Just like they didn't like the "look" of a third world city on the border... so they literally bussed them all over the country, dropped them off, and bulldozed the area... because the "optics" were bad for them... What you get when professional grifters are in charge... no real solutions, just smoke and mirrors.
Washington Examiner misquoted, but fucking surprise there. What they said was the exact opposite of what you're implying about troop levels.

Actually their recommendations was the drawdown stay above 2,000 troops ONLY until August 31st when the mission was complete. All three pointed out in lockstep that having troops in Afghanistan would not have resulted in a betterment of the Afghanistan position, would have cost far more American lives for little gain and each of them said they recommended unanimously against it.
