Automatic voter registration (AVR) is a process in which eligible individuals are automatically registered to vote when interacting with certain government agencies, such as a department of motor vehicles. Information gathered from participating government agencies is transmitted to election officials, who use it to either create a new voter record or update an existing registration. While this process is triggered by an interaction with a participating government agency, it is not compulsory—individuals may choose to opt out of registration during their transaction at the agency, or later by returning a mailer, depending on the state.

Twenty-three states and Washington, D.C., are categorized by NCSL as having enacted or implemented automatic voter registration.

Another swing state, Pennsylvania, is joining the list. Like most of the other states with AVR, Pennsylvania will generate a voter registration at the time an individual obtains a driver license. Voter registration in Pennsylvania will not be mandatory.

Donald Trump said last night on his social media platform that AVR in Pennsylvania would be unconstitutional. He did not explain what part of the Constitution it would violate, nor did he say if he was referring to the federal or state Constitution..

Pennsylvania is at it again! The Radical Left Governor, Josh Shapiro, has just announced a switch to Automatic Voter Registration, a disaster for the Election of Republicans, including your favorite President, ME! This is a totally Unconstitutional Act, and must be met harshly by Republican Leadership in Washington and Pennsylvania. Likewise, the RNC, and Ronna McDaniel, must spend their time working on this, instead of meaningless Debates where I am up by more than 50 points. Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin, and others, are far more important than "Aida," Sloppy Chris, Lyin' Mike Pence, Nikki "Birdbrain" Haley, Ron ("Dead Campaign") DeSanctimonious, and the others. Start suing now, & get the right lawyers this time! The Pennsylvania Republican Party must likewise not let this happen. Regarding the federal Constitution, the argument put forth by a member of Trump's voter fraud commission, a short-lived entity created by Trump in 2017 to prove that Hillary Clinton did not really get more of the popular vote than Trump, was that AVR is a form a compelled speech in violation of the First Amendment. That argument has not been tested before the Supreme Court. Not yet.

My personal opinion is that if you are illiterate to the point that you can’t check a box to become a registered voter when you apply for or renew your driver’s license / state ID card, you probably have no business voting.

However, I don’t really see this as a big deal as long as it’s registering truly eligible voters. Just leave non-citizens & dead people out of the AVR.

Well they are coming out with the new ID cards to help allow them to work easier so its really not a reach to get to SS numbers -> drivers license -> voter registration
