I'm gonna get the plastic imitation banana leaves tomorrow, along with another heatlamp cause just having one for the terrarium is really not dispersing the heat too well.

I don't get it. Most cat lovers don't really have a problem with dogs. Yet Dog lovers almost always seem to have a problem with cats (and I don't mean those people that just naturally love both animals equally).

Cat lovers are used to the animal that doesn't believe they're worth the time..
Dogs are loyal to a fault
Cat lovers consider it a bonus
Dog lovers have higher standards..
Iguanas scare me.

I love all animals :) ..except bugs. I draw the line at roaches and bugs, but I like spiders because they eat bugs! That said, I'd never kill a bug, just put it outside where I don't have to look at it.
Cats make up for their independence by showing intense amounts of affection at unexpected times that often border on some kind of psychic radar. -Like when you've had a horrid day, they will come up and headbutt your stomach and purr. My hound on the other hand, is currently hogging about 3/4 of the bed sleeping beside me now as I type this.

I'm an animal lover but if I had the choice I'd pick my cats any day. My little one who is about 2 years old now is like my baby. He sits with me at the computer and will follow me into the bathroom regardless of where he is in my appartment. If I don't let him in he'll claw under the door and whine.
All of mine are really affectionate and they've always been like that. Dogs on the other hand if they're not trained properly are a nightmare. Cats really can't be trained per se, they'll do what they want but having an eight pound cat act up is much preferable to having a 50 pound dog being a bitch.

I know it's a bit of a bump, but head-butting your stomach is a sign of affection? I would have thought it'd be like body-language fighting-words.

Here are the puppies! they are 3 weeks old now. I do have a special needs puppy that I am willing to give to someone here <or if they know of a responsible owner>
The puppy is the biggest male of the litter and it appears he is blind in one eye. It is a hazy blue and after talking to a friend she suggested that another one of the puppies may have scratched his eye resulting in the damage to the eye. He is healthy and fat and very well bred.
My friend also said that it may very well clear up, I just want a good home for him and if there is someone here willing to give him that they can have him but must only pay for his shipping. If the eye clears up by the time he is ready to go you can still have him for free. Great home is the only thing I am concerned with. U2U me for details.
Here's my new little guy. I can actually call this one my very own. He's already spoiled too.

I met a very cool cat today. Mike and I have a big pond in our back yard, and we let the guy down the street bring the neighborhood kids over to fish and swim. (My only rule, any kid wanting to use the pond must be with an adult or bang on the door and ask me to play lifeguard. The kids are good about honoring it.)
Anyway, tonight a big three legged orange tabby named Buddy showed up with the kids and claimed the dock for his own. Great cat, gorgeous and very friendly. I'll have to try for a picture.
And I'm really sorry for the loss of your cat. The grief one feels for a pet can be so utterly heartbreaking, the more so because so many will say 'get over it, it's only an animal'. I always feel so sorry for those who have never experienced the unconditional love of an animal companion. I hope you find another special kitty to fill that gap in your life.

Kitten, is the stuffed animal in the picture with Lorne his "littermate" substitute? The vet told me to do the same thing for Dumpling when we found her. Now she's bigger than the littermate animal we gave her, and she carries it all over the house and will yank it away from the other cats if they go near it.

Yeah, either a littermate or mom substitute. When we got Lorne, he was old enough to eat on his own, but still such a baby thing I hated seeing him alone in a bed that looked way too huge. So I got 'Teddy' For him.
When we have really sick kittens in the shelter we always give them a stuffed toy to bond with. It seems to ease their stress level and make recovery faster for them.
I used to have a cat named Dumpling. She was a total princess and we both doted on her. She was blind and trained to walk on a leash. She shared every vacation we took for the 16 years we were lucky enough to have her.

I wish I could train my cats to walk on a leash. We used to have some neighbors that walked their cats and it was so cute.
We named our dumpling such because we found her by the dumpster. I'll see if I have some recent pictures of her somewhere.

OK, this picture is one of Dumpling right after we found her. She was scrawny as hell and dirty, so after we took her to the vet to make sure she was OK we gave her a bath in the sink. The other picture is of her after she obviously fell asleep on Jake's computer...

Yep, Kitten, that's what the vet said she was. We take our cats to this vet that does just cats, and she knows all kinds of cool things about cat genes - like how calico cats are hardly ever male (like 1 in 3000) and how if you have an all-white, blue-eyed cat that is also male, they are always deaf without exception.
And the puppies are so adorable! I never had cats (just dogs) growing up because my dad was allergic, but I always wanted one. We're going to get a puppy when we get a house with a yard, though - I just don't think it's fair to have one right now when we don't have the space to give the poor thing. I'd love to have a ton of space like you, Brattt - how many dogs do you have overall?

I'll dig around and see if i can find any. She passed away about four years ago. She was a gorgeous cat, muted torti color with green eyes and a very dainty little face. We named her Sixpack because she spent two months of her kittenhood in a body brace to correct a birth defect, and the way the brace was built she looked just like a sixpack of beer.

In American English taffy is a term for a type of chewy candy, such as salt water taffy. Taffy is made by stretching or pulling until fluffy a sticky mass of boiled sugar, butter, flavorings, and coloring. When this process is complete the taffy is cut into small pastel-colored pieces and wrapped in wax paper to keep it soft. It usually has a fruity flavor, but many other flavors are common.
Yum!

Well, the coolest thing to me was when I went to shelter..I had a horrible time deciding, but Chai really got my attention because as I walked by she looked at me and let out this huge "MrEOW!"
It was liked she was trying to get my attention! She's also a purr monster, the second I started patting her she was all cuddly..:) Perry is more relaxed, but he's very loving too.
I was just looking for one cat, but since she had a brother I couldn't resist..My cat now is going to have to get adjusted to the others now.

When I went searching for my cats, I was specifically looking for two sibling cats. They have to keep each other company while I'm gone!
I highly recommend shelter adoptions too. I'm lucky to have found my girls at one (they had been dropped off not even a week before I went there looking). Fate, I tell ya!

I got my two from an organization that had their cats fostered. I had never even heard of that before and was amazed at the concept. I couldn't be happier though. My cats are so loving and playful while being such good girls at the same time. On top of that, this organization checks up on their cats and made sure they were being treated properly as well. They even showed us how to trim their claws properly. I totally want to do something like that one day and I think it's admirable that you do!
If I ever get a cat.. I want one of those furless cats. Damn, they look awesome. Y'know, the Mr. Bigglesworth types. I heard they cost like $1,000 though.
- Arkans
That would be the Sphynx. They're really wonderful pets. The next closest would be a Cornish Rex or a Devon Rex. The Devons are a bit smaller than the Cornish, but they're both very intelligent and playful.

I've had my kittens for a few months. The shelter I foster for keeps them in their foster homes until they're finished with their vaccination series and have been altered and dewormed.
It's very hard letting them go when it's time, but if I kept them I'd soon have to quit fostering and I'd lose the opportunity to constantly be surrounded by kitten antics.
Fostering is a great concept. It keeps animals out of cages and eases overcrowding at the facility. I feed them, shelter them, and give them my time and love. In return they give me a never-ending source of 'cuteness fixes' and a warm little purring fluffball when I just have to cuddle something. It's a real win/win situation.

My 2 are from the local shelter too. They do a fantastic job there. By the time you can adopt them they're already fixed, dewormed, and had their first series of shots.

Arkans, I think you're thinking of Tyransaurs Rex cats .. um.. something rex.. uh...(google) CORNISH! yeah Cornish Rex's kick ass. A friend of mine has three and there is no way he bought $3k worth of cats. Pretty sure you can get them free/cheap. They are real talkative and friendly.
When I get home I'll try to post the pics I have of them, they're awesome.
I've been thinking of getting a cat lately, I miss having a pet, and I just got some work building an application for the CT Humane Society, so I'm thinking about pets constantly now... Pets and Gemstone...

Probably moreso dogs than cats, though we see our share of Siamese and Persians.
In the shelter yesterday we had a glut of purebred dogs dumped. Two dalmations, two Shar-pei's, two weiner dogs, a lab, a beagle, a papillion, a maltese and a pug. It was like somebody closed up their puppy mill and left their breeders in our drop box, poor things.
Usually about 75% of the dumped dogs are mixed breeds, and about 99.5% of the dumped cats. To have so many purebreds show up at one time was nothing short of amazing.

That picture was taken last night. It's the only recent picture I have where he's not looking extremely skinny. He's just under 4 years old which is the equivalent of a 80-90 old person and he's got spinal degeneration. It's really common in older rats and it's caused him not to be able to use his back legs as well. It's not painful so he's still as happy as anything, but he's lost a lot of muscle mass leaving him really skinny.
Here's his brother Frank, he passed away in December. The other one is Peter and Frank when they were about 6 months old. Edited to add: Peter's on the left. Frank's on the right.

Dude, bearded dragons are the shit. Pity they eat like 50 large crickets in a sitting.
The only way I can tell the sex of a beardie is by the color. Males are going to be more vibrant yellow/orange while the females will be tan/brown. Find a local petshop or exotic vet that can help you better identify.

I'd not take it to a petshop to help with anything. Petco told me she'll eat about 3-4 crickets a day (she eats closer to 60). And the color is completely dependant on genetics, not sex. You'd be awfully confused if someone brought in an lemon, blood red, sunburst, or leucistic snow bearded dragon. Color can also change slightly due to body temperature.

Yep, all Jack. Callahan only does that when someone makes an odd sound that they'd never made before. At that point, I think I was blowing through a couple of sheets of paper I had in my mouth. You know, that elephant-like sound? It was twitchin' him out.

The bearded eats about 60-100 crickets a day now. She'll eat about 30 a week when she gets older. She eats the 60-100 in about 5 minutes too.
When I first got her, she wouldn't eat anything. She ate like 5 crickets a day and I thought that was normal because I was told that at the pet store but when she got into better health, she ate crickets like she'd never eat again. She's really an awesome lizard. I recommend them to anyone who's looking to get a lizard. If you can afford the crickets, they're extremely docile and they're one of the very very few lizards that actually enjoy human interaction.

You have a rottie too don't you Dev, where are pictures of that one? Cute pic of the puppy out in the <shudder> snow.
Yep, it was the first snow of the year, and for him so when he finally stopped trying to eat it I snapped a shot of him.
The Rottie and Akita are family pets, specifically my mom and step-dad's, but I love them like they were my own.

This is Jolie. I've fostered her since she was six weeks old. She goes up for adoption this Friday. It's sad when they return to the shelter, but I'm really happy when they get homes.

The kitten (now cat) I adopted was fostered before I adopted her, so many do go to good homes.....and thanks for your fostering.
Here is a pick of the little monkey, she looks like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth but she is a real devil.

To my eyes, there is nothing more beautiful than a sleeping cat (even one that looks like it's being swallowed by a multi-colored python). :)

Hehe.. it's a rolled up yoga mat. She managed to get half way in. Her brother found her, flopped outside, and started washing her feet.
After she came out, he wiggled his hind quarters in and just stared up like "I don't see what the big deal is"

I've got two black and whites who can be found in various stages of disarray at just about anytime, and just about anywhere. They may, or may not, be accompanied by a huge Siamese and an overweight Himalayan. Whether singly or in groups they may, or may not, be counted coup upon by a very fast, very active, very vengeful tortie and white interloper.
Ahh, how I do love cats! :D

I didn't realize there was a pet picture thread?! This picture that I'm posting reminds me of the SNES video game, 'The Legend of Zelda: A Link To the Past'. It does so because of the trickle of light that is showing on my dog's back.
If you've played that game, there's this part where you have to have the 'boss' of the area follow you around -- she transforms from a beautiful girl into a big baddo once you take her into a room that has light flowing like in this picture, and have her enter said light.
Edited to add: This is his favourite emo picture, by the way.

I didn't realise it was light.
I thought you'd shaved lines into her/him.

I didn't want to make a new thread.. there's a pic of dogs in the link! :bleh:
Pet "Gifts" (http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/retail/2005-12-04-pets-holidays_x.htm)
A snippet of the article:
Coming in January and available for order now is the PetsCell, a bone-shaped mobile phone by PetsMobility in Scottsdale, Ariz. The waterproof phone hangs from a collar and can be programmed to recognize incoming numbers to pick up so the owner can speak to the dog. Price: about $349 for the phone, plus $16-a-month calling plans.
The picture on the link is CUTE. I'm flabberghasted someone would buy said waterproof phone though.

So normally I'm not a fan of dogs in clothing, but my dog is FREEZING this winter and ends up shaking everytime we take her out. So, I broke down and bought a sweater. Here's the pic!

This is my pup. She passed away last year from a stroke, but she lived a very very long and happy life. Believe it or not, she's 17 years old in this picture. By this point, she was mostly blind (she almost lost one of her eyes a few years ago) and mostly deaf (her right ear didn't always stick up like that.) She was a sweetheart, though.
