President Donald Trump has said he believes the US will gain control of Greenland, after showing renewed interest in acquiring the autonomous Danish territory in recent weeks.

"I think we're going to have it," he told reporters on Air Force One on Saturday, adding that the island's 57,000 residents "want to be with us".

His comments come after reports that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen insisted Greenland was not for sale in a fiery phone call with the president last week.

• Sales Tax. Greenland has no sales tax.

I'd rather we focus on free healthcare and education, more affordable housing, food, and overall general prices, and higher wages for the working class before we talk about acquiring another territory for its resources. And if we get to that point I contend that there be agreements where all benefit rather than threatening using force.

A fundamental problem I see with socialists, Marxists, leftists, etc. is they ignore or deny basic human sociology. We naturally organize ourselves into social hierarchies and compete to survive. People are not equal in abilities & ambition. Thinking that we’re all just going to get along with each other and everyone gets an equal share is a fantasy that defies our very nature.

China seeks to supplant the United States to become the world’s sole dominant superpower. That is a fact. We are presently locked in a Cold War, and our way of life is at stake much the same way as it was when we competed with the USSR. Spare me that kumbaya ‘why can’t we all just get along?’ nonsense. Wake up and grow up.

As part of Denmark, residents of Greenland get to elect members to represent them in the Danish parliament. Greenlanders would lose all voice in national politics if the U.S. acquires Greenland, because residents of U.S. territories don't get to elect members of Congress and don't get to vote in presidential elections. Greenland would need to become a state to have the right to participate in Congress or presidential elections. With a population of less than 10% of the U.S. state with the smallest population, Greenland is likely to be a territory only, not a state, if it is acquired by the U.S.
