McMennimans Brewing Ruby....that is all.
Just got back from this store that has the most incredible collection of beers I have ever seen. A bit pricey at $5-9 a 12 oz. bottle but shelves and shelves of brews from all over the country and world.
I found a steal of a deal though. $8.99 for a three pint sampler of Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout, Pale Ale, and Nut Brown with an authentic glass. They all chillin like villains for later.

Got a hold of some Bell's Hopslam and its a damn fine IPA. If you can get some and you love the huge hoppy beers this is the one. Grabbed Hoptimum too but have not got a chance to try it. I've heard is pretty solid.
I bought a bottle of Sam Adams Infinium... the whole champagne/beer brewed with that company in Germany.
At $22 its not cheap for four glasses... and it is def more like a champagne than a beer. Very dry, fine bubbles, no citrus, or any kind of fruits really. Very bland. Nice bottle and it is 10% ABV, but really? Blah.

I'm going to Total Wine and Spirits today... it's a place where you can create your own 6 packs of beer from singles. They have a huge selection of different beers from all over the place.. I plan on getting a couple 6s for a friend's birthday and picking up a 6 or 2 for myself of different oatmeal stouts and dark beers.

Tried Dogfish Head "Theobroma". From the label "Ale brewed with natural flavors (honey, cocoa nibs, cocoa powder, ancho chilies and ground annatto). Theobroma or 'Food of the Gods' is a recreation of the premier chocolate beverage of the Americas..."
I was thinking that it would be a darker ale with a big, spicy chocolate taste. Well, that wasn't even close. It was a very light colored ale with absolutely zero chocolate or spicy taste.. it was very fruity and light, almost like a wine. Pretty forgettable to be honest.

When I lived in London, the pub I frequented most often served only Samuel Smith beer. The 20 oz. imperial pints averaged a little less than two pounds, about $3.25 back then. Every time I pay $8 for a bottle of Amstel Light at some shitty NYC hotel bar, I rage silently.

One of my favorite beers is a Black and Tan (1/2 glass Guinness floating on 1/2 glass of Bass) or Half and Half (Guinness and Harp). If you are looking for just a stout or darker beer, then you are probably better off going to a place like a Tap House or World of Beer where they have selections that are more than the typical BMC. Some of my personal favorite darker beers:
Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter - Bottle only in US
Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout - Bottle only in US
Young's Double Chocolate Stout
Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock
Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout

Depends on where you live but Founders Breakfast Stout is outstanding if you can get it. Old Rasputin, Oscar Blues Ten Fidy and Storm King are great Russian Imperial Stouts. Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Stout and Maduro Brown from Cigar City. Terrapin makes a good Coffee Oatmeal Stout.

Southern Tier is relatively new i think 2005-06 out of Lakewood NY they have a pretty extensive list of 22oz bottles which are all pretty solid brews. Mocha, Java, Creme brulee, and Choklat *All stouts are all very good. l If you like Pumpkin ale their seasonal Imperial PumpKing Ale is outstanding by far one of the tastiest beers I have ever drank.

Back liked it, and I think someone else liked it. I wasn't so thrilled, but I predicted Rob might like it based on some of his statements.
Looking back, I didn't realize I had spent so much time on pumpkin beer last year, but it was fun. I plan to do it again this year.
Got the Southern Tier Imperial Pumpking on my way home tonight. It's good, although I'm pretty sure its sweetness will offend Rob. It's by far the most pumpkin tasting of the pumpkin beers I've tasted this season, and I've been going through a bunch. After the Smuttynose, this might be my favorite so far.
I also got a bottle of the Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin (not to be confused with the Pumpkinhead), which I'll probably try tomorrow.*
Looking back on the pumpkin beers, I think Rob might like the Dogfish Head Punkin. It's one of the least 'pumpkin' sweet beers I recall.
Ranking so far...
1) Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin
2) Smuttynose Pumpkin
3) Southern Tier Imperial Pumpking Ale
4) Post Road Pumpkin Ale
5) Fisherman's Pumpkin Stout
6) Dogfish Head Punkin
7) Blue Moon Harvest Moon Pumpkin
8) Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale
Obviously I'm not much of a beer snob, I just have my own preferences.
*EDIT: I just finished the bottle of Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin, and it's taken the new number 1 spot. Again, probably too sweet for Rob, but overall this was the best I've had so far. I like my beer ice cold, but this beer really got better as it warmed up. The alcohol content is high (9%, like the Pumpking), but you really don't even notice. Overall, good beer. I wish I could buy a case of the stuff, but a) it's expensive and b) it doesn't come in cases. Motherfucker.

I was a volunteer steward today for a beer competition. My table judged 6 Robust Porters and 2 Baltic Porters. Winner was a Baltic porter with an average score of 41/50. Of the 8 beers, the judges pushed 2 on to the finals.
Worst beer was the other Baltic that literally tasted and smelled like a band aid... scored 20/50. Judges said that it was probably because that person probably used chlorine to sanitize with and didn't rinse properly.
There was really only 2 beers that were even drinkable in my opinion.. which makes me feel good about the beers I've been brewing.

You won't really. Most of what happens in the secondary fermentation is letting shit settle and letting the beer clarify. The big fermentation happens in the first 4-5 days in your primary.

It is made by the Funky Buddha in Boca Raton, Fl. They do not distribute or bottle it right now. It's only on tap at the bar or when they tote it to beer fests. They will on occassion fill growlers to regulars but even that is not guaranteed. They have some excellent beer out of there with a ginger base one that solid as well.
PB did you get a chance to sample anything from Tequesta Brewing? They just opened and have had some solid brews.

Got my hands on some 21st Amendment Monk’s Blood (http://www.21st-amendment.com/beer/monks-blood).
21st Amendment founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan traveled to Belgium to develop the recipe for this special beer, visiting small, traditional breweries in the hop fields of west Flanders, not far from the famous Trappist abbey of Westvletren. Monk’s Blood is designed to pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous desserts or just by itself, in a Belgian tulip glass, with a good book by the fire.
They use cans which I normally think of being “cheap” but let me tell you what. This beer is legit.

Why would anyone making craft beer ever, EVER use aluminum cans?

I have to admit I agree however their back in black is a solid brew. I'll have to get my hands on monks blood. Also I heard they make a watermelon seasonal summer brew I plan on keeping my eyes out for that as well.

Why would anyone making craft beer ever, EVER use aluminum cans?
From what I have heard it allows less light into the brew and is actually cheaper than bottling.
Thats just what I have heard. From a taste standpoint I doubt anyone could tell the difference based on my own extensive research.

Lets be honest Guinness pulls it off and I prefer to buy it in a can and pour it myself rather then drinking it out of the bottle. Also sometimes I buy yuengling lager/black and tans in cans easier to pack a cooler.
On that note...
Trying Butternuts Beer and Ale sampler tonight. Moo Thunder Stout, Snapperhead IPA, Porkslap Pale Ale and Heinnieweisse Weissebier all in cans.
Pouring them into a glass and the stout is righteous.

Makes sense from a cost standpoint.. but I'm least likely to try a new beer from a can than I would if it were packaged in a bottle. Call me a beer snob. :(
If you like stout try some Old Dominion (http://www.olddominion.com/) Oak Barrel Stout. Really smooth. Does not have a burnt hickory taste like some stouts.
Bought a sample 12 pack from Great Divide Brewing (http://www.greatdivide.com/) out of Denver and really liked everything. The Samurai rice ale was outstanding and I found a 20 oz. of the Espresso Oak Aged Yeti Stout which was also good.

Sam Adams > Budweiser/Miller/Coors/Michelob... but that's pretty much it. They may have brought about a new appreciation for "craft" beer, but I would put a real craft beer up against SA any day.

Did the Saint Somewhere Brewery work today.. and while it was a fun experience, it wasn't at all what I was expecting.
First of all, the "brewery" was located inside a storage facility and clearly Bob (the owner) doesn't worry about organization and cleanliness. It was a fucking disorganized cluster fucking mess. Unfinished walls, debris all over the place, floors that weren't cleaned in what looks like 5 years... just a fucking mess.
Basically, we had 6 people there as volunteers. One sanitized bottles, one used this bottle filler:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e6/belike53/IMG_0151.jpg
One put a cork in the bottles, one put a cork collar on the bottle, one tightened the collar with a drill and one put on labels. We ended up bottling 1109 bottles for the day and we rotated around to do different jobs. Like I said, it was definitely fun.. but nothing like I expected from a place that advertises itself as a brewery.
Here's a pic of the fermenters.. I think he had 3 like this one and 2 smaller ones..
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e6/belike53/IMG_0153.jpg
and the mash tun (left) and kettle (right)
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e6/belike53/IMG_0152.jpg
There were a few homebrewers there so after we were done, we sampled a bunch of small batch beer as well as some of the same type of beer we bottled. One was an apple cider that couldn't be easier to make. You basically take 5 gallons of good apple cider with no preservatives in it, add 2 packets of champagn yeast and stir it up. 3 months later, hard cider.. that was sparkling clear and actually drier than I would have thought.
All in all though.. a good day.

Between green bottled and brown bottled beer?
The amount of ultraviolet light that they let in. I am not an expert on it by any means, but I think it has to do something with the light breaks down the hops and releases some sort of sulfur compound, giving it a skunky taste. So long story short, brown bottles protect better than green which in turn protect better than clear.
Finally, if you are going to spend the time to make the beer yourself, protect it with the brown bottles.

That's exactly right.
Now, some people actually desire that skunky taste in some of their beers... Molsten, St. Pauli Girl, Heineken, etc... Personally, I'll take a SPG over a Bud or Coors.. but I tend to not like that skunky taste/smell so I generally shy away from anything in a green bottle.

This afternoon I tried 21st Century’s collaboration with an Oregon company called “Allies Won the War”. Brewed with dates this is an amazingly good amber ale. Spicy, smooth, great winter beer.
Also had some Old Rasputin stout later. This is from North Coast Brewing Company in California. Smokey, chickory, thick body stout. Yum!
Ending the evening with Modelo cans. Cheap and so much better than the swamp water that is Miller, Bud or Coors.

I had some of the Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout last weekend and it was truly phenomenal. Last night I picked up a four pack of Diesel by Six Point. It's a 6.2% ABV American Stout with a really smooth body, some chocolate and coffee notes but also a really hop-forward taste as it's a wet-hop ale. Kind of treads close to being a Black IPA, but whatever you call it, I enjoyed it. It also comes in 16oz cans and I am a huge proponent of canned craft beer. Good stuff.

F YOU!
Anyway... trying the new Bud Black Crown. It is 6.0 ABV but still just a step up from crappy Bud regular. Inbev is trying desperately to get Americans to drink better beer but it seems they can't. We've got some pretty kick ass craft beer happening right now.
Still, it was smart of them to by AB so that every honkey tonk across America now has a Stella tap next to the Bud Light tap.
21st Amendment Brewery's "Lower De Boom". Delicioso barleywine. They sell it in four packs of 8.4 oz. containers which I appreciate since they are 11.4% ABV. You don't want to chug this stuff like Bud Light. Well, maybe you want to, but make sure you have a place to pass out if you do!
21st Amendment has a pumpkin beer this year called "He Said". It comes in a four pack. You get two Belgian style triples and two Baltic style porters. Both are very good but I like the porters better. They both taste more like beer than pumpkin, but you do get some of that pumpkin flavor, and I detect some spices, as well. 8.2% ABV so definitely not chug-a-lug beer. Sip by the fire in your favorite glass.

It is a delicious porter. You should NOT play beerpong with this beer though... and certainly not flip cup or baseball.

Pretty happy to see that this season, the pumpkin ales are coming in all sorts of styles. Usually, it's a pumpkin lager or ale.. this year it's an IPA, porter, imperial stouts, etc...
And hell yea, my favorite brewery made #1 on this list:

I think it was a CNN article this week that said pumpkin sales are up like 34% in the past decade, due in large part to the popularity of pumpkin beers. It really depends on how you feel about beer. Personally, I like some of the pumpkin beers. For some people, Bud and Miller Light is as flavorful as they want their beers to taste, and that's fine. On the other end, you've got the snobs (I mean that in a nice way, I was more of one in the past myself) who wouldn't think of touching anything like Bud or Miller. As with all things in life, balance is key and I think being somewhere in between is best. Try some pumpkin beers or some craft beers if you go to a good bar that has some, but for fucks sake when you're mowing the yard or eating chicken wings, just crack something that's cold and refreshing.

Personally I gravitate towards hard cider these days. I find it far better than just about any beer and the number of types available and the quality has skyrocketed over the past few years. Had my first one in England, which was Strongbow on tap, and was amazed to see it showing up in the states as an import several years ago. Now they've reformulated it for export and it isn't nearly as good as it used to be.
We hit a local bar every Thursday that has an amazing selection of beer, so I'll make it a point to try a pumpkin brew and see what all the fuss is about!
This is what I saw.

Guy at the shop recommended Cluster's Last Stand collaboratively brewed by Smutty Nose and Stone. American IPA, 8.3%. Pretty damn good. Not overly hoppy. Not too sweet. Clean taste and finish. I'd recommend it.

I like alcoholic beverages, from beer to shots.
Lets talk about beer.
American beer. American beer is Budwieser, Coors, Miller and all that. And while it is a decently cost beer, they do not really shine in the taste department. You have to realize these beers came from the same place. The independent brewery.
The Independant brewers here still make the kind of beer that the American corporate beers came from. Yes, Americans would not have beer if it weren’t for the [germans] Europeans... or Africans.
My home state makes an awesome bottle bock. Shiner Bock.
Being a big fan of bocks, and Guinness, I also like a lager on the warmer days. Especially a Sapporo or an OB.
I'm not sure I understand you. "American Beer" = Budweiser, Coors, etc.? I'm pretty sure American beer these days also includes a nearly endless variety of craft brews - something for everyone!
I really enjoy Dogfish Head Brewery, New Belgium Brewery, and honestly there are so many with such a staggering variety - including outlandish flavors you wouldn't normally associate with beer. Don't get me wrong. I absolutely love a lot of those old school European breweries that have been doing it the same way for hundreds of years, but American beer is not defined by Budweiser and Coors these days! Hit up a brew fest and get yourself a taste of what American beer is all about!
BTW, I like Shiner bock, too!
Edit: Oh is this one of those old threads that keeps coming back? Just noticed the 75 pages of posts following LoL
