I have no issue with them walking home from school.

I have no issue with assigning chores and extorting free child labor.

I do have an issue with coming home to an empty house. Too many bad things can happen and it unnecessarily invites risk and/or trouble.

The only solution for your over protectiveness is obvious...wrap them in cotton batting and bubble wrap.

We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. We must remember always that accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law. We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men. Edward R. Murrow

9 and 10 and you're afraid of risk in their own empty house for an hour...with the expectation of homework and chores to be completed within that hour?

You sure you're not their bleeding heart mother? Seriously they're way old enough to stay at home assuming they've been raised to be responsible and they respect your word (PS they don't if you can't task them for an unsupervised hour). You being afraid will directly translate in to them being afraid, pusification of 'murica phase alpha.

I would trust my 7yr olds in that situation.

My husband and I leave our kids alone every evening while we walk (well, he runs, I walk because fuck that) and the house is still standing when we get home.

You can have the most disciplined, best intentioned children in the world and they will still lack proper understanding of the consequences of physics. Broken bones and a burnt down house are my primary concerns at those ages.

Broken bones don't bother me and my kids wouldn't burn the house down because they follow the rules...

I'm sure of it- your kids are probably much better kids than I was. My kid isn't the kind of kid I can leave alone for more than 5 or 10 minutes because of his condition, so I can only go off of myself as a child. I was basically a dick.

My neighborhood has too many door-to-door scammers..cough cough I mean salesmen and those of interesting religious affiliations...for me to leave my kids home alone on a regular basis.

My brother and I were as well but we also followed the rules we were given. Honestly with two kids a year apart it's less scary. I think summer between second and third grade was when we started being left home with lists of do's and don'ts as well as instructions.

I don't think there are any more dangers today then there were when we were growing up, we just hear about them more because the news has to scare people for ratings.

I can agree with that. We don't have anyone coming around the neighborhood...ever. And the house we're getting ready to buy has 1 house within half a mile so there isn't going to be too much foot traffic there.
