By now, I'm sure you've all seen video of Ukraine's UN ambassador reading text messages from a Russian soldier to his mother. The messages were taken from a cell phone found on the Russian soldier's body after Ukrainians killed him.
Do you believe those were real text messages sent by the deceased soldier or something manufactured by Ukraine? If I wanted to generate false war propaganda -- something at which I would be very good; in fact, I would really excel at it -- I would have written similar text messages, except that my fake text messages would have been even more believable and more heart wrenching. I can recognize a fake.

You're not wrong about Russia taking over Ukraine. Unless something significant changes, it's more an issue of "when" than "if". Holding the entire country, on the other hand, is going to be virtually impossible long term.
But you are dead wrong about Putin laughing at the US. You saying that indicates to me that you haven't really bothered to read much beyond headlines.

"Sanctions" is an umbrella term for a lot of things. There is no comparing what the West is currently doing to Russia to any other situation. They pull cards out of the deck that no one- including them- ever believed they'd actually do. And they're talking about even more severe sanctions as we speak. Don't confuse what has happened this week with what has happened in the past. This is unprecedented for an economy of this size. Their economy has functionally started melting down at this point. They would need a lot of help to keep things from imploding there, and even China is being very hesitant with any significant aid.
Secondly, a no-fly zone puts US, EU, and/or NATO planes in direct military combat with Russian planes and makes us the aggressors. That's called a declaration of war. If Putin- whom you may have noticed isn't coming across as particularly sane right now- decides that the West is out to destroy Russia by engaging in economic AND military war what do you think he's going to do?
While I realize that overly reductive views of the world are consoling when you don't feel equipped to handle it, they make better headlines and campaign slogans than they do actual foreign policy.

Well, we could stop buying their oil and make ourselves energy independent again. We could sell natural gas to the EU so they wouldn't be beholden to Putin. We could have kept energy costs low and not allowed Putin to stockpile cash and supplies on the backs of the Western energy economy. We could have not had a POTUS saying on national TV that invasion was mostly ok. But hey, no more meat tweets.
