Oh, also, it's not my argument. It's the argument of almost every climate scientist and scientific organization on the planet.
These things have a way of working themselves out, if we will just stay out of it and let nature correct itself. I'm not worried, and you shouldn't be either.Quote:
More than a million homes and businesses along the nation’s coasts could flood repeatedly before ultimately being destroyed. Entire states in the Southeast and the Corn Belt may lose much of their agriculture as farming shifts northward in a warming world. Heat and humidity will probably grow so intense that spending time outside will become physically dangerous, throwing industries like construction and tourism into turmoil.
That is a picture of what may happen to the United States economy in a world of unchecked global warming, according to a major new report released Tuesday by a coalition of senior political and economic figures from the left, right and center, including three Treasury secretaries stretching back to the Nixon administration.

Who's worried? I'm not worried. Are you worried?
Staying inside just means more time to Internets.
Right, right. "Manipulating the data." Must be the colluding liberal influence of NOAA, NASA (and the UN)... under both Republican and Democratic administrations. Guess they've got LONG-TERM conspirators in there! Oh, and it flies right in the face of your already-debunked, ignorant, fallacious claims that "warming has suspended, therefore it's called climate change, and not global warming" (wrong).
PB doesn't believe in Jesus, just Reagan and freedom!

I have that up in my classroom.
That's fascinating. Do you also believe there was a man named Steve born in 1973?
You fatuous fucker.
It's not a shock that what I post went well above your understanding. Let me simplify it for you:
I believe there was a man named Jesus that created the belief in many people that he was the son of God.
I believe the man was real, but that his claim wasn't... given that I don't believe in God to begin with.
Does that help you?
http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/people_are_stupid.png
I just felt like posting today's XKCD in a still-active political thread.
What happened to cwolff? He's been AWOL for a couple weeks now. I kind of miss his stupid in a weird way.
Oh no, I understood completely. You decided to act like "believe in Jesus" is not a common phrase with a common usage, and instead try to play the asinine word games that you seem to enjoy so much because when it really comes down to it you don't really have much to offer beyond empty words.
Which is why you are a fatuous fucker.
Ahh, the old that can't be my new account because it existed before I left trick!
What a smooth criminal.

I've already apologized for upsetting you because that wasn't my intention. You took a post of mine in the wrong way.
You sure are spending a great deal of time on this for someone who doesn't care...Quote:
I have some bad news for you. Nobody cares, and you don't affect anybody in even the smallest way.
I honestly hope your day gets better. It got off to such a bad start!
My day got off to a wonderful start, actually. Outside of the roughly three minutes that involved you I have done some cleaning, had a delicious omelet, visited my grandma, and spent an hour and a half at the gym. I assure you, you do not have a spot on any list of shit that matters.
Besides, if the mere act of posting means somebody is upset, you have gotten upset almost 37,000 times now. You must be a very sensitive person. Probably explains why it's so important for you to think that you have some impact on somebody's day.
I first read that as "had a delicious mullet" and was like...
http://display.didioffendyou.com/1/5...4238618c8d.jpg
So, you were upset. How awful
It pains me greatly knowing I caused you such emotional distress for those 3 minutes.
No one has made that jump that posting means somebody is upset... except you. Most adults here are generally stable.Quote:

Used to back in my day.....
Climate changed four times a year.... we called them seasons.
You, stable? I realize that if all you do is hang around with unstable morons and folks with sub-average IQ's, you might begin to think you're normal. So that's one explanation for your odd self-assessment. Another explanation is that you're just so fucking retarded that you can't tell that you're one of the idiots in the room. I'm 50/50 as to which explanation is the better one.
Did you not get the memo? We still call them seasons. I know this is above your conservatard pay grade, but you might try the following image:

As long as republicans claim that their fellow Americans are the enemy I will never vote for them. Republicans tend to label "liberals" as the bad guy. What they are missing is that that is a construct of their own imagination currently. America is the best place in the world to live. When republicans rail against the best government in the world, and the best people in the world, I consider them equal to religious extremists.
You mean like Obama authorizing the illegal assassination of American citizens without due process? Or how about DHS labeling veterans of the Iraqi/Afghanistan war as well as those who look strongly upon the constitution as potential domestic terrorists? Yeah sure, only republicans label right? And what exactly makes us the greatest country in the world? It sure as he'll isn't our healthcare or education system.
You can't even do that right.

If I want to seek political advice, I think the first person I'd look to is some fagass moron who is busy scripting his way to Lich Room #2352359 (or somesuch). This country is dying because little cumstains like you get to vote in between your cybersessions in Silvergate Manor.
Do you think that most countries in the world have to deal with suicide bombers every time they go out of the house? Because no.
Australia, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark...there are many places which have a higher general quality of life than the US. Most lists the US doesn't even make it into the top 10.
Honestly, in New York I'd imagine you'd be in more danger from gangs than gun rights advocates.
Lease is what, a year?
Education is what, 2-3 years left?
Job? Come now..
I'm not saying people should up and leave without a plan.. I sure didn't... but if you are honestly miserable in the city/state/country you live in, why isn't your happiness your #1 priority at this stage in your life?
If his imagination wasn't powerful, then GS wouldn't be the best game in the world, but it is, so you must be wrong.
A large part of the reason for this is those places don't have massive populations of braindead conservatards fucking everything up. The QoL in the US will improve massively once we exterminate the conservative zealots who are fed, human centipede style, by Rupert Murdoch's asshole, to which their lips are permanently locked. Right wing conservatism is a social disease and the pariahs who have it need to be committed and treated for having a mental disorder.
http://www.slate.com/articles/techno...zing_iraq.html
It's not Obama's fault what's happening in Iraq.. it's caused by man made global warming.
Ahhh, yeah. Its called the Status of Forces Agreement, though its full official name was: Agreement Between the United States of America and the Republic of Iraq On the Withdrawal of United States Forces from Iraq and the Organization of Their Activities during Their Temporary Presence in Iraq. Bush signed it just before Obama took office, so the Obama administration had no control over it.
President Obama negotiated with the Iraqi government to change the SOFA to allow for troops to stay past the Dec. 31, 2011 deadline but they refused to change it.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...111801118.html
From the article:
The first is a status-of-forces agreement, called a SOFA, which would codify legal protections for U.S. military personnel and property in Iraq. Such agreements already govern U.S. military conduct in other long-term deployment zones-including Germany, Japan, and South Korea-and the administration has characterized talks for a SOFA in Iraq as a hopeful step toward stability. A draft of that agreement (PDF) from October 2008 shows significant concessions from the U.S. side. For instance, the Bush administration agreed to a total withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of 2011. The agreement would also place additional restrictions on how U.S. troops conducted missions, and require a pullout from Iraqi urban areas by July 2009.
Antarctica sets yet another record for sea ice area since tracking began in the 70's.
I thought global warming was causing the ice caps to melt and in 2 years Florida would be completely under water? What's happening here?!
Look up the "soft underbelly". Think of it like a massive Jenga. Having more pieces on the bottom is in general better, but not if the missing pieces are all concentrated in a specific area: that destabilizes the entire structure. If 100% coverage looks like this:
Then this:Code:XXXXX
XXXXX

isn't as bad as this:Code:XOXXX
XOXOX
OXOXX
XXXXO
OXOXX
even though the second one has a higher area covered.Code:OXXXX
OXXXX

And that's why you must vote for acquittal.
Perhaps, if you were the slightest bit intellectually curious, you could have found out the reality after only moments of searching: http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/fea...rctic-ice.html
Instead, you're content to go "Herpaderp! This confirms my ignorant layperson's understanding and must surely mean that the science behind climate change is a fraud and/or suspect!"
Try again.
Ice is melting faster at the north pole than it's expanding at the south pole. Antarctica has had about 193,000 additional square miles of ice past averages for the past 30 years, but the north pole is about 1,320,000 square miles below averages. As a whole, the planet is losing more and more ice, and Antarctica's small gains don't nearly make up for the loss as a whole.
Where the north pole is, but should be, and what the south pole was, and is:

My favorite part:
Wasn't this the same guy that was using shrinking ice deposits as an example of global warming a few years ago? And now that global sea ice area is up over a million square kilometers it's "not informative or useful".Quote:

So using shrinking ice as legitimate evidence of global warming is ok, but using growing ice as legitimate evidence to the contrary isn't?
Only one of us does that on a consistent basis, and it ain't me.Quote:

The article says that the ice is growing, and therefore global warming isn't happening.
The facts are that global ice values are decreasing, so the argument is inherently flawed on the most fundamental basis.
Furthermore... is it just me, or is Area a shitty measurement to use in the first place? I mean shit... by area, there's been no difference in snowfall between this last winter, and the last 5 before that.
By all means, dazzle us with your citation for that claim. And even if ice is up at this particular instant, we're losing critical bodies of ice.
There's a difference between sea ice and land ice; the sea ice in Antarctica melts and forms yearly, and does not affect sea levels. The land ice mass on Antarctica is thousands of years old (or more), and is being lost, even as sea ice in Antarctica has expanded a little.

Reading comprehension failure #59575 on your part, Tgo.. The north pole's ice averages are way, way below averages. The south pole's averages are slightly above averages. The planet, as a whole, is losing ice--especially the critical, sea-level-rising variety--regardless of Thondalar's fact-free assertion.
Did you read my link, Ashliana?
Yes, I did. Did you read what I wrote about the difference between sea ice and land ice?
"Three years of observations by ESA’s (the European Space Agency) CryoSat satellite show that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is losing over 150 cubic kilometres of ice each year – considerably more than when last surveyed."
http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Ob...ss_on_the_rise
Land ice continues to be lost, including in Antarctica:
http://i.imgur.com/Cw1OgMw.png
Sea levels continue to rise:
http://i.imgur.com/CMTqK52.png
To my knowledge, Dr. Meier does not post here as Ashliana.I don't know why ice loss in the Arctic means one thing and ice gain in the Anarctic means another. I'm not a climatologist. I'm merely pointing out that with absolutely no evidence, you believed Dr. Meier to be a hypocrite. Can you remember any times when you had a similar reaction to anti-climate change scientists?Quote:

Terrence, you just moved your bishop in a horizontal line and yelled "king me!". Time to sit a few plays out.
Boy this climate change thing gets more and more complicated doesn't it?
"The polar ice caps are melting! Sea levels are rising!"
"But, like, there is more ice in the arctic than there was in the past 30 years..."
"That's SEA ice you noob! Land ice is all that matters!"
Sort of like how scientists had to come up with a reason for why seasons were getting colder in the era when it was still called global "warming."
They nipped that one in the bud by renaming it climate change.
This is why it's totally pointless to argue with conservatives, especially the ones on this forum.
How many times have you been called out for incorrectly claiming that "scientists changed 'global warming' to 'climate change' to explain cooling"? That claim is false, and I've pointed you to NASA's statement on the subject--NASA under the Bush administration.
This is at least correction #3 or 4. http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/fea...ther_name.html
You're either willfully ignorant (BINGBINGBINGBINGBING) and/or so politically jaded, you're totally uninterested in reality (double BINGBINGBINGBINGBING!) because you've been told what to think by totally scientifically illiterate pundits.
That's right, Tgo. There's no need to think critically about humanity's impact on the planet or how the global community of scientists have come to the conclusion that we're having an impact on it--you can just dismiss their claims out of hand by inventing profit motives, while listening to to the unscientific opinions of people directly financed by oil companies, whose profit motives you don't question.
Retard.
Or he's just fucking with you... and getting an amazing rise out of you in the process.
Warming made it seem like the only issue is stuff getting a little hotter. Climate Change is more inclusive of other phenomena that is observed as a result of the increasing temperatures, such as more severe weather patterns, raising sea levels, longer growing seasons, increased pollen production, etc.
I'm curious about your use of the term "layperson" in this post. Is it due to...Quote:

It proves that the south pole is an evil capitalist that is getting rich off the back of the poor north pole and leaving it in ruins.
I use neutral terms whenever possible. Humanity vs. Mankind. Congressperson vs Congressman/woman, etc. I don't like making assumptions about other people's gender, especially when I only know them as a name on a forum. As you can probably guess, I don't place much importance on the preservation of the status quo for its own sake. And to answer your question from the other day, no, I am not a "Brony," and I'm not sure what your basis for suspecting I'd enjoy a children's show would be.
For that matter, "lay" has Catholic overtones!Surface area of earth: 510m km^2Quote:

Surface area of Antarctica: 14m km^2
Therefore Antarctica is a 2.5%er, not 1%er, so they are okay (like Al Gore).
A tragic victim of global warming:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aral_Sea
So what exactly was the point of posting that? To point out that things happen on the planet that aren't caused by climate change, as if that was somehow in dispute?
So... because man fucked up the Aral Sea... that means... climate change isn't real? Is that what you're getting at Atlanteax?
Earth itself was responsible for the climate change.
Dinosaurs were responsible for the last climate change.
Earth decided to mess with the climate some more.
Wait that's wrong.
It's all the humans fault that the climate changes. That's right.
Therefore it's only logical that humans were around at the formation of the earth, since the climate has been changing for the past 5+ million years... and since humans are the cause of climate change, then humans must be 5 million years old. It's only logical.
Technically speaking, you don't HAVE to go to school to study climatology. Climatology is the study of the climate, just like a climatologist is someone who studies it. There are "Climatologists" whose major was non science related fields.
So he could study his local climate, and call himself a climatologist, technically.
I just got it this week. So still learning the game... but really enjoying it. I like the strategy involved. It seems I'm to careful with my movements/overwatch positions to get all of the cube things, but getting slightly better. If anyone wants to play multi-player let me know, haven't done that yet. (on PC)
I didn't even know it had multiplayer. As far as the single player game though my final squad consisted of 2 snipers, 2 assault (one being a medic) and 1 heavy weapons expert. The two most lethal on the squad were a pair of russian chicks, one a sniper and the other a shotgun toting grenadier. The weakest was the heavy weapons dude.
My point is that our understanding of things is fundamentally flawed because humans. There is simply too much we don't know, and may never know, about our Earth, our Universe, and our place in them.
There's a guy who went to school for 12 years to study fish, and has spent the last 25 years studying Cichlids in Africa...small, fresh water fish...and he still doesn't know everything about them. Over generations our body of knowledge expands, but there are always factors we don't consider...some because we don't understand the importance of them and so discount them, some because we don't even know they exist.
To err is human. This is nowhere so evident as in the world of science. Allowing our hubris to get ahead of our common sense does more harm than good.
I tried to take the standard deviation but my calculator kept spitting out "drink your ovaltine".Not possible.Quote:

Latrin, what do you mean it's not possible?
Only one to two per cent of the world’s population has red hair but in Scotland the figure is about 13 per cent, or 650,000 people.
*
However, the figure could fall dramatically – and even see redheads die out completely in a few centuries – if predictions that the country’s climate is set to become much sunnier are true.
*
Dr Alistair Moffat, boss of genetic testing company ScotlandsDNA, said: “We think red hair in Scotland, Ireland and the north of England is adaptation to the climate. We do not get enough sun and have to get all the vitamin D we can.
*
“If it was to get less cloudy and there was more sun, there would be fewer people carrying the gene.”
THIS SHIT JUST GOT REAL!

At least the military's not denying climate change. Too bad the political chickenhawks don't follow their lead.
Quote:
While some in Congress call it a "hoax" or a "chicken-little scheme," the Pentagon continues to plan, with strategy documents outlining everything from how receding sea ice will open up new challenges in the Arctic to listing bases that will be affected by increased storms.
"The climate is changing," Titley writes in the closing of his Op-Ed. "We can do something about it. For the sake of our nation and the world, we must act."
They also have a plan for a Zombie apocalypse, and an Invasion by aliens. They likely have a plan for an attack by the Blob, Godzilla, giant robots, and Wizards and Witches.
It's the Pentagon, they have to have a plan for everything. The pentagon's plan tho has nothing to do with fixing it, or stopping it, it's a "if this happens, this is what we will do".
Yeah.. cause you know.. the Pentagon is the epitome of straight forwardness and honesty.
I mean.. they wouldn't spend tens of billions on a project NO ONE wants, would they? Not to mention the fact that most of the people that get to decide if we SHOULD build a specific weapon or platform, end up working for the people that get the contracts... no.. no corruption there.
So you are saying the Pentagon has a plan to stop global Warming and fix the problem???!!!??? Wow, that's fucking amazing. What is it?
I pointed out the pentagon has to make plans for EVERY eventuality. That's simply pragmatic. Not sure how exactly that makes me wrong.
But keep talking stupid, you are good at it. We actually missed your level of Stupidity, we were left with just Back's.
They're going to shoot it, duh.
http://weknowmemes.com/wp-content/up...-tornadoes.jpg
I'm not going to say they aren't above reproach or that the revolving door policy isn't an issue, because it is. But it isn't the Pentagon that has the final word on what gets funded and what doesn't. There are a number of recent cases where the Pentagon has informed congress that it doesn't need something but congress goes ahead with it anyways, because hey, that's more money and votes for them.
You're an idiot. They're not planning for it in some thought experiment war-games type of way. They are actively dealing with it and the changes that the globe is experiencing because of it now. What you missed from the article is that this isn't a theoretical "what-if" for the USN. It's real, it's happening and they are adjusting missions and preparedness accordingly.
