To put this in appropriate context- an authoritarian who has spent his time in power trying to dismantle Western democracies (after dismantling his own country's democracy) has begun invading a country that has been successfully transitioning into a functional Western democracy.
This isn't about whether or not Ukraine counts as a "formal" ally. Our number one geopolitical adversary, who has been the single biggest threat to democracy across the Western world (including our own) is trying to take down a new democracy and to position himself more strategically in the European region.
If Russia takes over the Ukraine, that will be the third democracy that has fallen in Europe in the past 10 years. Notably, Russia will be positioned next to the other two. Russia also happens to be partially responsible for the end of functional democracy in Poland ("Waitergate"), and Putin will be in a better position to do to them what he's about to do to Ukraine.
This is not "just" an attack on Ukraine. It's a literal, and intentional, attack on the notion of Western democratic societies- just the latest in a string of highly successful operations to damage, or fully thwart, them.
And I will also point out that a former US President is fucking congratulating Putin on what he's doing.
The people who are egging Putin on- and who are trying to convince you this is no big deal- are not friends of freedom. They're not the good guys. They're part of a larger movement that has been going on for some time now to end Western liberal democracy, and that movement is gaining steam rapidly.
