Flu is wicked this year. Somewhere I heard that while making the vaccines they (big pharma) miscalculated on which South American strain was going to make it up to North America so the vaccine that everyone is rushing out to get is described by world health as only "moderately affective" against this years strains. Obviously this only perpetuates the problem but they still want to sell the vaccines and they risk losing money if they don't so they hire doctors to promote the vaccines anyway. Thank you corporate overlords, flu epidemic is just what the doctor ordered (pun totally intended).

There are 4 strains of flu that are hitting right now and the vaccine covers 3 (at least that's what the DPH has been discussing in meetings here in MA). The flu shot will still provide some protection and limit the severity to the fourth. The strains included in the flu vaccine are determined months before flu seasons and it is based off a bunch of predictions and math equations, etc etc. They don't cover all strains because then it'd get harder and more expensive to produce, leading to a bunch of shortages, etc etc. We've been blessed with two really mild flu seasons recently. The flu shot is really one of those vaccines where people think if they don't get the flu, that it's because the flu wasn't that bad and they don't need to get the shot and when they do get the flu, it's because the vaccine is a scam. Not really a big deal either way, unless you're in one of the more vulnerable groups. You're really just risking a week of discomfort. I'm required to get it since I'm in the hospitals, but I'd still get it either way.

Having worked in pharma ... I can say, yeah, a lot of medicine is pushed on people and doctors. A lot of the terms we know for heartburn were created by companies to push their meds. I'm cynical of a lot of things pharmaceutical companies do, but the flu shot's not really one of them.
