A new report from The Washington Postoutlines a tool that lets the NSA record every phone call in a country for a entire month, then replays entire conversations as needed. Think of it like a DVR of every conversation that occurs over a rolling 30-day period — including any conversations involving Americans.

We live right on the edge of oblivion. Any number of a bazillion things go slightly wrong and that's that.
I'm gonna go get a frosty from BK.
Here's the thing, though. To wipe out a major metropolitan area you have to hit it, and only 3% of the Earth's surface is covered by cities of any kind. Plus if you see the asteroid coming you can just turn away from the explosion and you'll be fine (c.f. action movies).

At Parting of the Waters, water actually covers the Continental Divide such that a fish could safely swim from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean drainages. In fact, it is thought that this was the pass that provided the immigration route for Cutthroat Trout to migrate from the Snake River (Pacific) to Yellowstone River (Atlantic) drainages.
