Actually, the Bossier Parish School Board passed something requiring students to stand for the anthem or face punishment. Parkway is simply accepting the policy loudly. This is the Parish right across the river from me.

The only punishment they risk is being kicked off the football team, they aren't being suspended from school. Furthermore from what I have read they aren't requiring the students to place their hand over their hearts or recite the anthem, they are merely being told they must stand. I don't know what their original reasoning was for this, but the school can now argue that with the national controversy swirling around about this that the students are representing the school and therefore can choose to nip this shit in the bud.

Also, the only case I can find about censoring of school newspapers and media... the school only won because it WASN'T the school who censored it. It was the student editors.
See also Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District which states: "It can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate." and at issue in Tinker was "based upon an urgent wish to avoid the controversy which might result from the expression, even by the silent symbol of armbands, of opposition to this Nation's part in the conflagration in Vietnam." The Court held that for school officials to justify censoring speech, they "must be able to show that [their] action was caused by something more than a mere desire to avoid the discomfort and unpleasantness that always accompany an unpopular viewpoint," that the conduct that would "materially and substantially interfere with the requirements of appropriate discipline in the operation of the school." The Court found that the actions of the Tinkers in wearing armbands did not cause disruption and held that their activity represented constitutionally protected symbolic speech.
Gee, the Supreme Court said the Black Armbands, which was a form of student protest, was just dandy, and that school can't trounce on a student's 1st Amendment rights just because it might bring controversy and unpleasantness.

So far though, there are two Supreme Court cases there saying 1. A student can not be compelled by threat of punishment to render honors to the flag and 2. a student's 1st Amendment protections do not end at the school house door.

Playing sports is not a right anyone has. If an organization doesn't want you doing something during their event, don't do it or face the consequences. You're familiar with how this works... if a place doesn't want you to smoke weed, they can and will refuse employment or fire you if it's discovered while you've been employed. At least with these people wanting to protest and demonstrate, they can do that outside of the event all they want.

You're familiar with how this works... if a place doesn't want you to smoke weed, they can and will refuse employment or fire you if it's discovered while you've been employed. And actually, they have a higher crime rate too, by statistics too. I think we should take race completely out of the numbers and look at the data by social class/income and then see how that comes out.

I think what Gelston is getting at is, disproportionate to what? If you just look at race then yes you could reach that conclusion. If you look at reported crimes then you would find that they are statistically under represented. 13% of the population is responsible for 50% of the murders in the US.

Not to mention 43% of cop killers are black, which means blacks are much more likely to attack a police officer and pull a weapon on them which might explain some of why percentage/population wise blacks are killed more than whites.
The problem with this argument is people just look at raw numbers and arrive to the conclusion that cops are racist murderous thugs engaging in genocide (and being terrible at it considering they only manage to kill about 200 black people per year, even assuming they were all perfect little angels.)
People don't want to look at the specifics, like which race the cop was or which race the civilian was, who is more likely to attack and kill a police officer, were those civilians shot and killed pointing a weapon at the officer, were they trying to run the officer over with their car, were they reaching for the officer's weapon.
Because if we look at the specifics of each case the whole narrative falls apart. We have to keep things as vague as possible and if you want to discuss details then you're racist.

I'm asking what you are basing your assertion on. If I were a police officer I would probably be biased. I would know that I have a much higher chance of being killed if I was dealing with a black person over a white person. Since the vast majority of police deaths are involving armed subjects and a very small minority involving unarmed subjects I don't think you've really done anything but echo a talking point you heard.
