Well I couldn't find the original thread so here it is.. I decided to share with you all our rat. We're hoping it'll die soon.. we've had it for like three years

Why do you hope it'll die?

GSLeloo
03-21-2004, 02:20 PM
Yes that's the one that tried to drown itself. And cause... we're sick of having the rat, ferret, and bird. All three are in this one room and they make it smell and it's a nice room with lots and lots of windows so we want to like reclaim the room and make it into a library. To do that, they have to die.

Why not just sell them?

Is Baby an Irish Setter, Leloo? I have never owned one, but always heard they were dumb as posts. Is yours stupid?

HarmNone, wondering, as always

Baby is a golden retriever. She's very dumb until she wants food and then she's very very tricky.

I'll take the rat, just stuff it in an envelope and mail it to me so he doesnt have to die.

Hee! I guess she is only smart enough to learn what she wants to know, eh? ;)

Sounds like your family learned the oft-touted truth about pet ownership the hard way. Pets are not only with you for the duration of their cuteness. They are with you for the duration of their lives if you are a responsible pet owner.

We never chose the rats. My brother got the ferret and the rat and the bird and then didn't take care of them so my parents took over out of pity for them. And the bird kicks shit out of its cage.... I will never have any pet other than a cat or a dog.

GSLeloo
03-21-2004, 02:31 PM
Oh and we used to have four birds, a snake, fish, a lizard, crayfish, two cats, and the puppy.

Ahh. It was the brother who brought things home and opted out of the care, eh? He is a lucky fellah. My mother always made it crystal clear that if I brought it home it was mine, not hers. I did not want to find out what would happen if I did not take care of my adopted friends. My mother can be a very scary person when she sets her mind to be. My pets were well cared for. :D

My dog would pwn all of your pets. This is her at 5 months. We were training her to leave the treat on her paw until we told her she could eat it.

She's 130 pounds now. Now we're trying the one where she has the treat on her nose and flips it into the air and catches it.

So my roomate goes and adopts a dog. I'm not the biggest dog person, and we live in a two bedroom apartment. I'm not thinking this is going to work out. He has a fishtank that I have to light up and feed every so often. He brings a dog home and you know who is going to be walking it from time to time...

But, she is such a beauty. Well trained. I took this pic because I can't get over how unreal she looks. Named Tasha. Papers say husky, but she has to be part malamut. Sleigh dog. The ears have not been cut, and I did not enhance this in any way.

Hmmm I hate cats, but my boy has a kitty named Una. Funniest shit happened last night, we went on the porch (he lives on the second floor), Una jumped out of his arms and off the porch and landed on the cable wires going from the house to the post on the side walk. Mike ran downstairs to see if he could catch her, my other boy Jeorge and I looked over the ledge and was like OMFG! Then we cracked up, cos we was hammered and such. The cat fell off the cable wires, rofl! Ok let me find pic's of her, she's cute though.

Usually as long as a dog years in captivity.

In the wild 40-50 years.

He does look arrogant, but he is one of the sweetest cats alive, I swear. He loves laying on people and being scratched and petted. He searches out people, he purrs on a continous basis, enough to power a house. His favorite position is on his back, sprawled across your lap, asleep, purring, as you rub his belly.

Ayla is half german shepard and half boxer. And thankyou :) We do get a lot of compliments about her. Luckily, her personality is just as good.
Sam is half spaniel and half labrador hehe. He's ten now. Have had both since each was 3 months old. Ayla is 3.

That iguana rocks. Rick want's one but we are waiting til we get back to the states.

Okay, so when I look at Anticor's pic it looks very stylized, like an oil painting, and those red eyes just look demonic.

To keep everyone on track, the siberian husky mix we adopted that looked like a wolf? Yeah, she mauled our min pin and was abruptly returned to the pound. Nobody attacks my baby.

So in the midst of my devistation, we adopted another dog, this time a 3 month old german shepherd. As soon as I get my hands on a digital I promise to post.

That was just one of the lucky shots we got of her sitting still. I need to get some camera or program that takes the red out, she has these really cool green eyes.

Shari
08-14-2004, 01:45 AM
Actually, if you can situate her where she doesn't look DIRECTLY into the camera, it will keep the tyes from turning red. The reason why that happens is it is the light bouncing of the blood vessles in the back of the eye and reading back into the memory (or film) of the camera. Like that with humans too.

If you can get her to look at a treat you hold above your head while you take the picture, you should be golden.

The orange dog, ya know, the one that looks like an over-inflated football? That's Rusty. Dog never ceases to crack me the hell up, he's a riot.

Our newest addition, the cream colored puppy is Bailey. Was told at the pound he's a german shepherd mix, but there is a sub-species of the breed called Belgian Malinois. Anyway, he's SOO cute and he's a total lover.

OY Peam that hurts! My dogs don 't bark and are well behaved little babies. Any dog who isn't trained properly can be an ass. I do hate it when people generalize a breed.

I raised Rottweillers when I lived in NY and my 150 pound male would climb into your lap, he dispelled alot of peoples fears on the breed. It isn't so much the dog as it is the enviorment they are raised in.

Kyra

Well, yes if you go to a pet store(99% know zero about birds & sell unhealthy ones at that).

This particular conure was dumped on my doorstep at about 3 a.m...after vet bills, new cage & such she cost about $500..lol.

Really though, your best bet is a private breeder. The bird is more apt to be tame & healthy. A green cheek goes for about $125-150 from a private breeder.

Yup Abel came from Monica's Heart in Altoona, PA. I will be sure to tell him that you love him :)

Some are skiddish, but Abel isn't really. Screaming and loud noises bother him. Also, they exhibit some "nervous" behaviors that other dogs don't that most people don't understand. Greyhounds are a very communicative breed, so when Abel paws or tries to take your hand with his teeth, he is saying "I need something". Most people get scared when a dog takes their hand in its mouth, understandably :)

Also, if a greyhound chatters his teeth at you, (knitting), he's saying, "I love you" or "I'm excited."

Those are three of the skiddish behaviors associated with the breed (noises/knitting/biting). Not sure if the dog you were caring for exhibited those or not. Often, the new ones will have trouble with stairs too since they are often kept in kennels.

If you ever look into getting one and rescue it, expect to have someone from the agency come out and review your home to make sure it's safe. They need a lot of activity, (abel walks 6 mi with me sometimes, though 1 mile a day is good), and the people will want to be sure you understand how to care for one.

examples: They can freeze to death if you leave them outside, and if outside in the winter, they need to be wearing their coats. Abel has a maroon and grey racing jacket.

Since they can freeze to death and since some of the underground electric fences can't stop them going at full tilt, (they can run 45 mph), all outside time is lead time.

Also, a greyhound can't track his/her way home like most breeds. They're sight hounds, so losing one could easily be fatal.

If none of that bothers you though, we were on a wait list for 4 months for Abel. He was my birthday present last year, and I really couldn't be happier with him. They are awesome dogs overall. :D

It turns out it will be another year and half. I'm going nuts, I miss that dang horse.

Cat is sad story :( I got her as a kitten and she had another kitten of her own later who we named Phoenix (Mom is Ashes.....)

Ashes was always her own chick, but Phoenix adored me and was more a dog/puppy. When she was 4 she and Ashes (they were very close) went outside and Phoenix never came back. From that day on Ashes refused to go outside. Whatever happened to her baby she saw and it terrified her. She went from lean kitty to chubby cat. Even on diet food and dogs and kids chasing her.

To this day, I'm not sure who misses Phoenix more, me or her.

Aww Cai and Bratt, your horses are both awesome. I never got to hang out as much as I'd liked with horses, though I did volunteer at a stable for a few years. I'm a big push over for animals though. Horses, Cats, Rats, Ferrets, Dogs, Snakes, Orphaned Squirrels -- heh.

Abel also sticks his tongue out arbitrarily at strange times...like when he sleeps. BTW he often sleeps with his eyes open. I've been told that's sort of normal for their breed, but it's kind of unnerving to see sometimes -- especially when he looks dead!

My orphaned squirrels -- reared and released back into the wildlife refuge in New Hope, PA after a stay with me. We found them right after watching LotR Return of the King.

Lawnmower Squirrel -- Gollum. The reason we hesitated to take them to the shelter for so long as because of Gollum's headwound -- didn't think the poor thing was going to live. :saint:

Thanks :)

Fostering squirrels isn't popular because it's a lot of continuous work when they are that young.

Cage must be kept between 99-101d f. Human contact should be at a minimum to mimic the conditions of a real nest. They need to be fed every 2-3 hours. As with all infant rodents, the mother licks the genitallia to convince them to urinate and deficate after every feeding. This is mimic'd with a cotton swab and the bottle of J&J in the pic. They require special food: pedialyte, just borne puppy, vitamin suppliments, and beneficial bacteria. All are available at PetCo. They also have to be monitored VERY closely for any sign of diarriah because it's easily fatal to them. They further can't be around other animals, especially cats as a cat scratch or bite is fatal to a squirrel.

At the time we found them, I was a pre-vet student though, and VERY interested in keeping them alive. My father didn't believe the one he hit with the mower would live through the night as both had fallen out of their nest and laid on the ground long enough to be cold to touch. Further, Gollum was in heavy shock, (shaking/panting/unresponsive), from the hit, though he was screaming when he got hit, so that was a good sign.

Raising them, and especially when their eyes opened, was one of the most rewarding things I have done with animals in my life, though it was a ton of work. I do know, however now, that they made it to adulthood and are living in the refugee in New Hope. I have tag numbers on them that they gave us when we released them, and I can call for updates on their condition at any time. You just don't get that when you turn abandoned/infant animals over to the state; I was almost positive they would have killed one, if not both.

Melissa thanks for the info, I had to raise a foal due to her mother rejecting her and I thought that was hard. What you described makes me having to raise that foal a piece of cake. Kudos to you for taking that time to save an animal.

I usually have a siamese, but after the last one died I couldn't bear to get another. We got Allie at a rescue shelter. She's a really awesome cat.

Meeeeeeee-ow. Your cat is adorable TRL. I like his/her mountain dew eyes. Very calculating.

Have you ever see Ocicats? -They look like miniature leopards. I want one of those or an entire litter/shelter/etc of all cats, but everyone here is alergic.

edited cuz I decided I didn't need two pics of ocicats stealing the show from TRL's cat because cats are jealous creatures :)

Yes... more of the pets. It's a gorgeous day here and I've been out mowing the yard. Came in for some water and had to pass the dogs sunbathing and low and behold, the cat was too...

What a cute old pup. She has those sad Labby eyes that make my heart melt.

SHM, I bet they'll all be happy when you get that door Bratt found. Then they can sunbathe at leisure! :)

Don't know if I ever posted this one, but this was Spike the goat from the zoo. He was a huge goat, very tall even for a Nubian. Friendliest goat in the world and the only one who would forgive me in the days immediately following vaccination time.

After he got old and way too skinny the zoo put up a graphic for the public about what an old fellow he was and how we were working with his health issues. People loved it and he was always a favorite with visitors, showing them where the feed machines were and encouraging them to spend those quarters.

Alright, had to share these...

New picture of Little Frankie, and our newest addition....

Our little one-legged zibra finch, Peg.

She got her leg caught in the silk plants hanging in the cage at my work and her leg got mangled. I was the one who had to pull her out and put her in the sickroom, I felt so bad for the poor thing.

The leg ended up getting infected and they had to amputate her foot. As part of my guilt I volunteered to take her home (with a bribe of a free cage and the accessories).

She's actually one of the most low-maintenence pets I've had, and she isn't anywhere NEAR as messy as the god aweful parakeet I had once.

Isn't she cute!?

Cute bird.

I wish my camcorder was charged Saturday night. We had another couple over and had them playing Dance Dance Revolution (we brushed the dust off of the two dance pads we have). But what was funny (and what I wish I had on camera) is when one of the guests was dancing and my dog was walking around on the other pad and my dog was winning.

Our Akita "Desiree". She has different colored eyes which is why they look oddly colored in the photo. One is blue, and the other brown.

And our rockweiler "Poopie" who is an absolute sweetheart even though she looks mean as hell. I still can't believe she sat still long enough for me to snap the shot. She loves to play.

Finches don't make noises like other birds, such as parakeets, cocatiels, and the other large birds, thank god.

I can't stand that shit and its a miracle I'm able to tune it out at work.

Finches make a little beeping or buz noise. I think its kindof cute. But, she can get pretty chatty which is why I let her sit outside when its nice outside.

That's a nice setup, I like the stand.

How come you don't have anything pretty in there for her, like some silk plants or something!?!
