As you say, we don’t yet know. It’s worthless to speculate the background and motives of the shooter, but it makes zero sense for this to be a politically motivated assassination by a conservative. My personal gut feeling is this was a politically motivated attack from the left. Time will tell.

A 200 yard shot with a rifle is not a hard thing to do. I’m not a firearms instructor, but I’m confident I could train someone completely novice to firearms to hit a man sized target at 200 yards with iron sights in 1 hour at the range.

I have a few guns, I don’t think I could hit a target 200 yards away with a single shot, especially a head or neck shot. But that’s just me. Could it have been a lucky shot? Yup, but I tend to side with the has a lot firearms experience
Doing something in a 100% controlled setting, is much different than doing something like this. Unless you have a background in firearms, I don’t think a novice could pull something like this off.

The shooter is at large, we don’t know what political side he’s on, and it shouldn’t matter, but imagine he was a Republican? What would you be saying?

He was shot from 200 yards away, that would mean he has lots of experience shooting, or military experience, pretty sure people with these backgrounds, lean more to the conservative side, right?

Somebody wanted Charlie Kirk dead for the things he said and the impact he made. Seems to me the left is by far most likely, but we shall learn more in time.

Well, you definitely need a rifle at that distance. I’m just saying that with a rifle shooting an appropriate caliber, a stable shooting position, time, and a relatively immobile target…no that’s not super complicated. You don’t have to be any sort of expert marksman to accomplish that. No military or extensive firearm training is required. At 200 yards you can easily do that with iron sights and it’s even easier with a magnified optic.

Distances past 300 yards on an intermediate rifle caliber like 5.56 or 7.62x39 (common for AR-15 & AK47 platform rifles) it becomes more difficult. After about 300 yards, bullet drop and wind become much more of a factor and errors in marksmanship fundamentals have a much greater impact. For full powered rifle calibers (common on bolt action hunting rifles), it’s roughly 500 yards before you have to start mathing.

In summary, the shooter had to know what he was doing but 200 yards at a mostly immobile target isn’t especially a difficult shot.

Edit: It does require that your sighting system (whether that is irons / red dot / scope / whatever) be zeroed which means the shooter at least did that much and spent some amount of time at the range. That’s what I mean by the shooter has to know what he was doing, but it’s not difficult at all to hit a 12 inch plate at that distance if you have that prerequisite.
