Tonight its Otter Creek sampler out of Vermont.
Copper Ale, Otter Summer and Pale Ale... three really tasty beers. Summer is a lightest and most refreshing. Pale Ale is nice and hoppy. Amber is really flavorful and complex.

I used to drink that shit by the stein at $4 per stein. Stein = 36 oz.
Two-hearted Ale, from nearby Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo, MI is a better IPA, IMO.
Maybe I just drank so much of the swill while I was in college (in Holland, MI) that I'm prejudiced against it.
Nice. Around here you can find Dogfish Head 60 Minute on draft which is really good IPA.

Yeah its a skunkfest and will bring you to your knees.
Having said that, there are Dogfish Ale houses around the VA, MD area where you can get everything on draft (I’d recommend Lawnmower) and good pub food (again, I would recommend the brats for this time of year with the Lawnmower).
Rockville (Gaithersburg) and Falls Church of all fucking places.
Abita Pecan Harvest Ale.
Great seasonal amber out of Covington Louisiana.
Peach nose... light amber in color, big bubbles, great balance of tart and hop. Pecan comes through in the finish. Just amber enough for a chilly fall day.

I missed this because I don't usually read the threads where Backrash is mostly talking to himself, but yeah they do. I love their heaping house salads, pretzels, and turkey on challah with lemon mayo. nomnom
Only problem I have with them is how fucking crowded they get, especially on weekends.

You know, I tried some of this last year when my local liquor store had a BUILD YOUR OWN FOUR-PACK MICROBREW EXPLOSION BONANZA, and I was a little disappointed. Big fan of pumpkin pretty much anything, but I think all the spice was a bit too much. I think I might have also been eating a pizza or something when I tried it, and that wouldn't have been a good pairing if so.
Could also just be too accustomed to ringing in fall with Sam Octoberfest.

If anyone is gonna be in Western MA I recommend trying the Pittsfield Brew Works.
The Gerry Dog Stout is an awesome oatmeal stout, goes great with any sort of stew, bangers and mash, etc.
The IPA and cask beers are awesome too. Usually a couple german beers and then seasonal beers. This season was raspberry and apricot but the fall beers are really hop based and tasty.
Anyway. It's a great place to get a local dinner plus locally brewed beer. A sampler platter of all the beers is the same price as getting just one glass of beer so it's worth it.

Went to dogfish head yesterday. I've been drinking there stuff for awhile but just never made it down to the brewery. Had their pumpkin ale, stout, and of course their 90 minute IPA. Also had Pangaea, some beer that they claim has an ingredient from each continent, (Antarctica supplied the water, I asked). It was terrible.

Not really anything in particular to be honest.. and even if there was it would have to be exceptional for me to bother remembering what it was.
We went to World of Beer Sat afternoon, specifically to have these seasonal beers. We probably sampled 10-12 different beers.. the one I liked the most was a Belgium abbey style ale called Christmas Ale or something that came in a big wine bottle.

Raison d'Etre is what I tried. Something about it turned me off. I like hoppy beers, but I think the raisins or something just made me go 'bleh'. I actually popped open the last one just now, to remind myself why I wasn't thrilled. Feeling still in tact.
I do plan on trying their 60, 90 and 120, but probably not for a few weeks.
EDIT: Also, I tried to sound hoity-toity and talk about the 'nose' and the 'notes of Belgian sugars', but realized I just don't have those sort of feelings for beer. It's either tasty, alright, meh, or piss.

Aged 9,000 Years, Ancient Beer Finally Hits Stores (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128587208&ps=cprs)
Dogfish Head brewery is known for making exotic beer with ingredients like crystallized ginger or water from Antarctica, so it might not sound surprising that one of its recent creations is a brew flavored simply by grapes and flowers. It's not the recipe that makes this beer so special; it's where that recipe was found: a Neolithic burial site in China.
Chateau Jiahu is a time capsule from 7,000 B.C., but to hear Dogfish Head owner Sam Calagione talk about what beer was actually like back then, it's not the kind of thing that makes you say "Hey, pass me another ice-cold ancient ale!"
"Probably, all beer thousands of years ago — to our modern palates — would have tasted spoiled," Calagione says. "In fact, in a lot of hieroglyphics, people are shown drinking beer using straws because they were trying to avoid the chunks of solids and wild yeast."
So how do you go from "chunks of wild yeast" to a beer that you can get at your local store? You don't start with a brewery. You start with Dr. Patrick McGovern.
EnlargeCourtesy Patrick McGovern
The ancient recipe for Chateau Jiahu was decoded from molecular data found in pots from a Neolithic burial site in the Henan province of northern China.
Scraping The Bottom Of The Beer Barrel
McGovern is a biomolecular archaeologist at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology. He studies fermented beverages — otherwise known as booze — by analyzing the ancient pots that once held them.
"We use techniques like infrared spectrometry, gas chromatography and so forth," he explains. McGovern helps Dogfish Head revive long-dead brews by figuring out what used to be inside the ancient pottery he comes across.
About 10 years ago, he set out to find some of this primordial crockery on a trip to China. In one town, he found pottery from an early Neolithic burial site. The pieces were about 9,000 years old — as were the skeletons they were found with.
The Neolithic period, which began about 12,000 years ago, is thought to be about the time when humans started settling down, raising crops — and apparently getting a little tipsy. McGovern suspects that once humans stayed put, it didn't take them long to discover the fermentation process that led to the world's first alcohol.
The molecular evidence told McGovern the vessels from China once contained an alcoholic beverage made of rice, grapes, hawthorn berries, honey and chrysanthemum flowers.
"What we found is something that was turning up all over the world from these early periods," he says. "We don't have just a wine or a beer or a mead, but we have like a combination of all three."
Ancient Brews For Troubled Times
That's where Dogfish Head comes in. The Delaware-based brewery owns a tiny but respected sliver of the U.S. beer market, which Calagione says it earned by being a risk-taker. Dogfish and McGovern have produced other ancient beverages, including their Midas Touch brew, teased from pottery found in King Midas' 2,700-year-old tomb.
But, like Calagione says, Jiahu is different. It's "the oldest-known fermented recipe in the history of mankind."
Even though I am not drinking like I used to I love the hell out of this brewery. Dogfish rulez!

Why is everyone talking so GAY about beer!?
Researchers Find 2,000 Year-Old Beer Was Used as Medicine (http://www.care2.com/causes/real-food/blog/ancient-beer-recipe-supplied-antibiotics/)
During chemical analysis of human bones from Nubia dated between A.D. 350 and 550, Armelagos and Nelson found traces of tetracycline, an antibiotic still used to treat bacterial infections, including pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections, acne, and infections of skin, genital and urinary systems.
Armelagos and his fellow researchers believe the source of the antibiotic to be beer, a beverage regularly consumed by the Nubians. The grain used to make the fermented gruel contained the soil bacteria streptomyces, which produces tetracycline.

Dude, this wins the pumpkin beer contest as far as I’m concerned. I think somewhere up above someone suggested Southern Tier Chocolate Stout as a good beer and I wasn’t so crazy about it.

Coldfoot is actually a town at the arctic circle where the oil truckers running north to the coast stay over and get toasted before putting the tire chains on their rigs and rolling out into the tundra. There are no trees, just hills of frozen muskeg and when the wind blows -80 towards the end of January you dont turn your vehicle off because the metal parts on the inside will start to snap like twigs in the cold.

I tried the new Saison Du Buff from Stone last night. I typically like Saisons, and this was no different, bit it was almost too quirky for me.
Stone, Dogfish Head, and Victory have collaborated on a Saison recipe (which includes parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, etc) and each brewed it at their respective breweries. Cool idea.
I'm anxiously awaiting the Southern Tier Choklat (imperial stout), which comes out in Novemberish.

Gonna be trying some Southern Tier Pumking on tap Friday night at a local coal-oven pizza place. I love the fact that the joint is run by a beer-head. Looking forward to it because I love me some pumpkin beer, although I've heard this year's Pumking described as a bit overly sweet and syrupy.

I had a bottle of last year's Choklat a month or two ago and it was divine. Southern Tier has a cool little description on the bottle about how according to some ancient cultures, chocolate is "Food for the Gods", and this beer is exactly that. It's incredibly rich and chocolatey with notes of toasted marshmallow and a faint hint of coffee (their Mocha stout has even more coffee, logically, and their Java is a coffee monster).
Really anything with Victory, Stone, or Southern Tier on the label is a good life choice. Also Lagunitas and Dogfish Head. :) Beer owns.

Alaska seems appealing. (I'm being serious. I love cold weather.)

I know the great reputation of the Pumking, and have been wringing my hands for months in anticipation. Finally got a few bottles 1-2 weeks ago. Interesting that you say this years is overly sweet and syrupy, because those are my issues with it. It's great, but it's a bit heavy on the sweet/syrupy/flavor side. But alas, this is my first time trying the great Pumking, so it is all I know.
I actually like this one a lot, Shipyard's Smashed Pumpkin (not to be confused with Shipyard Pumpkinhead):

Dogfish Head's "Punkin" is pretty awesome, too.
I'm spending the majority of the weeks leading up to Halloween drinking pumpkin ales, watching horror movies, and playing games like Silent Hill, Alan Wake, etc. I love Fall in New England...

Yeah, I love the descriptions on the back of the Southern Tier bottles. Even better are the ones on the back of the Stone ones. Ruination, FTW.
That Southern Tier Choklat is one of the most impressive brews I have ever had. I bought the store out of them, and am now waiting for them to be released again (in November, I think).

Can anyone recommend a good Oatmel Stout?
I had an Oatmeal Stout at a local brewpub and it was one of the best I've ever had. It was a bit sweet (not too much), and you could really taste the rolled oats in there. Best of all, it had that amazing Guinness style creamy head (from nitro, I assume). It was sort of like a Guinness Drought, but replace that Guinness twang/sour/bitter aspect with mild sweetness and add rolled oats.
I've tried a few other Oatmeal Stouts but nothing has come close for me. Even more difficult than finding one that matches the flavor I want, is trying to find one with that awesome creamy head.
If anyone is curious, and lives in the area, it's the Oatmeal Stout at Milly's Tavern in Manchester, NH.
So... any recommendations?

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout is outstanding. It is not all that easy to find unless you have a good brew store near you. Fortunately for me my local store has 500 varieties in stock. I know at times you can find pretty decent beer selections at places like Total Wine, Traders Joe's etc. Another very good Oatmeal from is from Young's. If you find the Young's anywhere grab their Banana Bread Brew too. Its damn good.

Yeah, I've had Samuel Smith's. It's great, but not what I'm looking for. I want one that has less of a roasted malt flavor, a creamy head (think Guinness, whereas Samuel Smith is typical bubbly head), and overall smoother stout. I'd also like to taste the oats a bit more.
I haven't had Young's Oatmeal Stout... I will have to try that. I like their Double Chocolate stout, and I've heard good things about the Banana Bread one.

Found a bottle of the Choklat tonight. I asked if it was this years and there was some confusion amongst staff. Still, sounds like last years batch was pretty good so I am going to try it again. The last time I tried it it was chalky. Let you know as soon as it chills to a decent temp.
Meanwhile enjoying Sierra Nevada Torpedo. Super smooth extra IPA. This brewing company has really expanded its line. Every time I turn around there is another seasonal out and all of them so good. Tumbler is new this year. Great brown ale. There is also 22oz. corked Anniversary Ale that I have yet to try.

BrewDog, the Scottish brewery best known for its 32% ABV (alcohol by volume) Tactical Nuclear Penguin beer, is back at it with another beer that not only shatters their previous alcohol content record, but also claims the title of most expensive brew. Introducing 'The End of History', a 55% ABV beer that costs $765 per 12oz bottle AND COMES IN ITS OWN TAXIDERMIED KOOZIE.

I've been pretty disappointed in most of the pumpkin ales I've been trying this year, but I just finished a six-pack of Smuttynose and it was pretty good. Nice aroma but the pumpkin flavor isn't overpowering. It's also one of the first beers that I consciously noticed the lacing on.
I didn't care for the Dogfish Head, which is on Back's link-list there.

Got the Southern Tier Imperial Pumpking on my way home tonight. It's good, although I'm pretty sure its sweetness will offend Rob. It's by far the most pumpkin tasting of the pumpkin beers I've tasted this season, and I've been going through a bunch. After the Smuttynose, this might be my favorite so far.
I also got a bottle of the Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin (not to be confused with the Pumpkinhead), which I'll probably try tomorrow.*
Looking back on the pumpkin beers, I think Rob might like the Dogfish Head Punkin. It's one of the least 'pumpkin' sweet beers I recall.
Ranking so far...
1) Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin
2) Smuttynose Pumpkin
3) Southern Tier Imperial Pumpking Ale
4) Post Road Pumpkin Ale
5) Fisherman's Pumpkin Stout
6) Dogfish Head Punkin
7) Blue Moon Harvest Moon Pumpkin
8) Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale
Obviously I'm not much of a beer snob, I just have my own preferences.
*EDIT: I just finished the bottle of Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin, and it's taken the new number 1 spot. Again, probably too sweet for Rob, but overall this was the best I've had so far. I like my beer ice cold, but this beer really got better as it warmed up. The alcohol content is high (9%, like the Pumpking), but you really don't even notice. Overall, good beer. I wish I could buy a case of the stuff, but a) it's expensive and b) it doesn't come in cases. Motherfucker.

Not as expensive as the 30 year anniversary barley wine.
Estate is a completely organic ale. Though I would say it is closer to an IPA. Great color, fine carb, thick head, not sweet and def headier than your average gold lager. Very tasty.
The wax cover on the bottle cap is a poor choice. Messy and hard to dislodge unless you have a wine key at your disposal. Still... a cork would have been better, or even just foil on a cap.

"WHAT DID I DO?! WHY DO YOU HATE ME SO MUCH?!"
BotM is a good call. If there are breweries abundant near you, and if this is someone you could actually stand to be around for a weekend, you could do some brewery tours?

Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout out of Mendocino California. Unlike the Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Stout I tried the other day this is much less smoky. A bit more palatable with a more coarse carbonation. S’alright. The branding is cool. Ja comrade! Nosdrovya!

He seems to drink a lot of beer "the other day." It's fairly vague.
My days off are in the middle of the week so I explore the beer world on those days. And rarely is it ever just one type of beer. C’mon. Two at the very least.

Ha ha.
Had Southern Tier Chokolat on tap tonight. Its this independent Carolina BBQ place in a strip mall in suburban nowhere but damn do they have one hell of a tap line-up.
Along with that rarity they also had Troeg’s Mad Elf, Dogfish Chicory Stout, Flying Dog Double IPA, Sierra Nevada Celebration, Heavy Seas Smoke on the Water... and a few others I have not tried yet.
Carolina BBQ is a little hard and crunchy for my Texan taste but the baby backs with chipotle sauce rock and their baked beans chock full of brisket are awesome. Plus they have something I have not seen since my days in the southern states: hush puppies. Damn good ones at that.

Then you ate at a shit bbq place. Carolina BBQ is tender as fuck and fall-off-the-bone. And anyone who eats bbq with chipotle sauce should go fuck themselves with the business end of a baseball bat.
Chipotle? Why don't you throw some honey or peach in there? Really sweeten it up and totally deaden the flavor of the meat. And Texas BBQ licks ass.
Hush puppies rule.
edit: Never really liked the Heavy Seas. It's pretty tame for a smoked beer. Kind of mediocre. Flying Dog Double is fucking incredible, but will knock you on your ass if you're not careful (11%, I think?)
Uh... forget your Ritalin this morning? What does a fucking Nancy New Yorker know about BBQ anyway besides the rib tips you get at the local chinese food/stray animal shelter? I bet you don’t even know the business end of a bat anyway you provincial pompous pretentious pretard.
But please continue on your know-it-all-but-full-of-shit inner narrative. Its entertaining to those of us who live in the real world.

Yeah I agree the Heavy Seas is tame. Still... its better than Magic Hat. That shit is crap. Flying Dog is better. The Double IPA rocks and they have quite a few good brews. All of these are higher octane. The Troeg's Mad Elf is 11% and I would call it a cherry lambic though they do not.

This on the other hand. I think it might go the FULL RETARD. Have you ever left your city other than metaphorically through hiring prostitutes?
..........................................
For the rest of us.
Beer snobbery wise, I had a Cantillon Gueuze today. It made me smile. A beer doesn't always have to blast me with with alcohol to appeal.
Then again, I like almost any alcohol done with old oak caskets. Its one of my biggest current regrets about my family's winery. We've switched from old oak to new oak. Too tannic.

Woah there Wu-tang wannabe. I mention in one post that I don’t like Carolina style bbq and Rob flips out like I insulted his great grandmother and I’m the snob? Over react much boys?
None of our exchange was serious. At least mine weren’t. Just a good old fashioned flame war.
But about the winery... how does new oak add tannin? I thought that was a result of keeping the red grape skins longer into the fermentation process.
I prefer old oak myself but because of the smokier and vanilla notes.

It was more the uninformed dismissal combined with the 'you're just from New York' when that's a brush you could be pretty easily painted with.
There's both oak tannins and grape tannins. New oak adds a substantially greater amount of oak tannin.
Tannins are present in the bark of many trees and fruits, including oak trees. Oak tannins and grape tannins are substantially different, but wine that is aged in oak barrels, especially new oak barrels, is effected by oak tannins. Exactly to what extent oak tannins effect wine differently than grape tannins is not precisely known, and there is a great deal of scientific study going on in that area. Nonetheless, any wine aged in oak, or with oak chips is effected by oak tannins.

Was at Victory on Sunday and tried two in-house specials - their smokin' oats porter and their El dorado Pursuit Pale Ale. I'm not terribly knowledgable about porters but I really dug the smokin' oats - the name couldn't be more apt. Rich and smokey, but surprisingly drinkable.
The pursuit pale ale was phenomenal. I was expecting hoppier, but I'm also used to drinking hop bombs like Ruination and Loose Cannon. Very smooth. Gorgeous amber body. The head was about a finger worth of cream, thanks to the beer being on hand pump. Delish.
While there I scored a six-pack of Old Horizontal Barleywine Ale (I can't find it where I live in CT!) Cracked one last night - I figured how better to warm up on a brick-ass 12 degree night after a long day at work? I was not disappointed. Malty and makes no attempt to hide its 11% ABV, but it works well. It's pretty drinkable which is scary at its potency. I cut myself off at one.

On Monday night I attended a Sierra Nevada beer dinner at Coal House Pizza in Stamford, CT. My friends and I have become good friends with one of the owners, a huge beer head. We work with him on updating their beer menu and so forth. He does these brewery dinners now and then (Stone and Magic Hat in 2010). Here's something I wrote up to send a friend yesterday.
First course
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale w/ Coal House Blue Skies (cheese) pizza. Dough prepapred with 75% Sierra Celebration Ale/25% water mix. The beer dough made the pie a lot crispier and it was really tasty, nice hops flavor with the pie.
Second Course
Sierra Nevada Kellerweiss (hefeweissen) with Coal House chopped salad. Nothing too special here, I'm not a huge hefeweissen guy but it was solid.
Third Course
Sierra Nevada Torpedo (very hoppy IPA, basically their Pale Ale with less water) w/ Coal House beer-battered wings. AMAZING. Best pairing of the night, and I already loved their wings. I had never had Torpedo before but will work it into my IPA rotation now. The spicyness of the wings amplified the beer's hops by a factor of two at least. This killed it.
Fourth Course
Sierra Nevada Porter w/ meatballs in a cheese shell. This also ruled, see my pic of it on FB. I wasn't sure about the pairing but individually the porter and food were great. I'm not too knowledgable of porters but am getting there. Lot of carmel and coffee with some chocolate, which was rich and sort of neutralized the cheese taste.
Fifth Course
Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale w/ some kind of eggplant/vegetable/fruit cake thing. Celebration is one of my favorite beers of all time, and on draft it was perfect. I am not an eggplant dude but I gave it a whirl. I remain un-sold. The pairing did work well, though, because there is a lot of citrus/pine taste in Celebration which sat nicely with the fruit flavoring.
Sixth Course
Sierra Nevada Brewer's Reserve w/ Coal House riccotta cheesecake. One of the finest pieces of cheesecake I've EVER had, it was so delicious, even though I was full to bursting by this point. The Brewer's Reserve is a really interesting beer - I think it's listed as a combination of Celebration Ale, Porter, and Pale Ale… basically tastes like a hoppy barleywine with a bit of belgian tripel.

I had the Munich dark fresh from a cask last week and LOVED it. The candy sugar gave it such a nice subtle sweet kick. Two dudes from Harpoon brought it down here for a homebrew night event at Coal House (see my previous post). I have been meaning to check out their Chocolate stout (a well as Brooklyn's Black Chocolate) so thanks for the reminder there.

I love Sierra Nevada’s line. Everything they make is rich and flavorful. Try those big 30th anniversaries then have been putting out.

I have a bottle of the 30th Anniversary Dark Barleywine sitting in my fridge. Going to have it with a friend this Friday when I stop by his place to meet his newborn daughter. Seems like a good occasion for a special beer.
Beer pairing dinners rock and I need to go to more of them. Besides Coal House, there's a local restaurant called Gingerman that hosts them. They have a ton of good stuff on tap/bottle regularly.
I am jealous about the Heavy Seas dinner! Everything I've had of theirs rules. The Loose Cannon is one of my favorite beers.

Sam Ad I think has gone too far. Their Octoberfest used to be something to look forward to. Now its watery and they produce so many different seasonals I think they have lost focus.

When Bad Beers Happen to Good Breweries: The Case of Infinium (http://www.theatlantic.com/food/archive/2011/01/when-bad-beers-happen-to-good-breweries-the-case-of-infinium/69598/)
One of 2010's most anticipated releases was Infinium, a collaboration between BBC and Germany's Weihenstephan, the world's oldest brewery. For months beer-geek message boards popped with rumors: It had been three years in the making. It would taste of coriander and apricots. It would come with real pieces of Samuel Adams (or what's left of him) floating inside.
Jim Koch, the founder and beer-Yoda of Sam Adams, isn't humble about Infinium, which hit stores late last year. In interviews he bragged that entirely new brewing techniques had been developed, then cast aside in favor of even newer techniques. At an Infinium launch event he called it a "watershed moment" in American brewing, the creation of a new, champagne-style beer "with some of the dryness, the freshness, the crispness, the effervescence and acidity of champagne, but the texture and mouthfeel and structure of a beer." The result was dry, light on the palate, but also high in alcohol. Sounds great, right?
Infinium, ladies and gentlemen, bombed. Not only did it fail to make any top-ten lists, but many reviewers considered it one of the worst releases of the year. While it has its partisans, negative comments on Beer Advocate ran into the hundreds: "A drain pour." "The taste/yeast flavor completely through [sic] me off." "Infinium: Latin for disappointing?" Most took a shot at the price tag—$20 for a 750-milliliter bottle, well above a typical high-end craft beer. "Seems if I want champagne, I'd get a bottle of Korbel Natural ... not a Beer poser at twice the $," wrote one.

Some friends and I tried this at Cafe D'Alsace last week because the bartender was freaking out about it. I'm going to assume it's because he had been told to get rid of it as fast as possible.
It was...completely underwhelming. Not absolutely awful, but definitely not worth $30 for a 25 oz bottle. We complained to the bartender and got it for $15. I still feel cheated.
