Thread: This Is How You Lose the Tariff War

After I posted about it this morning, a reporter asked Trump directly.

Traders have reportedly come up with the acronym TACO, which stands for “Trump always chickens out,” to take advantage of the trade environment created by the president’s habit of threatening to impose tariffs on countries, and then backing off at the last moment.

He bristled when asked about it Wednesday in an Oval Office press conference.

“Don’t ever say what you say, that’s a nasty question,” Trump told a journalist who asked for his response to the acronym. “To me that’s the nastiest question.”

Trump was wise to show his anger and put an abrupt stop to any mention of TACO. Otherwise, people might have started calling him "TACO Trump" or "the Backtrack Baron." Another stable genius move.

    And how about this?!

Court says Trump doesn't have the authority to set tariffs
    Ben Berkowitz

A federal court on Wednesday ruled President Trump does not have the authority under economic emergency legislation to impose sweeping global tariffs.

Why it matters: The U.S. Court of International Trade's ruling could bring the administration's trade war to a screeching halt.

By blocking entirely most categories of tariffs, the court effectively wiped out most of the regime Trump put in place since taking office.
Driving the news: The court, ruling in two separate cases, issued a summary judgment throwing out all the tariffs Trump imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA.

Trump used the 1977 law, which had never before been invoked in a tariff situation, to unilaterally impose sweeping trade levies worldwide.
The two groups of plaintiffs — businesses and states — sued on the grounds that the president's orders violated the Constitution's grant of authority over import duties to Congress.

Before you start circle jerking your anime dolls in celebration, I’d advise you wait until the appeals court & ultimately SCOTUS rules on the appeal. You’re going to be disappointed.

The court ruled on using tariffs under one avenue. There are two other legal avenues they could pursue as legal justifications to tariff.
I asked for neither your Opinion,
    your Acceptance
    nor your Permission.

All of those outcomes have a significant, or at least more than insignificant, probability of happening.

Why? No really. Why that attitude to what historically has been America's best ally?

Oh grow the fuck up. Criticism is not hostile opposition for the sake of it. Rubber stamping a defanged lunatic is more of a direct path to destruction than vigorous debate over solutions.

If Canada believes that socialism/communism is the best avenue for their country.. they shouldn't need the United States to defend them. They should be able to stand up for themselves.

It's amazing how little you have to spend on military defense when you are neighbors to the US.

So you think that gives Trump or America or you the right to treat them like shit after all the historical good will between us? To just be openly hostile for no good reason? Not only is that fucked up it's dumb.
