Biden issued the debate challenge because he thought he would be able to debate and because Trump had been taunting him daily, saying Trump would debate anytime anywhere, including specifically urging Biden to come the courthouse in New York where Trump was on trial so they could debate there. Biden wanted to appear to take the lead, instead of appearing to respond to Trump, so Biden issued the challenge.
If Trump had not taunted Biden, Biden would not have issued the challenge and voters would not have known until late September, which would have been much too late to replace Biden.
If Trump had known how badly Biden would perform at the debate, then it would have been smart for Trump to keep quiet and wait for debates at the usual time. If Biden had known how badly he would perform, then he certainly would not have issued the challenge.
It is an example of how old age and cognitive decline can sneak up on a person, not slowly but in imperceivably small increments, until one day it becomes evident, even though you may at first deny it by convincing yourself that you just had a bad day. Biden must feel relieved. Trump is still in the denial stage.
