How does one track the number of things that didn't happen though? There are probably plenty of cases of X crime not even being attempted due to knowing or suspecting that the intended target would be armed.

You could track gun ownership compared to crime rates. That might be a good metric to find out if guns are a deterrent or not. Wouldn't be a foolproof idea but it might be able to get you a general sense on it's effectiveness.

And several countries in Africa have the highest suicide rates in the world, far outpacing Japan and South Korea and they have hardly any gun restrictions. Less access to firearms would absolutely lower the US suicide rates. I'm not advocating that we should make them illegal, though. If someone wants to end themselves that is between them and God.

Of course not having a gun doesn't make someone less suicidal... It takes away a means with nearly 100% efficiency to end their lives... Suicidal people without guns die at much lower rates. Either way it is death by a gun, even if self inflicted.

It's really subjective to be honest. There's no way to quantify it, but even taking suicides out you're looking at a little over 20k dead (number jumps pretty significantly when you add in suicides and maiming). The 65k defensive use of a gun number isn't always someone who is in mortal danger so it's not a 1 to 1 ratio there.

There's literally a way to quantify it... it just doesn't fit your narrow narrative so you dismiss it.
