Measles isn't dangerous because 500 people got it last year, measles is dangerous because millions got it every year prior to vaccination.

I'm sick for the first time in like 10-12 years. My stomach has been the gold standard against which other stomachs have been judged. Now I'm afraid that it's been reduced to a quivering shell of it's former self. It is time to relinquish my title, all.

I urge any and all who believe they are strong enough to take my reins. I thought I was strong enough to keep this beast at bay for at least a single night while I waited on reinforcements, yet I was clearly outmatched - ladies and gentlemen... I pooped the bed for the first time since I've learned that you're not supposed to poop the bed.

I'm sorry. I'm so very sorry. And feverish.

How many people get it has no bearing on how dangerous it is. How many people catch a cold every year? Prior to vaccination the complications from measles were dangerous mostly because it was at least 55 years ago. Look at the measles outbreak from '89-91. 55,000 people got it and 123 died. That is 0.2236%. France had a measles boom from '08-11; 22,000 people got it, 10 died. 0.0454%. If every single person in the US got the measles with that percentage of deaths only about 145,000 would die.

With medicine where it is today, measles is no longer dangerous.

I wonder what WHO has to say about measles.

Measles is one of the leading causes of death among young children even though a safe and cost-effective vaccine is available.
In 2012, there were 122 000 measles deaths globally – about 330 deaths every day or 14 deaths every hour.
Measles vaccination resulted in a 78% drop in measles deaths between 2000 and 2012 worldwide.
In 2012, about 84% of the world's children received one dose of measles vaccine by their first birthday through routine health services – up from 72% in 2000.
Since 2000, more than 1 billion children in high risk countries were vaccinated against the disease through mass vaccination campaigns ― about 145 million of them in 2012.

Do you live in a third world country, Terrence?

I didn't think so. Stop trying to act like measles treatment in Uganda has something to do with how dangerous it is in the US.

My bad. Let's see what the CDC has to say about measles.

About 30% of measles cases develop one or more complications, including

Pneumonia, which is the complication that is most often the cause of death in young children.
Ear infections occur in about 1 in 10 measles cases and permanent loss of hearing can result.
Diarrhea is reported in about 8% of cases.

These complications are more common among children under 5 years of age and adults over 20 years old.

Even in previously healthy children, measles can be a serious illness requiring hospitalization. As many as 1 out of every 20 children with measles gets pneumonia, and about 1 child in every 1,000 who get measles will develop encephalitis. (This is an inflammation of the brain that can lead to convulsions, and can leave the child deaf or mentally retarded.) For every 1,000 children who get measles, 1 or 2 will die from it. Measles also can make a pregnant woman have a miscarriage, give birth prematurely, or have a low-birth-weight baby.
So...30% of measles cases develops at least one of the following complications:

Pneumonia, which can lead to death.
Ear infections, which can lead to permanent hearing lose.
Diarrhea, which can lead to death.
Encephalitis, which can lead to death, deafness, and mental retardation.
Pregnant women with measles can have a miscarriage, give birth prematurely, or have a low-birth-weight baby.

This is all in a country with good medicine by the way. Things are worse in developing countries.

You're looking at deaths and saying "Meh, it's not dangerous." Why aren't you looking at deafness, mental retardation, and pneumonia stats too? Are you looking at the ages of the people who were diagnosed with measles in those stats, seeing as how children are more likely to die from the disease?

I really wonder why the CDC hasn't taken measles vaccination off of their recommend vaccinations list if measles is not dangerous in the US.

So basically you don't care about what happens in the rest of the world. I see.

I guess I'll just be gathering up my smallpox blanket and head out on vacation now.
