I bet if we put up a "Miss me yet?" Khaladon billboard like that on some random interstate, people would be so confused by it that it would go viral and make the news and all that shit, and then eventually someone from our side would get to explain it, and then millions of people would instantly know about GS.Originally Posted by thread

Haha, these two comments made me laugh, especially because my current character is an orphan with a particularly tragic past.
I think it's partly because Gemstone is a game that launches you into it's world alone with nobody you know around you and very little in the way of explaining any lore or how the general world works, and players feeling like orphan children upon arriving feels sorta fitting.
I also think part of it is the desire for everyone's character to have a heroic arc, and a lot of heroic arts we are familiar with (especially in fantasy fiction) involve somebody rising up to overcome tragedy or some sort of unusually horrible event to triumph over the forces of evil. It's natural to want to create some sort of epic character backstory for an adventurer you imagine inhabiting for years. But the idea of a nice well-adjusted regular-to-do just chilling in the landing made me grin. Just hanging out, and avoiding the occasional horrible creature or two, or those times the sky sometimes rains blood...
And then lastly, thinking about all this reminded me of the preface to the newer D&D players guide:
"The first characters and adventures you create will probably be a collection of cliches. That's true of everyone, from the greatest Dungeon Masters in history on down. Accept this reality and move on to create the second character or adventure, which will be better, and then the third, which will be better still. Repeat that over the course of time, and soon you'll be able to create anything, from a character's background story to an epic world of fantasy adventure."
The idea of who my character was at level 5 was different that what I think about myself at level 25, and I'm sure it'll be different still what I think of by level 50 and beyond. It's all a constant evolution, especially because as a player I still have SO much to learn about the world and lore, considering how expansive and long-running the game is and also all the gaps and blanks in history or how things work we as players are sort of free to fill in on our own.
I know this is sort of a late reply that is off topic from the original poster's post, but it made me laugh and I had to reply

“ nice well-adjusted regular-to-do just chilling in the landing ”
That is how I RP. Just a middle aged guy who hunts for a living. Rents a room at a shabby inn because property is too expensive to buy. Kids grew up and moved away (they never visit). Never eats food he finds on critters, or sold by Goblyn...you know, normal stuff. I think a lot more people RP this way, they just are not vocal about it.
There are so many over the top things in this game, it is a lot of fun to simply react to the absurdity. The cloaks with spiders crawling around? The abundance of sewer rats as pets? People skinning animals in white gloves? My character came back to the lands and is confused...and a little grossed out.
Advice:
Hlendril, listen to what people are telling you, and stop worrying about what people think. This advice also applies outside of gemstone.
My character is a 1337 d00d from the future that got transported back in time through a chronomage mishap. He was just minding his business fapping to a 3/4 downloaded dial-up porn pic in the 90s, then next thing he knows he's at Helga's Tavern wearing some shitty leather armor and people telling him shit like not talk about the Super Bowl and he was like
Hey! That happened to my character too, except I was emotionally abused, my father died, my mother died, my only sister died, I grew up in an orphanage where the head mistress was mean so one day I’ll need to confront her and realize she was the one that murdered my family because I’m the star child with super powers that unlock Lorninstras powers and if it was ever to get out the whole world would be doomed.
