That you don't represents a profound disconnect from reality. Its been clear since we had taxes (any taxes, and no, we didn't have income taxes right away) at all. One of the prime reasons the Articles failed is because we couldn't pay an army to protect everyone so they could become successful.
There is a vast, gigantic difference between "The reason we pay taxes is to help others succeed" and "We pay them (taxes) for more than just ourselves"
