It's a shameful part of our history, and people just want to ignore and forget about it because it shakes how we define ourselves as Americans. People call ditching Columbus Day revisionist- it's actually the exact opposite. It's acknowledging what actually happened and realizing that it's not something we should be celebrating.
I actually never understood celebrating Columbus day, We gave the dude a Holiday for fucking up. He screwed up, plain and simple. He wasn't even the first.
