I like alcoholic beverages, from beer to shots.

Lets talk about beer.

American beer. American beer is Budwieser, Coors, Miller and all that. And while it is a decently cost beer, they do not really shine in the taste department. You have to realize these beers came from the same place. The independent brewery.

The Independant brewers here still make the kind of beer that the American corporate beers came from. Yes, Americans would not have beer if it weren’t for the [germans] Europeans... or Africans.

My home state makes an awesome bottle bock. Shiner Bock.

Being a big fan of bocks, and Guinness, I also like a lager on the warmer days. Especially a Sapporo or an OB.

For those in the Michigan area, hit up the Michigan Brewing Company. They have fine wheat beers and their pumpkin ale is to die for. It tastes just like pumpkin pie. Drink one on a Thursday in February and you'll feel like your at Grandma's watchin the Lions on Thanksgiving Day.

Other than that I enjoy a Stella for a good taste and decent buzz. Also, when in Colorado I grab a couple cases of In Heat Wheat.

I don't really care for beer. I especially dislike lager beers. The only beer I ever found that I could actually enjoy was the dark beer on draft in British pubs. :)

You want REAL beer, come to Canada. We got the real shit.

I got two 4-packs of those Molson Canadian cold shot's last night.. Punched the hole in, and chugged. That is some good stuff :)

Generally I'd rather drink a budweiser/miller/coors/etc. than something regional or microbrewed. I just havn't found any micros or regionally brewed beers that I enjoy.

For a good regional porter, Shiner Bock out of TX. For a lager, the best American would have to be Yuenglueng.

PS. Drank some Czeck BOOM porter last night. Nasty shit.

Not a huge beer fan.

I do like Fat Tire and a honey blonde beer is nice from microbreweries like Gordon Birche (sp) and Two Rows brewery here in Houston.

I like rootbeer even better.

There is a Gordon Birche here in DC. Very good stuff. Their taps are chrome and have a coating of frost on them.

Just realized I mentioned Shiner twice. Well, three times now. heh

On the international circuit I really only like japanese or mexican beers. Dos XX Amber rocks.

The first Gordon Birche I went to was in Pasedena CA. We sat on the wood deck/patio and ate/drank while watching "The Maltese Falcon" being projected onto a nearby white brick building from the vacant lot next door. Was like a neighborhood movie night - WAY COOL. Good company, good food, good beer, and good entertainment.

How can you bring up Michigan beer without saying Bell's? Bell's Oberon is one of the best beers out of a tap I've ever had and the Winter White Ale can get me completely faced, like only a few beers (or barley wines) can.

Asahi is a good beer on a nice summer day, real crisp. I used to have a thing for Sam Adams, but he didn't appreciate me so I had to cut that relationship off. Heinken is the all purpose beer.

Of course, I could really go for a nice wheat beer. Fuck Blue Moon, get Upland Wheat or Arcadia, both are better and not made by Coors. Add an orange and it's an experience :)

I sound like an advertisement lol.

Any beers from Victory brewery (in PA).

HopDevil IPA is incredible, it's won a bunch of awards in the US. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Loves me some IPAs.

Golden Monkey is a tripel bock, both of these beers are available now in parts of Europe, as they've done well in beer festivals over there.

I'm not a big fan of stout, but Victory's Stormking is fantastic, better than Guiness. I could drink this stuff for breakfast.

Not to offend anyone, but a lot of the usual white beers taste way too much the same to me (straight from the bottle) and, therefore, it's always Guinness Stout.

Guinness Draught has a pretty distinct taste to it as well: If you've never drank a bottle of beer in your life, or have and still care to read my worthless opinion, the little rocket widget does some Harry Potter-style magical shiznit to the blend

Most all American beer(and Canadian!) is pisswater, plain-and-simple. I am not a huge beer fan and honestly havent found too many brewed on this side of the pond that I care for. There was a micro-brewery in I think..SC? maybe it was Virigina but it had a few interesting ones. Guinness extra stout on tap is always a fav(even with the widget the can doesnt taste the same:( and bottles just ruin it.) As for Belgian beer... Hoegarrden I always love with an orange slice, its nice for summer and the only Belgian witbier that ive found in the US I like.(Blue moon is just crap) To continue with the Belgian...ive found a few strong dark ales that are nice, also Lambic is a huge favorite. Kriek, Pomme especially, Pêche, and Framboise.(the ones that are real fruit and actually Lambic based, the stuff with brown ale and fruit syrup is nasty!) Now..my hardcore love...Bavarian Dunkel, Dunkelweizen, and some Doppelbochs. <3

I don't like most American beer. Fucking close to water is right. Coors I could drink if I wanted something like iced tea but weaker. Guinness is a truly superior tap beer. Back in my bar maid days, it was the best seller. Harp (ale) has a delightful bite. Sleeman's Cream Ale is dandy cold on a hot day. Keith's light is a staple in my fridge. It isn't the best ale out there, but it's hometown proud Nova Scotia pale ale. And it's reasonably priced. Ooo, nearly forgot Kilkenny. Yum. Rickard's Red is fine on tap as well.

Props to all the New Belgium Brews (Especially "Triples"). I just wish they would make their way East so I could pick some up at IU. It's a pain lugging it back/forth from Colorado. Although, I did heard a rumor they may be opening their gates as far east as Chicago.

That's not a black and tan... that's a half and half. :) Black & Tans are so named because it's half Irish half English. There are a good number of other drinks with unique names... The "Irish American" is Guinness poured over Budweiser... but personally I feel that's a waste of Guinness.

I dislike the classification of "American" beer... there are plenty of american beers that are fantastic, Sam Adams of course comes to mind, but all the microbreweries are great... Magic Hat, Ten Penny produce some good beer too, no reason to group them together with stuff like bud, coors, miller, red dog, etc.

...

It's like the coriolis effect, in England gravity is reversed.

In america you still pour the Guinness in first and then the ale/lager over it, it then settles to the bottom. If they're not doing it like that where you're getting yours, they're doing it wrong.

Celephais
08-30-2007, 05:51 PM
I take that back... sorta (cause it's Wiki and it also still says "correct" way):

To prepare a Black and Tan in the American way, first fill a glass halfway with the ale, then add the Guinness Draught (from the can, bottle, or tap). The top layer is best poured slowly over an upside-down tablespoon placed over the glass to avoid splashing and mixing the layers. A specially designed black-and-tan spoon is bent in the middle so that it can balance on the edge of the pint-glass for easier pouring.

In the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom), the correct way of preparing a Black and Tan is considered to be to pour half a pint of dark stout into a pint glass and then top up with draught bitter, so that both beers are thoroughly mixed together.

So my neighbor and I have started a ritual of having a different untried imported round of beer after each weight lifting session.

We're on round 2 of the beer wind down. Here's the take thus far.

1. Lucifer - belgium beer (best to date, has faint fruity aftertaste)
2. Duvel - belgium beer (full bodied very hopsy)

I'll put that on the list. There are some good mentions of some german/belgian beers back near page 2 of this thread (my page2).

I like the extra kick the imported has with the higher alcohol content.

The Lucifer was like 11 bucks a 4 pack. I grabbed a 750ml bottle of Duvel tonight for 9 bucks at Specs. That duvel is freaking expensive. Not that I can complain since I replaced my now empty bottle of Anniversario rum cost me 25 bucks for a 750ml. That is the shiz of shiznit right there mano.

I love Sapporo and Kirin. If you are ever in Japan buy some Kirin Light and actually read everything on the can. Hilarious.

Anyway, I ran into one of the owners of Clipper City Brewers out of Baltimore last night. Great guy with a great wife and they LOVE beer. I’ve met them on several occasions and they are such great friendly happy smiley people.

I told him I tried their Hang Ten from their Heavy Seas line. Well, get this. He tells me to stash a four-pack for one year because it ages well. This shit is already delicious and 10%.

He said he would give me a bottle of 2007 at which point his wife laughed and exclaimed, “He must be hiding it from me!”

It would be awesome but I am not counting on it. It’s a very casual relationship. But you are damn straight I am buying a pack and stowing it for 09.

I should ask Sean2 where the best hiding places are because I am not sure I could wait that long.

Troegs makes some really good beer. The Mad Elf is one of the better seasonal around. Definitely check it out if you like good beer. Even if you like bad beer, this might be the one to convert you. They also have a double bock that is fantastic.

For my money, Bear Republic (Racer 5 IPA, Hop Rod Rye, Big Bear Black Stout, Racer X Double IPA) is the best craft brewery in the states -- but places like Troegs are good, too.

Magic Hat is also pretty good. It's not the best craft beer around, but it does a great job of being not-bad. Magic Hat #9 is my favorite of their beers in circulation. A friend in LA had one of their Russian Imperial Stout (Thumbsucker) cellared and we tried it before we left LA. It was fantastic.

I agree, I happen to like Sam Adams (especially a few of the seasonal brews), but I just had to point out that it's kind of funny to dump on Miller for being "American piss" and then refer to Sam Adams as a real beer in the next sentence. I mean, Christ, the beer is named Sam Adams.

There is probably more good American beer than bad actually.

What is considered “bad” American beer by some are the top three: Coors, Miller and Budwieser. They must have been good at some point or they wouldn’t be the top three. These days it may be a matter of “brand”. Like people who choose Absolut over Sky.

But there are tons of great American beers out there. Personally I think Yuengling out of PA is a damn fine low price point domestic on tap or bottled. Canned not so much.

Shiner out of Texas, Dogfish out of Delaware, Clipper City out of Baltimore, Sierra Nevada out of Cali, and the list goes on and on.

I bet you can find outstanding local brews in every state of the union.

A friend of mine and I used to play Beeropoly, a take on Monopoly we came up with a long time ago.

Bascically you play Monopoly, but anytime you have to pay for anything (rent, luxury tax, etc.), you have to drink.

If you landed on someone's property and they had a house(s) or hotel, you had to drink once for having to pay, and then an additional drink for each house. If you land on a hotel, you have to shotgun a beer.

If you land on Free Parking, you can make up pretty much any rule you want, within reason, and you can't alter the drinking rules (i.e. you can't make someone down a 12 pack for having to pay you rent).

One example of our drunken stupidity ended up with us having to use our shoe as a beer holder when you'd drink for the rest of the game once, so when we'd have to drink we'd have to remove our shoe, put the can/bottle in the shoe, and then drink. Then you can remove the beer and put your shoe back on if you want.

If you go to jail, you have to get up and walk a straight line both ways for about 10 feet. If you don't fuck up, you go to "Just Visiting" instead of being in jail and you get to roll again. If you fuck it up, then you go to jail (and drink), and can either try and roll doubles to get out, try walking the straight line again to get out (which if you fuck it up you have to drink again, plus you're still in jail), or just pay the $50 to get out, which results in another drink since you're paying.

In the rare instance you get one of those Community Chest/Chance cards that make you pay $50 or whatever to all other players, you have to take a drink for each person you pay.

That's pretty much the basics. No matter how slow the game starts out, everyone is guaranteed to be hammered by the time the game is over, assuming you even make it that far.

I also highly recommend you play a version that does the money counting for you, for obvious reasons. They even have a board game version now that uses debit cards instead of paper money. We always just fired up the NES version. Maybe we'll do it again this week. It's been a few years.

Either way, it's a blast and something everyone should try at least once.

Beautiful light amber pour. Champagne bubbles, almost Guinness thick head. Sweet melon nose notes, orange rind citrus, coastal air.

A little sweet at start but bitter on the finish with great malt flavor. Small bubble carbonation is very smooth, silky. Orange rind finish. Maybe a little clove.

ABV 8.5.

Described as a barley wine. I know one of the partners of CCBC and he recommended it if I could find the 2007 batch. Just so happens I found some dusty bottle at an out of the way place.

Rich dark amber color, on the redder side. Fine carbonation, and head which does not last long but leaves a thin layer of suds on the top and rim of the glass. Cherry, apricot nose, slightly sweet tongue but balanced by warmth and barley, a little chocolate malt.

Outstanding.

ABV 10% but really this is a beer to sip, not chug.

Well, its good, but not that good honestly.

If you like wheats drop a Hamilton on a Samuel Adams Imperial White 4pk. Great wheat ale but be careful of the sediment.

If thats too much for your taste just grab a 12 of Natty for six bones.

I'm not a big wheat beer fan, heh. Wheat anything is for a particular palette, one which I do not possess, unfortunately. Fortunately, any place that typically sells a wheat has something else of equal deliciousness for my standards.

Sierra Nevada is really growing as a company. I’ve really enjoyed their Celebration Ale, the new Summerfest, Torpedo and Bigfoot.

Today its Kellerweis. Not crazy about it. Has a bubblegum aftertaste.

I visited my wife, who is teaching a summer session for UCLA in Paris, over the 4th of July.

We found this amazing craft beer store. (http://www.caveabulles.fr/)

The owner spoke fluent english and was quite knowledgable about craft beers in France. The prices were outrageously low (6.40 euro for 750 ml; 4.20 euro for 330 ml). We walked out with a suitcase full of beer for 60 euro. Amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone who is visiting. Bring a hard-case suitcase to bring beers back.

Now I want to know what that real expensive red beer is.

The Dirty Hoes I drink may be unique to the particular place in the area that I live in. Just like with cheese-steaks.

But the real beautiful thing about Hoegarden topped with Guinness is not so much the flavor... its like walking around drinking a lava lamp.

It's Hoegaarden with a splash of Lindeman's Framboise. The bar that does it near me is an Irish bar too which is why I think this is the real Dirty Hoe because they pretty much put Guinness in anything, but not in this case. Try it out, it's really good.

Edit: A google search seems to show that Dirty Hoe can reference either Hoegaarden with Guinness or Hoegaarden with Framboise.

Starting my 48 hours of free time with a 12 pack sampler of Starr Hill out of Charlottesville, VA.

4 fun flavors! The Love, Jomo Lager, Amber, and Pale.

The Love. Unfiltered wheat hefeweizen. Unlike the Kellerwies from two weeks ago... this one is much more palatable. Closer to a Shiner hefeweizen.

Jomo Lager. The gift of great beer. Decent enough but nothing really special.

Amber, nothing special.

Pale, pretty good actually.

nice list!! i put down some notes. some of those are some pretty goddamned awesome bevvies. And only 140 miles from my office!!

edit: i clearly have very little going on in the office today.

Currently on tap:
Well's Bombadier- decent bitter, but can sometimes be overpoweringly sweet.
Heavy Seas Loose Cannon- standard IPA. nothing to write home about, but definitely drinkable.
Pilsner Urquell- meh
Sly Fox Hop Project- wow. i've had this once (out of Philly, I think), and it's definitely memorable. very good. lingering aftertaste. wish i could have one right now.
Paulaner Hefe-Weizen- I'm not much for wheat beer, but this is one of the better ones, I feel. Not sure I would even spoil it by adding fruit.
Arrogant Bastard- see comments above
Waschusetts Blueberry- never had it
Hoegaarden- standard
Hobgoblin- don't like brown ale that much. never had it.
Yuengling- philly piss
Stella Artois- standard
Guinness- standard
Rogue Dead Guy- one of my faves. a lot of flavor
Bud Light- die
Lagunitas IPA- palatable, if barely.
DogFish Head 60 Minute IPA- a pussy version of the 90-minute and 120-minute
Ithaca Apricot Wheat- this is, in a word, pisswater. it tastes like a fruit roll-up that's been shoved up someone's ass.
Victory Hop Deavil- Hopdevil is money. My rogue's name is Hopdevil. That is how much I love this beer. That is all.
Middle Ages Wailing Wench- never had it
Sierra Nevada- good beer if you want some flavor and plan on drinking a lot
Smuttynose Old Brown Dog- don't like brown ale that much. never had it.

Bottled Beer:
3 Philosophers- i never liked quad beers. they were always too full-bodied for me. almost like drinking a milkshake.
Bodingtons- meh
Bud- meh
Corona- double meh
Dogfish 90 Minute IPA- quite enjoyable, and deceptively strong
Duvel- meh
Hebrew Messiah- meh
Heinekin Light- urine meh
Hofbrau Lager- i've had it, but i don't remember the taste. that should tell you something.
Ithaca Apricot Wheat- pisswater in a bottle instead of a pint glass
Long Trail Double Bag- never had it
Middle Ages Syracuse Pale- i seem to recall this being a fairly flavorless APA, but not terrible
Miller Light- meh
Monty Python Holy Ail- I drank this as a joke once, and the joke was on me. Tastes like copper ass.
O'Douls- really?
Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout- i hate oatmeal stout. to each his/her own.
Sea Dog Blueberry- never had it
Smirnoff- jesus tap-dancing christ
Twisted Tea- your slip is showing
Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot- here's an example of "just because the alcohol content is high, doesn't mean it tastes good." this is something like 11 or 12% ABV, and it's not good. Unbelievably sweet and almost cringe-inducing.
Woodchuck Cider- There you go, Anticor
Phin & Matt's- never had it
Youngs Dirty Dick- never had it
