If Trump implements his plans, U.S. tariffs on imports from China would reach a combined 104%. The new taxes would be on top of the 20% tariffs announced as punishment for fentanyl trafficking and his separate 34% tariffs announced last week.

A reason China has not invaded Taiwan is because of China's dependence on international commerce, which would be severely upended by military action against Taiwan. If Trump shuts down trade with China, what further reason does China have for delay? If there's no longer the economic issue, then why not invade now? Take back Taiwan and all of its 60% control of the chip market in the process?

One of the principal reasons why tariffs were abandoned after WWII was to encourage international trade. International trade would, it was thought, discourage war.
