EDIT: We won Levar and Felicia, details here (http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?t=55929)
Everyone always claims that Gemstone should do more advertising, and they should!

They also have a new awesome twitter feed!

This crazy coincidence has created the potential for the most awesome advertising ever!

http://stores.ebay.com/TwitChange-Auction

We can buy them celebrity retweets! This is a charity auction to benefit an orphanage in haiti (or something like that).

Imagine, Mario Lopez (http://cgi.ebay.com/TWITCHANGE-Mario-Lopez-Twitter-Pkg-mariolopezextra-/300466557979?pt=Tickets_Experiences&hash=item45f533d41b), retweeting GemStoneIV: The Treasure Hunter Khlat will be working for the next hour in the Landing in Platinum. Check the docks! (http://twitter.com/GemStoneIV/statuses/24542498868). How awesome would that be?!? People would be like "WTF Mario, wtf is a gemstone 4? Who the hell is khalt?"

And then, Mario will follow Gemstone's twitter feed for a month, meaning he'll get to learn all the cool stuff like. GemStoneIV: Belopo setup a raffle for a 6x longsword in Wehnimer's Landing, TSNW. Draws Sat, 7pm Eastern. (Prime/Plat) (http://twitter.com/GemStoneIV/statuses/24172691662) and all of his followers will see that he is following GemstoneIV and realize that the game must be cool, because AC Slater plays it.

And there is more, Mario will mention GS4 in one of his tweets. So he'll be all like: "Wassup, rocking some @GemstoneIV earlier, got myself a badass 6x longsword"

This, alone, will bring in dozens of new accounts, for sure! And right now the bidding stands at only $300, if we all give $1, we can do it!

Edit
paypal virilneus@virilneus.com to donate, include your char or account name if you want official credit. If we fail in this epic struggle, I'll refund donations, unless you specifically tell me not to. If we succeed but have extra, the excess will be donated to charity, I'll open a poll to vote for which one.

Target Celebs:

Levar Burton - 1.6million nerdy followers, likes to promote the reading of text. If simu wanted to get involved they could give donators +10 perception visors.
Jeri Ryan - some people would know her from her other work though, not just as 7 of 9. Could celebrate with a borg invasion.
Felicia Day - gamer actress has a web tv show about rpg gaming.

If someone wants to suggest a celebrity, post... but check the list first, it isn't every celebrity in the world who is on it. Suggesting someone not on the list is a waste of time. Before I do the bidding I'll make a quick poll of the noms.

The worst thing about Simutronics is, of course, Gemstone IV. It's unbelievable to me. Gemstone IV is the only game in the history of America that's never been advertised. And there's a reason. All of the Gemstone IV that was ever made was made in 1988. And so, since nobody plays that stuff, every year there's a ton of it left over. And the Gemstone IV company sends the guys to the villages and they collect out of the dumpsters all the Gemstone IV we've thrown away. They wash it!! They wash it!

I'll never forget the first time my mother gave me Gemstone IV. She said, "Here - Ravin, this is Gemstone IV. It's a game that plays like crack". [high pitched sound] This plays like crap! And every year since then, Simutronics has returned and I, like an Alzhiemer's patient, find myself in the room, and the room has a big table in it, and on the table is the website for Gemstone IV. And I look at it as if I've never seen it before. "Gemstone IV", I think. "A game that plays like crack. I can't wait". Son of a bitch!!

Simu should solicit donations for Levar Burton, and say everyone who donates $10 gets a free +10 perception skill pair of gnomish spectacles. Then, if they win, they could have Levar Burton day, with an invasion in prime of tribbles, and an invasion in shattered of levar burtons.

HOKAY GUYS! We need to pick a celebrity that both might actually like gemstone and has a fan base that might as well; therefore I nominate Vin Diesel for the following reason:

Diesel has played Dungeons & Dragons for over twenty years and wrote the foreword for the commemorative book 30 Years of Adventure: A Celebration of Dungeons & Dragons. In the 30th Anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons issue of Dragon Magazine, they examine the fact that Diesel played Dungeons & Dragons, and reveal that he had a fake tattoo of his character's name, "Melkor," on his stomach while filming xXx.

EDIT: Or Shatner, because he's fucking awesome.

We're going to need a good amount.

Also Levar Burton (sp?) might be a good idea cause he has to go cheaper than Shaq, right? Plus his nerdbase might be interested. And if he checks it out he'll see how much reading you have to do to play, and that dovetails nicely with his whole eye-visor/l2read ethos.

Seconded.

After further examination, I think it HAS to be LeVar. Like Ryvicke so eloquently said, his lrn2read ethos is unquestioned.

That follower count of his is beastlike, too, especially when you consider his relative status as not-a-famous-person-anymore. We could get him a lot cheaper.

6. Has the earth not been created as a nesting place?

7. And the mountains as pegs? (meaning they function as braces for the tectonic plates)

8. And you were created in pairs (male and female, tall and short, good and bad, etc.).

9. And have made your sleep as a thing for rest.

10. And have made the night as a covering (through its darkness),

11. And have made the day for livelihood.

12. And We have built above you seven strong (heavens) (7 layers of the atmosphere)

13. And have made (therein) a shining lamp (sun).

14. And have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water.

15. That We may produce therewith corn and vegetations,

If the whole mess falls through, you go back to paypal and start clicking the "refund payment" buttons (or just forward it all to Tillmen and Spiffy for lich and script awesomeness, but I'm not sure everyone would agree to that one).

There were many other people that said stuff like "I'm in" without a cash value. If you were one of those, re-post with how much you are "in" for.

It seems that Levar Burton is going to win because Vin Diesel is not available on the site (that I can find).

It would be possible.

The only possible way though would be to find out who their agent is, contact them, and hope they don't blow you off. Then it has to be worth their time. The agent doesn't work for free, the publicist doesn't work for free. We'd also need to get W9 tax forms because the payment would be over $600, or we could NOT pay them and just promise to donate to a charity but they either need to trust us, or we'd need to get the charity involved as a third party verifier of the donation, then we need to trust the celebrity to actual do their end of the bargain. In the end we'd probably need a contract, which means legal fees, and probably weeks of back of forth, which the agents will handle of course, because their 10% on $1000 is totally worth their time.....

So... probably not a high probability for success.

if they're wise they probably have checks in their voting scripts to prevent automated voting programs, but it might be worth a shot.

You've got ip addresses and time limits, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. A good voting website will have cookie checks, read and write a cookie to make sure you're a legit browser. Referrer checks as well. Sometimes write a cookie on one page, write another on a second page, and compare to make sure you're browsing the site like a person. They can also check things like imageloading, to make sure you're loading images.

Some sites probably don't, but others will have these more advanced tools.

pabstblueribbon
09-20-2010, 11:14 PM
The one you need to be concerned with is www.topmudsites.com . And yes, they have rules against auto-voting routines. There is no rule against a program reminding you to vote and opening your browser with the voting link for you to click on, though. I'm sure you could make it 'click' the vote thing too, but due to auto voters, its some weird image thing that they can tell you clicked and not just auto-linked to.

As far as I know, the only thing they can really check for is IP addresses and time limits and of course that.. weird click thinger.

I think this is a good idea and I hope you guys win the bidding because I believe that introducing shattered when the population was so low was a horrible idea because what it did was cause a three way split in an already limited population where the game that everyone was playing got even less people playing it because a whole bunch of people jumped ship to go to the other one. Yes you have players that play both but in the old version you had those that would pvp once and awhile and do other things the other while and now most if not all of the hard core pvp people went to shattered, and the hunters only probably stayed in the older version, so no matter how you look at it I believe it was the wrong time to release it with the population the way it was.

But now with this...there might actually be some hope left after all. If this even works.

Otherwise all GS did was go from the frying pan into the fire in my opinion. But this could have the potential of bringing it back to life. I think Mario Lopez would give it the most attention at the moment because that guy is literally everywhere.

The funny thing is simu's complete lack action on this kinda makes me just want to cancel my account.

When things get so bad that your users take it upon themselves to start a donation and pay for some advertising for you and you can't even muster a measly couple of hundred bucks (that you should already be putting in without the grass roots campaign to begin with...) it makes me not want to support you at all as a company.

We've got 870, I know another 50 is coming soon so 920.

Thats close... we might be able to bid on it... we'll get outbid, I'm sure, but we can throw our hat into the ring.

I get what you're saying, but I think there's a silver lining. I find it incredibly remarkable that the GS community bonded together rapidly, and was, when all is said and done, extraordinarily generous.

In a general sense, their lack of action can be disconcerting. In this instance, though, Solomon did post that he was looking into the matter. They've also tweeted about the fundraiser on their feed, and I believe Viril stated Tiqal was trying to work to organize an official response as well. By Simu standards, they're responding pretty damn well.

Tiqal spreading the word to GMs isn't really official. Ultimately, my money goes to simu the company not the GMs. Putting out a twitter/message board post for zero dollars doesn't show a lot of involvement to me, from the company.

The point is I'm already paying a disproportionate amount of money a month for the game and I see very little of that go back into making the game better. Upkeep on the technical side is relatively minimal, the "developers" are mostly volunteers paid a pittance, and as near as we can tell absolutely zero dollars are spent on marketing the game to bring in new blood even after years of attrition.

The bulk of my check goes to the company, and by extension whatley. That's my problem. It's something you just kind of deal with normally, but honestly when your customers start a volunteer drive to basically make you MORE money and the best response you can muster is "i'll see what i can do"...that's just pathetic.

Yeah. In a larger sense, you're dead on.

I don't mean to be a debbie downer. The community by and large is what has kept those of us who are still addicted going, and this act is absolute proof of how great of a place it can be.

I have an immense amount of respect for all of the GMs, even those I may disagree with on a design or personal level I know they (almost) always have the best of intentions for the game and the put immense amounts of blood, sweat, and tears into it.

But this was pretty much a "put up or shut up" situation, and the one person who really matters the most in terms of long term sustainability hasn't said shit.

Honestly...what other small business (and no matter how much money simu makes, that's what it is) can you think of where you can go to the owner and say "hey, we like your product so much we're starting a donation drive to advertise for you, because you never do, to make you more money" and your response would be the administrative equivalent of "cool story bro?"

They likely need to have a meeting. Im all for jumping on the band wagon to wonder why simu isnt helping but honestly theres a couple things they need to ponder in this situation.

1. They would have to paypal CRB or request to take over the initiative. While we dont mind sending CRB money im not sure their entirely comfortable sending a bunch of cash to a player. I can see the guy who writes the checks already saying "You want me to paypal what to who"?
2. If they have someone working on marketing already (I dont know if they do) im sure their getting a kick out of this. ie. Pissed
3. Is this a bad precedent? Do they want their marketing to now be done via poll on the player corner.

So theres a few reasons its alot easier for us to chip a few bucks in than it is for simu to commit. Shit I dont even play the game anymore I just thought it was a neat idea making a guy from star trek talk about gemstone.

They don't have to paypal anyone. Whichever of the two target celebs we end up going after, Simu goes after the other using its own resources. In other words, they more or less match our efforts with ::gasp:: effort of their own.

This would actually be cool because say you're a twitter user following both Levar AND Felicia: one of them tweets about "Gemstone 4 awesomesauce punch to the face interactive fantasy" and you're like "whatevs Felicia" but then an hour later Levar hits your feed talking about how Wil Wheaton wasn't on set for weeks in 97 because of this "Gemstone 4 SHIT that is like READING CRACK DRUGS" and then you're compelled to check it out.

Someone just copy/paste that and email it to Solomon presently cause I think he'll see the reasoning.
