National Guard basically frees up the local law enforcement to do the arresting.

All of DC is federal property. I've read they have been detaining for law enforcement and have made 43 arrests themselves in DC.

That said, I'm pretty sure most of the units deployed to DC are MP units, and a lot of those are made up of civilian LEOs for their regular job too.

Several thoughts one it. Overall, it amounts to crime prevention, which is a good thing, but you never see the benefits personally. Joe blow doesn't know that he wasn't mugged due to crime prevention efforts, because it just never happens. People often lash out at proactive measures, because you don't physically see immediate results, you can just say things didn't happen.

Now, as a veteran who later went into law enforcement, I can 100% say the vast majority of the military isn't trained to handle civilian arrests and crime fighting. I wasn't taught about preservation of scenes or chain of custody and my knowledge of Miranda Rights was purely based on TV. I haven't followed it too heavily, so I'm not sure if they have military making arrests, but without the training on just the things I mentioned, their conviction rate will be very, very low.

That being said, I was talking to another officer who consistently gets awards from MADD for most DUI arrests in the state. They don't always go to conviction, sometimes they are plead down, sometimes they get a great lawyer and get nothing. He said that doesn't matter to him. He is happy to get them off the street for that night, because you don't know what they were on their way to do and at least everyone is safe for that night.

So, to reiterate, reduction in crime = good.

I don't think the way this has been forced on cities is the best way to go about it if we want to use our federal military to police day to day crime on our streets. It's Dictator Donald being a dickhead with the spineless republicans bowing down when it could have been a campaign to introduce legislation to change at least some of the military's role.

I'm not totally against the idea at all just how it's been implemented. Make the case, pass the bills, execute a bipartisan plan approved by everyone.

Nope. I'm not military. But what I read is their role is not to police citizens.

The National Guard serves two primary roles: a state militia under the command of governors for natural disaster response and a federal combat reserve of the Army and Air Force for wartime missions and overseas deployments. Members maintain civilian jobs while training part-time, bringing unique skills to both domestic and overseas operations, and are called to support active-duty forces.

My "pass the bills" comment is that if we decide we want to use our federal military to police our citizens then pass the laws to do it.
