I do not begrudge the label of alarmist, because the truth is very alarming. Like many other crimes, child molestation is unfortunately so horrible that it is much easier to simply pretend it is impossible. In California alone 1,300 pedophiles are convicted per year. Between 80% and 93% of identified molested children are violated by someone they know. It's not the boogeyman in an alley you should watch out for, it's someone you know, someone you would invite into your home without a second thought, someone you would leave your child alone with for hours without a second thought. Again, this is a horrible prospect, the idea that your son's Little League coach or third grade teacher or guidance counselor might want to do the worst thing you could imagine to your son... but more horrible is that they might already have done it.
This is how humans are. If you had twenty kids in any given one of your elementary school classrooms, at least one of them was sexually abused at some point in their childhood. The problem isn't TV hype, the problem is that TV isn't hyping it any Goddamn where near enough.
Hasta pronto, porque la vida no termina aqui...
America, stop pushing. I know what I'm doing.
