They had open elections with a secular, progressive government, including elected women who spoke and were respected members of Parliament. The government, among other things, wanted to nationalize its oil resources, taking them back from foreign powers. Because of potential disruption of oil supplies, the CIA orchestrated the overthrow of Iran's democratic government and replaced that government with a brutal dictator, who was hated so much that he was overthrown by the revolutionaries who control and oppress Iran today. This short summary leaves out a lot of interesting plot twists! It's a sad tale, but fascinating and, more importantly, cautionary.
