Thank you for your message! After a handful of chats from members within our community and in the South Asian communities, here's what we began to understand. The use of the word Namaste is a traditional greeting in India and is frequently misused in our western culture. (1/3)As in our case, knitting has little to do with Indian culture and has almost no connection to the origin of the term. When it was brought to our attention that we were using the term out of context, we too felt taken aback. (2/3)Yes that is a company that makes KNITTING BAGS that not only promised to stop making handbags with the name of "Namaste" because the word has nothing to do with knitting (???), but they literally apologized to people (as they said specially BIPOC and people in the South Asian community) for daring to use that word to begin with. But, after some research, and moreso, listening to the voices within our own community, we understood that it wasn't our place to continue to use a word for our own benefit - especially when those around us were feeling minimized with it's use. (3/3)
It never ends. Nothing is safe. This is why you never give in to the outrage mob because it just emboldens them and with everyone caving left and right lately the outrage mob is going after everyone, even a company that makes knitting bags of all things isn't safe from their terror.
Keep on thinking renaming things solves anything, morons.
