without census information which is actually legal in the case of Texas but the way they've drawn it may run into issues with the voting rights act. Courts will determine if they are legal and if not will prevent them from being implemented. At least that's how it's supposed to work.

That being said, there is also an honest justification that Texas has added nearly 2 million people to its population since 2020 by refugees of failing blue states. When that happens there is good reason to take another look at the congressional districts and redraw lines to protect the political voice of impacted communities.

Instead, Texas State House Dems chose to flee from their position like the coward Moses Rose that left the Alamo before the fight with Santa Anna. They are holding up important disaster relief legislation for flood victims. Texans are pissed, and the Dems will not only lose this battle but pay dearly for abandoning their constituents.

I propose instead a better solution. This is an opportunity for you to come to our side or agree on certain principles. Our federal government needs to be small & lean. It exists for national defense, interstate commerce, foreign trade, etc. It does not exist to be the bloated monster that it has grown into. We all share values outlined in our Constitution. If California decided to succeed, there would be a West Virginia situation where the entire agricultural part of the state (The Republican majority parts) would just make a new state that stayed loyal. Then the rest of California would be fucked. No to mention they wouldn't be getting anymore water from the rest of the US.

Texas would equally be fucked. It has a great economy because of trade treaties the US has. Those all go away if it left. It would have to negotiate a treaty just to trade with Louisiana or Oklahoma. I mostly agree. Texas has a ton of natural resources and could theoretically be self sustainable as our own, but to your point it would suck. A bunch of Democrats fled to Massachusetts to protest the redistricting plans in Texas and the governor held a press conference to talk about how Texas and Trump are a threat to our democracy.

At one point a reporter asked the governor if Massachusetts was going to redraw their own state's districts in response to Texas and the governor said they just did and it was a fair and ordinary process and they followed the rules, then called up the Secretary of State to talk on the matter.

The first words out of the Secretary of State's mouth: "We have no Republicans to give."

And this got a laugh out of everyone in the room.

Yes that's right! Texas Republicans redoing their districts is a threat to our democracy! Massachusetts Democrats doing their districts in such a way that they get 80% of the vote yet 100% of the seats and that is funny!
