Until this year I never had to get the piece of paper, he's the only teacher that has ever objected. I've always invited teachers to look over my shoulder, offered to send in my notes to help the class, etc.

I have a legitimate processing disorder though, it takes much longer for information to sink in and be completely understood, I need a lot more clarity than other students. I've become a good self-advocate and I ask questions and such when I'm unclear, but he makes fun of me because I ask questions after almost every instruction he gives, but I NEED the clarity or I won't be able to complete the task.

My dyslexia isn't usually that big of a problem when I have a word processor, but if I'm writing by hand my letters get jumbled and sometimes I drop off in the middle of words. It makes notes impossible for me to read, I can't get enough information onto the page. It makes it useless to study. Numbers are a whole different issue. G 9 6 P IDK? THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME MOST OF THE TIME.

On this I agree. The bullshit part is you getting to be special instead of equal. I guess I see it from the standpoint of a different student sitting in the class, following the rules and writing pen and paper even if he/she hates it and it is slower but it is the rules, only to have you be special and get to use technology just to keep up.

Well, seeing as I have had multitudes of tests throughout my life that SAY I have a processing problem and if give adequate time and resources I will perform equal to the other students, I don't think it's that ridiculous. Plus, if they wanna pay for the testing to get it, they probably can. Fucking ridiculous how much it costs to get the testing done. At least I know I got a 127 IQ... That's food for thought.

The differences is that while it is an inconvenience for the other students, they can still participate AT the class level without it. I CANNOT.

So what you're saying is on an uneven playing field you will be on par with the other students paying for the same education but if you have to follow the same standards you won't be on par but it's cool because you'll have the same degree.

    At least I know I got a 127 IQ...'Murica.

In the real world, I would be able to use technology. It is absurd that any professor say you can't because it is integral to today's society. I'm paying the same cost, in order to receive the same available level of education, if I cannot participate in a manner which would allow me to receive an equal education to that of my "normal education" peers, I shouldn't be paying the same cost. So, let me use my computer or give me a 30% refund on my tuition.

'Murica says that if I should get the same quality goods and services you do if I'm paying the same price and buying from the same vendor. And the ME generation says IM SPECIAL AND I CAN DO ANYTHING I WANT TO DO. Except be president if I was born somewhere else.

I value the education that I'm getting, if I'm indenturing myself to the country for this amount of money, and investing this much time into it, I better fucking learn something. I want to achieve as high as possible, I can't do that without technology. I should be able to do that, or my degree is worthless.

That being said, I think that other students should also be allowed to use technology if they find that it helps them, but as the professors have noticed, most students who bring laptops to class aren't actually using them for note taking purposes--which is why I understand where he was coming from, but I think it is a very harsh reaction to a problem which could be handled easily on a single person basis. We only have 34 people in the program. We have the same teachers 2.5 years in a row.

Sorry, I kinda stopped reading right there.

School is not meant to prepare you for the real world... It's to teach you soft skills, like how to learn, how to memorize, and to introduce some culture via humanities, books, etc. Those are skills that are absolutely required every day in the real world for you to do on your own, with or without a crutch of technology.

Hell, if everyone was always able to use technology ever... there's no reason to teach math anymore.

It's not about what you learn, it's about learning how to learn.

Maybe you should have kept reading, so you could learn about how she learns as revealed by testing designed to do so.
