Default This Is How You Lose the Tariff War

What Trump vows to do on January 20, 2025..
On Monday, Trump sent shockwaves across the nation’s northern and southern borders, vowing sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, as well as China, as soon as he takes office as part of his effort to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs.

In a pair of posts on his Truth Social site Trump railed against an influx of illegal migrants, even though southern border apprehensions have been hovering near four-year lows.

He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, as one of his first executive orders.

    Mexico's response..
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum threatened to retaliate with her own tariffs against the United States, after President-elect Trump suggested he would impose a 25 percent tax on imported goods from Mexico if her country did not stop the flow of drugs across the border.

    Canada's response..
“Canada and the United States have one of the strongest and closest relationships–particularly when it comes to trade and border security. Canada places the highest priority on border security and the integrity of our shared border.

“Our relationship today is balanced and mutually beneficial, particularly for American workers. Today, Canada buys more from the United States than China, Japan, France, and the UK combined.

“Canada is essential to US domestic energy supply, and last year 60 percent of US crude oil imports originated in Canada.

This is the first time ever Trump has threatened tariffs. Everyone PANIC!!!

    From 2019:
Trump backs off tariff threat, says Mexico will help stem tide of Central American migrants headed for the U.S.

You know he wrote a book called The Art of the Deal, right? This is a game of big bank take little bank to get what we want. While yes, a 25% tariff imposed on Mexico and Canada would be an inconvenience for the American consumer, imposing that would be absolutely devastating to the economies of Mexico & Canada. Guess what they’ll do? Exactly what we tell them to do, just like last time.

I’m still amazed on how the majority of people don’t understand that the consumer ends up paying the tariff.

Ehhh..yes the consumer always pays higher than the cost of doing business, but theoretically (and that’s all this whole political theater with Trump now really is to be clear) a 25% tariff would place Mexican and Canadian businesses outside of the competitive global marketplace. The consumer would pay higher prices for similar domestic or other foreign products that don’t have that severe competitive disadvantage.

And how exactly is that a good thing? Because he’s going to have to raise the tariffs much higher than 25% to make domestic products competitive, that’s not even taking in account if America has domestic business that can compete or even want to compete.

Average salary for a factory worker in Mexico is less than $3, far far less than what a factory worker would need in the states, that’s not factoring in the cost to expand infrastructure to accommodate a growing work force in that market, on top of that unemployment is extremely low right now.

There’s literally no reason for American companies to bring back shit into America when the cost to actually do so is significantly higher than just keeping it overseas and just making the consumers pay the tariffs.

These tariffs are going to hurt the American consumer.

People complain about higher prices, yet now they have no problem paying even more? lol?

Wait... you didn't complain about high prices when Biden burdened the American consumer with high inflation.. but now you are suddenly concerned?

You sound exactly like the Champaign Socialist I always knew you were.

How poisoned are you willing to make the American society so you can save 20 cents on an avocado? Because that's exactly what is being done with the fentanyl from China.

Did you even study the opium wars?

Solkern is one of the "experts" that is wrong about everything.

20 extra cents for an avocado and Solkern is outraged, 200 billion for Ukraine and he gets all giddy.

Trump says foreign countries will pay the tariffs and will not cause inflation. If he is correct, why would a tariff raise avocado prices?
