The intended point of this thread (which to be fair was somewhat obscured for the first 13,000 posts) is to discuss whether Suppressed Poet is a jerk for not wanting his kids to be without adult supervision.

I mean this in all kindness and respectfulness sir, but I'm willing to bet you have no idea what the world is like today for parents & children. I bet your daughter didn't have that slut Kesha as a mainstream pop youth influence, and young kids with instant access to free mobile video pornography, and I bet back in those days when you were riding dinosaurs you didn't have to deal with mass assholes fixated on a tiny screen instead of watching the road in a school zone.

So yeah, I'm careful and restrict a lot of stuff. On the hair straightener yes because I don't want her to burn herself or the house down...but truthfully the main reason being is that at 10 she doesn't need to concern herself with straightening her hair, makeup, or tacky jewelry. I'm not about to let that whore bag Myley Cyrus be the norm for my children.

A phobic response would be to never let your children leave the house, which no one has advocated. I have found a useful belief to be that not everyone who disagrees with me is crazy, hysterical, or stupid. I think you could profit from a similar perspective.

We can agree that there is only an infinitesimal chance a serial killer will wander by your house when you happen to be out... but what about your childrens' teachers, their friends' parents, your neighbors? Put most generally: those people who could very easily observe the pattern of your children home alone. There are about 750,000 registered sex offenders in the United States, or 0.25% of the population. The size of a random group only needs to be 277 before you would expect at least one registered sex offender in it, and although not every sex offender is a child molester, you can be sure that the full set of sex offenders is much larger when we include people who haven't been convicted yet.

Please keep in mind that the above argument is statistical, the only inputs of which were (1) the US population and (2) the number of sex offenders. There is no (3) hysterical, sobbing terror.

Stop being an alarmist. Your Law and Order viewing education aside, a kid is more likely to get hit by that meteor Anticor mentioned than what you so fearfully describe.
