That's the reality of the military forces of autocrats, their solders are often demoralized or outright resistant to their orders. This coupled with the shit show of Russian supply lines for food and fuel is why Ukraine has held out so long. Every time the Russians abandon a tank, a Ukrainian can often be seen showing up with diesel and taking possession of the abandoned equipment.
