The thing is, most Republicans and most Americans in general are somewhere in the middle. We don’t want to see non medicaly necessary abortions up until the moment of birth, but also don’t want to have an outright ban especially before XX number of weeks. That issue has been killing Republicans at the polls. They tried this in Virginia, but I think it’s a message delivery / marketing to the voter issue.

Edit: Even those not in the middle on abortion I think could live with a compromise as opposed to the constant battle we have now.
