The lesson here is that whenever you hear a politician say something like we only want to tax for the rich, it is a lie. In 1913 the income tax was only for the super wealthy. Public opinion was manipulated by tapping into people’s envy of successful Americans like JP Morgan & John D Rockefeller. Once the income tax was established, it didn’t take much more effort to apply it to everyone else.
